Citation:
Walker, Lenore E. "Psychology and Domestic Violence Around the World." American
Psychology

54.1 (1999): 21-29. Web. 10 Oct. 2016.

Source Validation: I believe this is a valid source because it is written by Lenore E. Walker who
is the founder of the Domestic Violence Institute and has done extensive research, as well as
published, on this topic.

How I Found This Source: I found this source on Google Scholar.

Intended Audience: The intended audience for this source is people interested in the
psychology behind domestic violence.

Arguments/Topics This Source Discusses: This source discusses the stance psychologists
around the world have taken on domestic violence. The psychological community has not
focused on the human rights aspect of this issue but has instead focused on intervention and
prevention for the victims. This article describes the different policies that are in place
throughout the world in order to combat this issue. It also stresses that domestic violence is
difficult to combat when people are unsure as to what exactly is defined as domestic violence.
Often people do not consider verbal abuse or spousal sexual abuse as violence. This article is
also the first I read that briefly discusses the abuse of the elderly.

Quotes:
During these past 20 years, advocacy and intervention for battered women and their families
has been expanded to include changes in the legal and mental health systems to better
accommodate the complexities of domestic violence.

In England, Edwards has been training police departments to better understand gender-based
crimes including domestic violence.
Law enforcement in many countries still will not intervene in what is often called a domestic
quarrel, even though psychological research indicates that without such intervention, abusers are
unlikely to seek help to stop their battering behavior.
