What do civil engineers at Arup do?

drinking water, and sanitary sewer systems; and power and communication
delivery facilities is required on almost every design Arup undertakes.
Our civil engineers thrive on the excitement and design challenges inherent
in Arups delivery of an unmatched list of sustainable, iconic and worldchanging projects. These range from the basic needs of an impoverished
village, to the next important civic building, to the newest high-speed rail
line, to the planning and design of new cities that are carbon-neutral.

In a work environment that places creativity and collaboration at the fore,

our civil engineers interact, imagine, and create with world-renowned
architects, forward-thinkingurban planners, sophisticated transit agencies,
private owners with global portfolios, and governments working to define
their sustainability agendas and design their holdings for long-term
success. Find out more and apply...

Meet Maxime

Meet Maxime, a civil engineer at Arup.

I first learned of Arup while attending Mcgill University. At the time, Arup
had been searching for graduated civil engineers that would be open to an
intensive internship. Seeing as the internship concerned a field of expertise
that highly interests me, infrastructure and bridge engineering, I was
thrilled to apply to such an internship regardless of the fact that I had a
diploma and could aspire to obtain a full time job.
I was always interested in working in major infrastructure projects that
involve bridge engineering. This is in fact one of the reason why I got into
Civil Engineering to start with. As my internship came to a conclusion,
Arup obtained a major infrastructure project in the Montreal area, one that
is highly mediatized and that involves the replacement of a 3.5 km bridge.
The replacement of this bridge is something that I always dreamed I could
be a part of when I started studying Civil Engineering. When Arup offered
to continue our partnership by employing me as a full-time graduate
structural engineer, I could not refuse such an honor and the chance to work
on a landmark structure that has always been in my goals and aspiration.
Whilst interning at Arup, I was involved in providing independent engineer
services to a client performing a major infrastructure replacement in the
Montreal area. More specifically, the client sought from Arup a second
opinion regarding the demolition of a complex high-rise interchange that
crosses vital railway tracks, a waterway, municipal buildings and
residential areas in a highly urbanized area as well as a second opinion
regarding the design and concept of two landmark bridges.
Interning at Arup allowed me to form a first-hand opinion and impression
of the quality of work that Arup performs and the way the company works

internally. I was immediately impressed by the way Arup pools its

internationally renowned professionals in projects around the world in
order to provide clients with expert advices and quality services. I
immediately became exposed to professionals that have a wealth of
technical expertise and can further improve my professional development.
I am currently involved in the structural design of a railway maintenance
facility that will allow a transit organization to perform maintenance,
reparations and inspection on its train fleet. I continue to be involved in
providing feedback and expertise in the major bridge replacement project
and will in the near future get involved once again on the interchange
replacement project. My day to day responsibilities vary tremendously.
Working in a small satellite offices means that the few resources within the
office have to diversify and collectively lend their shoulder to the wheel. I
am mostly responsible for providing structural engineer design and analysis
services, but I am often asked to prepare technical presentations, attend
meetings, prepare structural drawings, perform technical memorandums
and review documents.
Since joining Arup I have learned that a project well done, that will
improve the community and environment is something that should be
strived for. It is something that you can be proud of and will forever remain
an accomplishment. The Arup motto, To shape a better world is quite
literally the business aim and goal.
As Arup is a multi-national firm that allows and encourages the relocation
of its resources amongst its various offices around the world, it is hard to
predict what path my career will follow. One thing is certain, the
opportunities available are exciting, promising and rewarding. This
business mentality is something unique to Arup that separates it from the
pack.

What we offer
Arup provides our target of "reasonable prosperity for its members"
through regular benchmarking of total benefits and salary packages against
the industry. Furthermore, in the alignment with our "humane organization"
values, Arup ensures that its normal overhead includes:

An excellent benefits package

Support for staff involvement in the industry
Extensive training programs

Driven by our values

Our values-driven human resource policies are a luxury granted to us by

our founder,Ove Arup, who did a remarkable thing during the 1970s: he
and his partners gave away the firm to the employees! After he wrote
his Key Speech in 1970, Ove knew that future leaders may be tempted to
abandon such lofty ideals under severe market pressures.
In order to protect the integrity of his vision, Ove and his partners
collectively transferred their ownership rights of the firm to a pair of
charitable trusts whose only beneficiaries would be employees past and
present and their descendants. This language made the firm impossible to
buy and extraordinarily difficult to dissolve. Through this generous act,
these forward-thinking leaders ensured that all future generations of Arup
staff could operate in accordance with the Key Speechs aims without fear
of a hostile takeover. Read more about our values and history.

Own your career at Arup

Since we are owned by charitable trusts whose beneficiaries are Arup
employees, we are the only stakeholders. Job stability is linked to our
collective success in the market place. We are responsible to each other and
for each others livelihoods. With the company structure described above,

Reserves
Profit Share distributed to the employees
Investment in Arup: the rest of the funds are made
available to support the development of new offices, new
businesses, and to finance research projects proposed by
staff members

Internships
Each year, Arup seeks out students from across the world for our acclaimed
summer internship program. We are interested in students from rigorous
academic programs who are ready to jump into the professional world and
directly impact Arups work.

challenge themselves and the status quo. Our interns learn quickly, are
natural problem solvers and thrive on innovation.
