Arguments/topics this source discusses: This article provides information on research that has been conducted in order to discover the effects domestic violence can have on children. It states that research has shown that domestic violence can have both behavioral and psychological effects on children. Both girls and boys, regardless of age, are more likely to have violent tendencies when raised in an abusive home. They are also more likely to be abused themselves. The article also provides details on how the research was conducted and what criteria they used in their investigation. Quotes: Children exposed to domestic violence tended to be more aggressive and to exhibit behavior problems in their schools and communities ranging from temper tantrums to fights. Both boys and girls from violent homes evidenced significantly lower levels of social competence, such as poorer problem-solving skills and lower levels of empathy. Between 45% and 70% of children exposed to domestic violence are also victims of physical abuse, and that as many as 40% of child victims of physical abuse are also exposed to domestic violence. Children in households with domestic violence were also found to be at higher risk for sexual abuse than were children in nonviolent households.
