To minimise the risks associated with fire.
To minimise the health and safety risks to people who are exposed to electricity in the course of our business.

Local management who are responsible for fire safety at their location.

What do I
need to
know?

Fire can cause death, injury, explosion and damage to equipment, buildings and the environment.

Standard

Appoint responsible person


Local management MUST seek specialist advice on fire safety and appoint a competent responsible person who is in charge of fire
safety at the location.

Fire safety requires vigilance, protective systems, inspections and fire response plans.

Local management should ensure fire safety responsibilities are assigned at shared sites, and that all buildings meet international
standards of fire risk management.
The responsible person should integrate fire considerations into the design of new buildings or modifications to existing buildings where
possible, such as the use of non-combustible materials.

The responsible person MUST ensure the following elements of a fire safety programme are in place.

Assess fire risks


The responsible person carries out a fire risk assessment in order to:

identify the risk of fire


identify everyone at risk paying special attention to people with disabilities or special needs
determine how to remove or reduce the risks control ignition sources and minimise the quantities of flammable and combustible
materials
identify appropriate fire precautions

Record results of fire risk assessment on Form xxxx


Fire safety training to employees, visitors and contractors
Provide induction on fire safety to employees, visitors and contractors.
The induction should include:

information on site fire risks


information on preventive controls
location and use of fire-fighting equipment
how to raise the fire alarm and evacuation procedure
ensuring everyone understands their responsibility to keep the workplace safe from fire and not put themselves or anyone else in
danger

Regular refresher training should be provided to employees.


Fire drills should be held at least once a year and records kept.
Fire detection, alarm and protection systems
Provide automatic fire detection and alarm systems with manual operation points throughout the site.
Where indicated by fire risk assessment, automatic fixed fire protection systems such as sprinklers should be installed.
Emergency escape routes
Provide clearly sign-posted and illuminated means of escape from all areas, appropriate to the risks and number of people
Audit fire prevention, evacuation and control systems
Regular tests on fire prevention, firefighting, alarms and warning systems MUST to be carried out by a competent person.
Check that emergency routes and exits are kept clear, fire doors emergency lighting are working as they should.
Fire response plan
Establish communication with local emergency services and provide them with relevant information about dangerous substances on site.
Ensure all personnel understand actions to take on discovery of a fire or hearing the fire alarm.
