Description of strategy: What is it? Who is it for? As the students read through an assigned text, they stop, think, and react to the test. The students use a sticky note to pause and jot down questions, connections, and or reactions they have to whatever they are reading. Students are then allowed to use their sticky notes in the class discussion. After the students are finished with the assignment, they can leave the notes in their books for future reference. Benefits of implementation: Why use it? This a great tool to prevent falling asleep while reading. We have all had those moments of reading for fifteen minutes and we are not able to recall what we just read. This strategy allows the reader to track and return to important spots in the reading. Steps of implementation: How does the strategy work in practice? 1. Teacher model the strategy with a short piece of reading so the students can see what kind of responses and information they should be looking for while reading. 2. Let the students try with a fresh piece of content area-text. After they are finished, they can share with a partner their findings and responses. 3. Call on several different groups to get a variety of answers from the students. 4. After class discussion, have students write the page number on sticky note of their findings so that I can track their notes. Differentiation: How is the strategy modified to meet the needs of individual and exceptional learners? Depending on the severity of the student, I could have them only do pictures of the codes we have come up with as a class. For an extension to the lesson, the honor class could make a summary based on their sticky notes that they made note of. Implications for Practitioners, Disclaimers, & Cautions This strategy can be used for all subjects. The tough part of this is having enough sticky notes for each class and each student. They are not cheap! References and Related Resources Daniels, Harvey, and Nancy Steineke. 2011. Texts and Lessons for Content- Area Reading. Portsmouth, NH: Heinemann.
