Pumping Trap
PPT-A

Description:
Pumping Trap is compact condensate recovery system
specifically designed to remove condensate from steam heat
exchanger & process equipment under all operating conditions
(stall condition),even under vacuum. Pumping trap has an inbuilt
receiver to store condensate. The pump and trap mechanism is
incorporated within the same body envelope this ensures
automatic switch over from trap mode to pump mode and vice a
versa.
Sizes & Pipe Connections:

Salient Feature of PUMPING TRAP

PUMPING TRAP will ensure process plant or equipment remains totally drained of
condensate under all operating condition (stall condition),even under vacuum. This
optimizes thermal efficiency of heat exchanger, ensures quieter equipment operation,
avoids tube failure of heat exchanger & reduces maintenance cost.
PUMPING TRAP forms closed loop system, there is no escape of steam to the plant
room & no energy loss from even flash steam, in fact steam for motive supply is
returned back system.
Self contained Compact unit.
High capacity in one single package.
Requires no electrical energy. Suitable for hazardous environment.

Inlet Reservoir Piping

When draining a single piece of equipment and receiver is not
supplied ahead of pump, sufficient piping as given in the table
below and use 305 mm minimum filling head. This will prevent
any flooding of equipment while pump is discharging. Sufficient
reservoir volume is needed above the filling head level to
accept the condensate reaching the pump during the discharge
stroke. The receiver can be a length of pipe of large diameter or
a tank.

Nominal capacities
For full capacity details for a specific application consult Spirax Sarco.
To accurately size the pump trap, the following data is required.
1. Installation head available, from the base of the pump trap to the
centre line of the heat exchanger / process condensate outlet (m).
If the outlet is mounted vertically, then this should be from the
base of the pump to the face of the outlet.
2. Motive steam pressure available to power the pump trap (bar g).
3. Total back pressure in the condensate return system (bar g).
See note below.
4. Heat exchanger full load operating pressure (bar g).
5. Heat exchanger maximum steam load (kg /h).
6. Minimum temperature of secondary fluid. (C).
7. Maximum controlled temperature of secondary fluid (C).

Max. pumping capacity 1 100 kg/h

Note:
Total lift or back pressure BP (static head plus pressure head in the
return system) must be below the motive fluid inlet pressure to allow
pump capacity to be achieved.

Recommended installation head (from base of pump) 0.3 m

BP (back pressure) = (H x 0.0981) + (P) + (Pf)

Height (H) in metres x 0.0981 plus pressure (P) bar g in the return
line, plus downstream piping friction pressure drop (Pf) in bar.
(Pf can be ignored if the downstream pipework is less than 100 metres
to a non-flooded condensate return and has been sized to take into
account the effect of flash steam at the heat exchanger's full load
operating conditions.)

Flash Vessel
Size 6

Description :
Condensate at higher pressure will generate flash steam if it is
allowed to flow from high pressure to low pressure. The flash
steam can be recovered and gainfully used in the process
requiring low pressure steam. This is possible by use of
Spirax Flash Vessel.

7.2.1

How to Size :

Example 2 : (dotted lines)

Use the chart below to select the appropriate size flash vessel.
It is necessary to know the pressure on the steam traps or
boiler pressure in the case of blowdown heat recovery, the
flash steam pressure (desired or existing) and the condensate
or blowdown flowrate.

A plant operating on steam at 11 barg condenses 4,000 kg/h of

steam Flash is to be recovered at o.5 barg.
1. From pressure on steam traps move horizontally to flash
steam pressure - A1
2. Drop vertically to condensate flowrate in kg/h -B1
3. Follow curve to right hand scale and across to same flash
pressure - C1
4. Move upwards to flash vessel size. Select flash vessel - in
this case an FV12 is required.

Example 1 : (solid lines)

A boiler plant operating at 12 barg has a TDS control
blowdown flowrate of 2,500 kg/h (3 boilers at 833 kg/h each).
The flash steam from the blowdown is to be added to the low
pressure steam system operating at 1 barg.
1. From boiler pressure move horizontally to flash steam
pressure - A
2. Drop vertically to blowdown flowrate in kg/h -B
3. Follow curve to right-hand scale and across to same flash
pressure - C
4. Move upwards to flash vessel size. Select flash vessel - in
this case an FV8 is required.
