Searching for an international market

for plant stanol ester Benecol

highest expectations on placed on

cholesterol lowering Benecol. Foreseen to
conquer world-wide markets rapidly but the
particularities of consumer food markets,
like local regulations and approvals as well as
consumer tastes, created obstacles
Innovation is based on a patented plant
stanol ester, which is produced from plant
sterols gained from wood oil, soy or turnip
rape. Plant sterols are a side product of, for
instance, pine processing.
Effect on decreasing cholesterol, by
preventing it from being absorbed from the
alimentary canal to organs, known since the
1950s, indicated in over 60 clinical tests.

A spin-off from university research Yosa

Yosa is a fibre-rich snack, made of wholegrain oats.

Yosa, a yoghurt-like snack, flavoured with various
fruits and it contains plenty of health-enhancing
lactic acid and bifido-bacteria.
Based on beta-glucan (soluble fibre found in oats),
been shown to improve digestion, allow a
prolonged energy supply and provide an extended
sensation of fullness. Also lower cholesterol and
balances blood sugar
Also contains a unique mix of probiotic bacteria
such as Bifidobacterium lactis BB-12TM,
Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5TM and Lactobacillus
Rhamnosus 705.
Ideal for vegans, it is fat free and has a significantly
lower energy content than traditional yoghurts.
Yosa emerges from the joint efforts of the research
communi ty to find industrial applications for betaglucan enriched oat bran.
Dev. Started early 90s, 94 license idea, now
turnover 2.7 million euros.

GIM Ltd. History

The story of GIM dates back to the founding of

Automation and Systems technology laboratory
at Helsinki University of Technology mid 80's.
The group has been involved in numerous
mobile robotic projects, e.g., the ones leading
to automated mining machines and walking
harvesters.

GIM Ltd. History

In 2008-2013 awarded the distinction and grant

of Center of Excellence.
4-6 mil Euros per year for 6 years, around 40

Visit to Clients: Looking for problems to solve

Case 1: Project frost control
Due to climatic anomalies, presumably caused by climate
change, it has confirmed the presence of frost in unusual
times and very different nature than currently known. In
this context, the client needs a predictive system linked
to turbines or other device to minimize the effect of frost.

Case 2: bottling automation project
Currently the bottling of wine is made in a
semi-manual, using an overstaffed. The
customer wants to automate the most of
this phase of wine production.

Case 3: Optimization of water consumption
in irrigation.
The customer wants to optimize the use of water
in irrigation by controlling moisture in the ground.

seeks
to
replace
agrochemicals
by
mechanical pruning.

Case 5: Disease/Pest Control Project.
There is currently a lot of knowledge about
identification, effects and conditions for the
development of different diseases, but the
client does not have a predictive program
emergence of these conditions. The latter
implies that incurred great expense in
disease prevention, to the ignorance of the
actual occurrence of unfavorable conditions.

Notes on cases 4 and 5 Costs
- Weeding: 115-135 x ha annual (2 laps are
cutting weeds with machinery and 1 run chemical
herbicide ).
- Preventive Disease Control (powdery mildew Botrytis). 225-270 x ha annual.
- Bottling and packaging: about 0.15 per bottle

Other notes:
- The selling price of 1 kilo of grapes is $ 100 (CLP),
while the cost of harvesting is $ 50 (CLP) per kilo.
This clearly reflects the high cost of labor.
- The rainfall deficit reached 40% in the area where
the cooperative is located, which involves
significant challenges for optimizing water
consumption.

Conclusions

There is interest from the client to adopt latest technology that

produces the same service but a lower cost
The client is not willing (can not), pay the development cost (not even
partially?).
Collaboration among all the stakeholders is essential for successful
innovation in this case
There is qualified human capital to co-develop different
automation/robotic solutions for the Agro-industry.
There is qualified human capital to operate new service companies
and to provide technical support to service company
Financing support/opportunities for developing this solutions is still a
question.
