The Intern (Reaction Paper)

The Intern is a 2015 American Comedy Film co-product, written and directed by
Nancy Meyers. The film stars Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway in the two leading
roles. The film was released on September 25 2015 by Warmer Bros.
The movie The Intern begins with Senior Citezen Ben, shoots a video resume for
an intern job he wants. Hes responding to a flyer asking for senior citezens to apply
for an internship bia video, stating why they should be hired. He say hes a 70 years
old widower living a vomfortable life but feels he need to ne more productive. He
gets a call for an interview.
The characters in the movie are all highly motivared individuals and mostly
manage to dodge stereotypes. The writer/director Nancy Meyers shorthly avoids the
beaten path in which characters exist only to go nowhere.
Ben takes care to dress impeccably for his firstbday ay work. Jason shows him and
three other interns (2 senior citizens, and a young man) while Davis sets up his
table with various gadgets, Ben table has basic stationary and a simple calculator
and watch. That scene, shows the viewers how simple life before. In the same
scene, Ben is informed by Jules assistant Necky that he has a meeting with her at
exactly 3:55 pm and he should be prompt because theres another meeting at 4:00
pm. Becky also tells jim to talk fast and blink a lot because her boss is disturbed by
people who do not. In the meeting Jules informs him that she will not have much for
him to do. However she will email him if something comes up. He does not hear
from her for a gew days. Nonetheless he makes himself produvtive, getting to know
the ropes around the place and learning how to deal with the technology. He helps
whomever he can and is refered of Mr.Congeniality by Cameron.
In addition, he also gives old schoolsensible advice to the youngsters when they
need it, such as telling Jason to talk properly to Becky for cheating on her since his
evasive text messages did not get any response. Ben starts to be noticed more and
more around the office especially after he is lauded by having a bell rung for him for
clearing out a desk that was the office dumping spot and routinely got on Jules
nerve.
By watching the whole first half of the film, I think that the author/director is trying
to say or show that despote of generational gaps in the work force, the leading
cause of strife centers on fears of finding ones place and beinh properly understood.
Everyone warms to Ben, and even the characters with small roles grow through him
in one way or another. In fact, if anything the balance between Ben and Jules favors
the latters personal problems over the more engaging workplace setting.
At home, we see Jules daughter Paihe and husband Matt who is a stay at home dad.
One day, while Jules is qorking late and Ben is working on his computer Julea brings
over her pizza to talk and eat with him. They bond and she helps him set up his FB

account and add friends. Finding out more about him in the process. Ben lists his
favorite qoutes as Youre never wrong for doing the right thing and I assume that
simple philosophy seems to have worked out pretty good for him so far. Ben begins
to give insightful opinions and shows that he has useful ecperience. Jules gives him
more and more responsibility surprising Cameron.
On the other hand, Ben saw Matt having an affair. He did not say it to Jules. But the
truth is, Jules already know about this. Ben comforts her and tells her she should
only hire the CEO if she wants tonot for anyone else and she ahould be able tp have
a both great career and a good marriage.
Back at home, Jules informsMatt about her decision and tells him she thinks it will
be great for us. But she is clearly unhappy with her decision.
The CEO she met in San Francisco sent her some flowers. Just then, Matt walks in
saying she should not hire the CEO for him. She needs to do what is rightfor her.
She informs him that she is aware of his affair as he is about to admit to it and asks
if it is over. They recommit to each other and promise to do better. So Jules change
her mind then they kiss. She goes after Ben to tell him thay sh3 changed her mind
she find Ben in a thai chi group. She joins him, finally letting herself relax.
Its not the funniest film Nancy Meyers was written and directed, nor does showcase
her most engaging character work, and visuals but its definetly the timeliest with its
ageist and feminist themes. Jules is a great female character with a complete arc
that wholly satisfies. Its a pleasant cinematic experience that expresses the
difficulty of understanding who you are and what youre capable of in an
Information Age that never seems to know what it wants.
