ISO 14000 Series Standard

ISO 14000 is a series of environmental management
standards developed and published by the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) for organisations.
The ISO 14000 family of standards provides practical tools
for companies and organizations of all kinds looking to
manage their environmental responsibilities.
The ISO 14000 standards are not designed to aid the
enforcement of environmental laws and do not regulate
the environmental activities of organizations. Adherence
to these standards is voluntary.

The ISO 14000 family is

designed to be implemented
according to the same PlanDo-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle

standards.
The ISO 14001 standard is the
most important standard
within the ISO 14000 series.

To result in better environmental management and applicable in all

countries;
To encompass environmental management systems and the
environmental aspects of products;
To develop a common language platform for environmental issues, so that
businesses, prospective customers, and governments are certain that all
organizational level environmental concerns have been addressed;
To promote the broader interests of the public as well as users of these
standards;
To be cost-effective, non-prescriptive and flexible so they are able to meet
the differing needs of organizations of any type or size, worldwide;
As part of their flexibility, to be suitable for internal and/or external
verification;
To be scientifically based; and
To be practical, useful and usable.

Applicability of ISO 14000

The whole ISO 14000 family of standards provides
management tools for organizations to manage their
environmental
aspects
and
assess
their
environmental performance.

these tools can provide significant tangible economic

benefits, including the following:a) Reduced raw material/resource use
b) Reduced energy consumption
c) Improved process efficiency
d) Reduced waste generation and disposal costs
e) Utilization of recoverable resources

Rationale for ISO 14000

Registration
a) Is a way of signalling to your buyers, customers, suppliers
and other stakeholders that you have implemented the
standard properly

b) provide assurance to company management and employees

as well as external stakeholders that environmental impact is
being measured and improved
c)

Encourage better environmental performance of suppliers by

integrating them into the organizations business systems

d) Demonstrate compliance with current and future statutory

and regulatory requirements
