PROJECT ORIGINS

Registration
The Ashleigh Erin Foundation was formed in March 2001 and officially registered as a
section 21 company in June 2002. The company is a registered Non Profit Organisation
with the Department of Social Development. We are registered with the Gauteng
Department of Education as a Technical High School and with the Department of
Higher Education as an Independent Further Education and Training (FET) College,
accredited to conduct training in the Engineering sector. Our FET SkillsTraining
College holds a MERSETA accreditation for Fitting & Turning, Welding, Diesel
Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering training courses. In addition, we are
also accredited with the EW SETA for Electrical Engineering and the MICT SETA for
Information Technology. We conduct training through either the Learnership or the
Apprenticeship approaches and work closely with Industry to provide our learners with
on-the-job experiential training as part of the Learnership/Apprenticeship approaches.
Our primary focus is to skill and develop the unemployed youth and young adults
within our community. We do this by initially providing them with the foundational
engineering skills (Hand-and Power Tool Skills and Health and Safety Skills) that will
enable them to be fast tracked into an engineering career path, and then linking them
with Industry so that we can eventually present them to Industry as trade tested artisans
on completion of their training.

LOCATION

Ithemba Institute of Technology is located in Tladi, Soweto. This area is by all accounts
the poorest area within Soweto with so many households surviving only on grants and
pension payouts for the elderly. Research conducted in this area a few years ago
indicate that the average monthly income per household was under R3000 per month.
Many adults in this area are unemployed and youth and young adults invariably find
themselves unemployed and searching for work after completing grade 12. It is our
opinion that the unemployment in this area is escalated by learners who have managed
to secure training opportunities, but the training that they have been exposed to does not
match the needs of the economy. They therefore cannot secure gainful employment. Our
expressed concern is that skills development programmes should be based on the exact
needs of the countrys economy. When we train learners according the skills need of the
economy, their chances of securing sustainable employment opportunities increases
considerably. The cycle of unemloyment and poverty in this and other similar
communities can only be broken through the provision of industry relevant education
and skills development opportunities in line with the demands of an economy that cries
out for skilled people, especially in the engineering sector. Our organisations vision of
exposing our community to engineering skills training opportunities will eventually
create a pool of skilled people who have secured employment. Our view is that this is
the only way to improve the living conditions of the majority of the people living in
Tladi and surrounding areas.

ITHEMBA TRAINING EXPERIENCE

Ithemba Institute of Technology is a registered and accredited Independent FET college that has been
providing scarce skills technical and engineering training programmes since 2008. We are accredited
with both the Merseta as well as the EW SETA in terms of our engineering workshops. We are also in
an advanced stage of expanding our accreditation to the Construction and the MQA SETA in terms of
the engineering sector. We currently provide engineering skills programmes in the form of learnerships
and apprenticeships in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Fitting and Turning, Welding as well as
Diesel Mechanical Engineering.
Our experience in the field of successfully conducting and completing Leanership and Apprenticeship
training programmes in the field of Electrical engineering is vast, having in the past worked with
government organisations, industry and the various Sector Education Training Authorities. Our work
during this time has exposed us completely to the various stages of conducting a
Learnership/Apprecticeship training programme; which includes processes such as the selection of
learners, induction and orientation of learners, contracting and registration of learners onto our data
bases as well as with the SETAS, assessments and moderation, verification by the Setas and securing
experiential training opportunities for our learners. We have a close working relationship with a
number of Industry partners who help us with work placement orientation programmes for our
learners.
In recent years Ithemba has been fortunate to conduct Learnership/ Apprenticeship training courses in
partnership with various organisations and industry partners. In 2008 Ithemba commenced its
learnership training programme in partnership with companies such as City Power, Transnet and Atlas
Copco. During this period we successfully completed an NQF level 2 learnership training programme
for at least 40 learners, who in turn were placed with the Transnet, City Power and Atlas Copco. Many
of these learners were absorbed into apprenticeship training programmes by theese three organisations
immediately after completing the learnership programme with Ithemba. In 2010 Ithemba partnered
with Goba and Associates to conduct a learnership programme for at least 120 unemployed learners at
NQF level 2. Ithemba also managed to secure Industry experiential work placement opportunities for
all of these learners when the Department of Infrastructure and Development could not secure
workplcement opportunitiues for our learners. This project was succesfully concluded in 2011, with a
number of our learners securing permanent placement opportunities with Industry immediately after
this learnership training programme. Ithemba has also regularly trained for companies such as
Cummins S.A, ABB (Pty) Ltd, Scania SA as well as Assa Abloy since 2010. During this time, we
trained making use of both the Learnership and the apprenticeship approach, depending on the

The Ashleigh Erin Foundation

requirements of our Industry partners. At the beginning of 2012, Ithemba was again enagaged by the
Gauteng Provincial Government to conduct a learnership training programme for at least 250
unemployed learners. In terms of this agreement, Ithemba had to secure work placement opportunitues
for all of the 250 learners. Ithemba managed to successfully secure the required workplace
opportunities and the learners are currently engaged with the training.
References to this effect will be found on Pg22 of this document.
