Description

1.1

General
The analog Repeater Compass, Type 133 -- 560, shows the heading determined by the gyro
compass in relation to GEOGRAPHICAL NORTH. The course is indicated by a 360 and a
10 card. It receives the heading signal in absolute and clear values from the gyro compass,
via a serial interface (RM Course BUS* or NMEA 0183).

Front panel
An anti--reflective screen covers the cards on the front panel of the Repeater Compass. The
lubber line is inside the plate. LEDs illuminate the lubber line and the cards in an area of
55. In the lower area of the front plate on the right side (refer to Fig. 2) a LED lights up in
three colours. Below the LED there are two multiple--function keys. On the left side there is
a digital display for the indication of the heading and error messages.

Stepping motor assembly

(Refer to Fig. 3).
The two cards are driven by a stepping motor each. The shaft of the stepping motor for the
10 card is arranged centrically in the shaft of the stepping motor for the 360 card. The
cards are directly mounted on the shafts of the stepping motors. The speed of the two stepping motors are in the ratio of 1:36. The 10 card is equipped with a graduation of 1/10 and
the 360 card with a graduation of 5. Both cards are translucent and lit up around the
lubber line by LEDs.

1.3

Principle of operation
The Repeater Compass receives the heading information from the gyro compass or from
the magnetic compass by means of serial transmission with absolute and clear values.
The serial transmission is realized via the RS 422 HEADING SERIAL* interface.
If it is intended to indicate data via a NMEA RS 422 or RS 232 interface, the Repeater Compass recognizes this type of interface and changes automatically over to gyro / magnetic
compass operation. Selecting the message type via a configuration is not necessary.
The serial course information is converted into steps on the steering repeater PCB for the
stepping motor in a ratio of 1:36 and is shown by the 360 and the 10 card.

Operating of the Repeater Compass Type 133 -- 560

2.1

Indications

2.1.1

Analog heading indication

The serial course information is converted into steps on the steering repeater PCB for the
stepping motor in the ratio of 1 : 36. It is indicated by the 360 and the 10 card.

2.1.2

Digital heading display

In addition to the analog heading indication by the cards, the Repeater Compass is also
equipped with a digital heading display on the left side of the front panel. This heading display cannot be desynchronized (refer to Fig. 2). The display alternates between the current
heading and the current heading sensor (G_AL, G_M_, G_--_, M_--_).

2.1.3

Status-- and alarm indications

The digital display also reports any possible error or alarm by means of a preset display
code (refer to section 4.2.2). If the Repeater Compass is used as a steering compass the
optical alarm is supported by a buzzer.
A LED on the right side of the front panel reads the status or alarm of the Repeater Compass and of the message:

Switching on the Repeater Compass

When the supply voltage is switched on, the Repeater Compass is put into operation. After
switching on the Repeater Compass an automatical synchronisation follows.
The current heading is shown by the analog and digital indications.
The digital display alternates between the current heading indication and the current type of
the heading sensor every 30 seconds. The heading sensor is indicated by a flashing display
for approx. 5 seconds.

Indication of the Repeater Compass after putting into operation

During the heating stage of the supplied gyro compass (up to approx. 0,5 h after putting the
compass into operation) there is no indication of the heading at the Repeater Compass.
After the heating stage has ended, the settling phase of the gyro compass starts.
During this settling phase the indicated heading of the Repeater Compass and of the gyro
compass is active. But only when the settling phase has ended (after approx. 3 h) the
heading indication can be used for navigation.

Correction of the analog indications (cards)

The correction of the analog indications is required, if:
-- The value of the cards does not correspond to the value on the digital display.
-- The adjustments of the manufacturer are lost.
-- This is only caused by a step fault of the stepping motor and not by an interruption of the
heading transmission or an interruption of the power supply.

General

WARNING!
Before establishing the cable connection the supply
voltage must be switched off. Ensure that the supply
voltage cannot be switched on during installation.
CAUTION!
Do not open the Repeater Compass when mounting it
or during the normal operation.

3.1.1

Mounting of the Repeater Compass

The series of repeaters type 133--560 NG... are assembled in different enclosures for:
-- Desk--flush mounting.
-- Bulkhead mounting.
-- Wall mounting.
For mounting the Repeater Compass pay attention to the following:
-- The cards, the operating and indicating elements should be well accessible.
-- Protect the cards against solar radiation.
-- Ensure the type of enclosure.
-- The Repeater Compass should not be installed in oil--containing ambient air.
-- For dimensions and drilling see dimensional drawings in the annex.
-- Ensure enough mounting space for the cable entry.
-- The Repeater Compass should be mounted seaworthy.

3.3.3

Adjustments of the course bus parameter

The parameter 1 to 6 in the table in section 3.3.2 configure the course bus operation.
With the parameter in 7 to 14 the current types of NMEA messages are selected.
The adjustments of the parameter 7 to 14 do not influence the Repeater Compass in course
bus operation.

3.3.4

Adjustments of the NMEA messages

The parameter 7 to 14 in section 3.3.2 select the NMEA messages that are transmitted by
the heading sensor.
Define all NMEA messages that are used by the heading sensor.
The definition of more than one message is permitted.
The adjustments of the NMEA parameter 7 to 14 van be combined with several adjustments
of the parameter 1 to 6. But only a few adjustments are permitted.
CAUTION!
Switch off the power supply of the Repeater Compass
after finishing the configuration and restart it.
During the restart the Repeater Compass checks the
validity of the configuration.

The valid combinations between the adjustment of the NMEA messages and the course bus
are described in the table below.
