Before: APK of what a map is. Why might people use a

map? What is on a map?

Before: Show some student maps and talk through them.

What does a map show? Why do people use maps? APK of
a globe. Show the globe and ask students if they know

upon the map as we move throughout the week).

During: Discuss how globes are used to show a map in 3D

and how globes could be used as another way to find
places people might want to visit. Discuss land, cities,
rivers, and roads on a globe. Compare/Contrast between
plain maps and a globe. Discuss where the U.S. and VA are
on a map and a globe.
After: Have students write about the similarities/differences
between maps and a globe.

TSWBT: identify and describe symbols

in isolation and on a map/globe

TSWBT: same as previous day

TSWBT:

Before: Review symbols on a map. Show

some pictures of things they might see
every day and have students think of
what their symbol might be on a map (a
bench at a park: simple on a map).
Show a map legend and discuss what it
is used for.

Before: Review concepts learned so

far; maps, globes, and symbols.
Discuss how when making maps,
people draw them as if they are up
high looking down at the paper.

Before: APK of symbols. What is a

symbol? Tell students that we are
going to learn about new and different
kinds of symbols today.
During: Show students symbols they
might see on a map. Have students try
and guess what the symbols
represent. Open up the Adventure
Island site and work through the
discussion of symbols.
After: Have students practice drawing
symbols they might see on a map.

After: Have students draw more symbols

and objects they might see on a map if
finished early.

happening (the places keep getting

bigger and bigger). Relate this to
making maps and globes.
After: Have students write two
more sentences about maps, the
globe, or symbols that we have
learned this week on the back of
their booklet.
