Facilitation Technique Category: Values Clarification

Activity Title: 4 Corners
Source: Advocates for Youth. Retrieved 2016, from
http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/publications/241-lessons
Equipment: Signs and a room with corners
Activity Description: The purpose of this activity is to let the participants express their values
and discuss the different qualities. First, set up four corners of the room with signs that read
Agree, Disagree, Unsure, and Pass. The therapist will read several value statements and
instruct the participants to 1) Think carefully about how they feel pertaining to the value
statements, 3) Move to whichever sign in the corner that describes how they feel about the that
particular value statement, 4) Volunteer to describe how they feel about each statement.
Therapist must let participants know they have the right to pass if they rather not take a stand on
a particular statement, but are encouraged to try and participate. Session is concluded with
discussions regarding what they learned about themselves and others, if at any time they feel
unable to stand up for a value they believed in, and if there were times where they felt
uncomfortable.
Leadership Considerations: CTRS functions as the instructor in this activity. To ensure a safe
session therapist must discuss safety rules during activity. All instructions must be given prior to
the session as well as discussing respect towards others. Therapist must emphasize that there is
not right or wrong answers, only opinions. Knowing value clarifications is necessary and
applying appropriate ones for all types of disabilities. Therapist must encourage participant to
think before choosing a corner, but can change their stand on any value at any time.
Adaptations:
Participants with Substance Abuse: Participants with an overindulgence of an addictive
substance, as in alcohol or drugs, suffers from substance abuse (Substance abuse, 2016). To
ensure a successful session on value clarifications, therapist should compose statements relating
to those with substance abuse. The statements should include terms of behavior change for the
individual. For example, having a close family, being emotionally stable, and/or being
competent (Sichel, n.d.).
Participants with Visual Impairment: To ensure those participants with visual impairments
ability to participate in this activity there should be guides available for assistance (Being a
sighted guide - American foundation for the blind, n.d.). Depending on the severity of the
individuals impairment, there could be bright markers that differentiate each corner. Prior to the
activity the therapist and participant could perform a walk through of each corner
(Accommodations and modifications at a glance: Educational accommodations for students
who are blind or visually impaired - American foundation for the blind, n.d.). Make sure if there
is furniture in the room it is arranged to make adequate space for a safe and comfortable
environment.
