Discussion Essay

What is love? A better question is, what does love mean to you? Love is defined in the
Webster Dictionary as a feeling of strong or constant affection towards a person. Although that is
true, love is so much more. To me, here is four types of love: Storge, Philia, Eros and Agape.
These four types of love are not just about having strong feelings toward a person, they all show
love in a different and unique way in ways the dictionary cannot define.
Storge love, to me is an empathy bond. This is the kind of love you have for family, to people
you are familiar with or those who share a close bond with you. Storge love is always there, it is
somewhat natural for human beings to feel Storge love. An example would be the bond between
and parent and their child. A mother cannot help but love their child, it is a piece of them and to
not love your child means that you are not human. The love you have for your family or those
you have grown up with are considered Storge.
The second love is Philia. This is the love between two friends. A strong bond, common
values, and strength in the relationship show that a friendship cannot be broken. The love
between two best friends is freely chosen, therefore it is much more special than Storge. A story
in the bible that represents Philia is the friendship between David and Jonathan. They had an
unconditional love for each other despite the problems they faced with Jonathans father, King
Saul.
The third is Eros which is the sense of loving someone or feeling that you are in love. When a
man falls for a woman and wants her and only her, that is Eros love. Although it can be put into

good terms but there is also a bad side to it where the man can want a woman sexually. But on
the good side it can mean that the man will stay faithful and love his significant other profoundly.
Eros love is specifically for married couples who have saved themselves for each other are
giving all of their love to one another.
The last and most important is Agape love. This love is reserved for the only person who can
love us regardless of what we do, and that is God. When Jesus died on the cross he showed
Agape love and still loved us unconditionally after what we did. A huge sacrifice is a way of
showing Agape Love Just like when God sent his only son.
To me love is so much more then feeling something for someone. There is so much more to
love then what we believe. With different kinds of love and different ways to show it, there is no
way that a definition can describe it in one sentence. To me love is four things, Storge, Philia,
Eros and Agape.
