Mongolia`s energy consumption

Mongolia is land locked
country that is bordering with
China and Russia. Since it was
ruled by communist system, it's
energy consumption was highly
dependent on Russia before 1990.
Now it is still dependent on the
Russian energy and about 13% of
the total energy is imported from
mainly Russia. Countrys total
energy production consists of
80% generated from coal-fired
power plants, 4% is produced by
diesel generators and 3% by
renewable energy sources that
are mainly hydropower. According
to recent study in 2010, the total
required capacity in Mongolia is
740MW.
Our
power
system
accounts for 3% of GDP and
supplies 80% of population with
electricity.
Industrial
and
Construction sector consumes the
62%
of
the
total
energy
consumption and housing and
communal
service
consumes
24%; moreover, transportation and communication sectors consumes
24% and remaining is consumed by other sectors. Since Mongolias
climate is cold and its mean temperature -14.5/15.4, heating is one of
the main energy consumptions. In the Ulaanbaatar city that is the
capital of the Mongolia, there are three main coal fired power plants for
production of the energy and heating supply. All heated apartment
building and commercial buildings are headed by using those major
power plants during winter season. Moreover, it can be one of the
major sources for air pollution of the city. For the electricity supply,
there are three unconnected energy systems; those are central,
western and eastern system. For recent years, southern part of
Mongolia lucks energy production due to recent development of mining
activities in this area. Moreover, concerning the Western and Central
systems, our operators are not able to balance the demand and supply
in the grid adequately. The missing balance load has to be

compensated by additional supplies from Russian high price energy

import.

Possible measure for climate change:

In my opinion, all energy source should be changed to green
energy to reduce global warming. What I mean for green energy is
energy that is renewable such as solar, wind and hydraulic etc. For
example, in Ulaanbaatar city that is capital of Mongolia, all heating and
electricity are produced by using coal fired power plants; so that, ash
from those plants pollute the city air and when it reaches from air to
ground, it also pollutes the
soil. In addition to that, coal
mining also destroys the
environment and eco-system.
The
coal
mine
named
Nalaih is located near the
Ulaanbaatar city and it is one
of the main sources for coal
consumption of the city
during winter season. In order
to
extract
coal
from
underground, all grass land
near this mine is completely
destroyed and used for mining purpose. Moreover, it effects not only
land but also rivers near to the mine negatively. There are two rivers

those are effected negatively due to usage of their water to wash the
mined coal.
In this modern society, energy consumption is increasing day by
day; therefore, fossil fual mining and consumption should be limited or
eliminated completely in order to decrease negative effect to the
nature, so that climate change can be stabilized near future.
