Assignment #3: Experiential Learning Interview
My partner, Carmen, had many interests, but I noticed that most of them led back to a
certain theme: serving others. From our discussion, I got to learn about Carmen's academic plans
for the future, her interests inside and outside her major, and her eagerness to serve others
whether it be through legislative work or volunteer work. Carmen plans to double major in Law,
Societies, and Justice and Philosophy. These fields of study play well into her skill set and they
give her the opportunity to learn about human rights and the Constitution, which are topics she
feels most strongly about. After earning her degree, she plans to attend law school, work in
legislation, and help create laws that will better the lives of her constituents. Some of her favorite
courses in college so far involved learning about ethical issues, reasoning, and leadership
topics that will prepare her for a successful career in service and legislative work. Outside her
major, Carmen enjoys playing piano, singing, volunteering at her church, and working with
children. If she decides to take a study abroad opportunity, she hopes to visit Spain, Rome, or
Mexico because she is interested in the culture and history of these locations. At the end of the
discussion, I asked my partner what she was looking for in an experiential learning opportunity
and she said she hopes to have a lot to learn from it and she is open to finding new passions.
Overall, I learned that my partner has an admirable eagerness to help others as well as an open
mind when it comes to trying new things.
Here are three specific opportunities I found that I believe best fit my partner's interests:
1. Classics Rome: Classical Seminar In Rome (International Engagement)
This is a study abroad opportunity for spring quarter: March 27 June 2, 2017. Students get the
opportunity to study ancient Roman culture and civilization.
