AWS President David L. McQuaid
will discuss construction of the new
San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge.
Dave holds a degree in Civil Engineering and is a Licensed Professional Engineer in multiple states. He
has 45 years experience and has
worked 31 years as the Welding Engineer for American Bridge; who
was the constructor of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and the new Alfred
Zampa Memorial (Carquinez) Bridge

in Vallejo. He currently is the President of his own company DL

McQuaid & Associates. Dave has
also served for the past
30 years as a member of
AWS D1 Main Committee and 20 Years as the
Chairman of the D1.5
Bridge Welding Code
Committee.
Daves presentation will
cover design, fabrication,
field erection & welding
of the Bay Bridge, and its
signature Self Anchored
Suspension (SAS) span.
The bridge contains 50,000 metric
tons of structural steel, 35,000 tons of
Orthotropic Deck Steel and 15,000
tons of tower steel. There was also
24,000 tons of Falsework erected to
support the orthotropic deck until the
suspension cables were erected. This
bridge is unique in that it does not
have large concrete cable anchors at
each end similar to other suspension
bridges. Daves presentation will
highlight several of the complex
welding and fabrication challenges
encountered during construction.
The Self Anchorage Suspension
Bridge is the signature bridge that
connects Oakland California to San
Francisco California. Contract was
awarded in May 2006 and the bridge
was Open to Traffic in August 2013.
The Customer was the State of California, Department of Transportation

Toll Bridge Oversight Committee,

the Contractor was American Bridge/
Fluor Enterprises Inc., A Joint Venture and the Engineer of
Record was TY Lin/
Moffatt & Nichol Engineers Joint Venture.
This bridge spans 1994
feet (625 meters)
50,000 metric tons of
Structural Steel, 35,000
metric tons of Orthotropic Deck Steel and
15,000 metric tons of
tower. The tower is 500
feet (157 meters) tall.
There was 24,000 metric tons of
Falsework to support the orthotropic
deck until the cable was erected.
There are 4,000 metric tons of wire
cable that anchors at each end of the
bridge deck. This bridge is unique in
that it does not have large concrete
cable anchors at each end of the
bridge like typical suspension bridges
have. This bridge has an expected
design life of 150 years.
All welding and fabrication was done
in conformance with the AWS D1.5
Bridge Welding Code and the AISC
Code of Standard Practice. The
welding and fabrication was challenging and unique as will be shown
in this presentation.
