Jesus Christ has come and will come again! This is exciting
news and our ultimate hope. Jesus coming is the eager
expectation and desire of His people and Church. This is
the theme of Advent, formed from a Latin word meaning
coming or arrival. Its the traditional celebration of the
first Advent of Jesus and the anxious awaiting of His second
Advent in glory. Join us as we celebrate this season by
remembering, rejoicing, and waiting.
Advent can be celebrated many ways and traditions have changed over
the years. Many people use an Advent calendar to count down the days
until Christmas. Some people use Advent books that lead to the birth
of Christ. However you decide to organize your Advent devotions, the
main focus should be the expectation of Jesus coming. This reminds
us of the hopeful yet anxious waiting Gods people experienced as they
longed for the promised Savior to come.
Especially for families, this time of year can be filled to the brim with
activities. Our world tends to put the focus on gifts, Santa Claus, and
decorating a Christmas tree. Make these Advent devotions a special
time set aside to remind your family of the true meaning of Christmas.
Before the calendar begins to overflow with obligations, set aside a few
minutes to consider what you want this season to be for your family.
Then make a plan so that a time intended to remember and celebrate
doesnt get swallowed up by lesser things.
We have provided a family portion called For the Family that will help
you create intentional time to talk about Jesus. There will also be crafts,
recipes, and family discussion questions scattered throughout. We hope
your family is able to focus on Gods promise being fulfilled through
Jesus birth this Christmas season!

Genesis 3:8-15
by stephanie paschall
Adam and Eve had sinned (ate the fruit when God told them not to) and
hid themselves thinking God would not find them. But thankfully and
graciously, God searched and found them. This is such a great picture
of who God is to us. When we sin and do wrong things, and even try
to hide God still seeks a relationship with us. That doesnt mean there
wont be consequences to our sin but God will always love us and will
one day get rid of sin once and for all.

Set up the expectations for your family Advent and talk to your kids
about its importance. This will be a daily thing. You can make a little
calendar or a paper chain to count down and read these devotions.
Although traditions, presents, and decorations are fun, Christmas is truly
about Jesus birth! You can also set up an Advent wreath in your home.
In fact, we really encourage you do to so (we will be lighting the candles
of the wreath every Sunday night at church as well). If you dont have a
wreath, just set aside 5 candles in a special place.
Discuss with your family: What is one hope you have for yourself, your
family, or your community as you begin the Advent season? How will you
make it a reality?
Pray for yourself and those around you, asking God to open your eyes
and heart to what He has for you this Advent season.

The story of Advent is not just a story that began when Gabriel made
his surprise visit to Mary. It didnt start when John the Baptist began
declaring the coming of the Word. The story of Advent began in Genesis.
From the very beginning, our Father began speaking His love over His
people, illustrating His goodness, forgiveness, and grace...preparing His
children for how He would deliver them over and over again and then,
once and for all.
In Genesis 4 we read about the first murder. A brother takes the life of
a brother. It breaks our hearts to read a story that reflects our own sin,
our own greed, our own jealousy. Cain sacrificed. But not as sacrificially
as his brother Abel. And instead of reflecting upon his own guilt and
heeding Gods wisdom to refute sin, Cain leads his brother into a field
and kills him. The first man dies at the hands of another. Abel, the one
who sacrificed mightily to God, sheds innocent blood and dies as a
result of his brothers sin.
12
once and for all. Jesus would become the innocent slain at the hands of
sinners, brothers, and children of God. But His blood was the ultimate
offering for forgiveness of sins. Read Romans 3:21-26 again and let your
thoughts linger on the word Propitiation. That word means the wiping
away of sin. But the definition goes even further than thatit implies
the satisfaction or appeasement of Gods wrath. This very moment,
take a minute alone with God and bless His name! Every sinevery
murder, every deed done from jealousy, hate, greed, every angry or even
murderous thoughtall of those are wiped away because of Christs
blood. Gods wrath has been satisfied.

Can you imagine living in Old Testament times as an Israelite? God had
initiated a Covenant or a special agreement with a big family who were
all related to a guy named Abraham. At that time, almost everything you
did in life was somehow related to what part of the family you were
from. Abrahams great-grandson Levi and his family became the family
of Priests. This meant that they would handle the special things of God.
When people sinned in Old Testament Israel and they wanted to make
things right with God, they would bring an animal or another type of
offering to the priests outside the tabernacle or the temple. Then the
Priest was responsible to offer it to God. The Priests that were in Levis
family would have to not only offer sacrifices for the other Israelites,
but also for themselves, because they were sinners also. Another big
responsibility for Levis family was for the High Priest to go to a very
special part of the Tabernacle or the Temple. It was a special room
that was called the Holy of Holies, and this room was only used once a
year. At this time, the High Priest would take blood from the atonement
(or substitute) offering into this special room and drip the blood on a
special piece of furniture called the Mercy Seat. God would look down
from above and see the substitutes blood on the seat and would give
forgiveness to his people. It sounds pretty crazy to think of it today, and
17
Melchizedek was also a Priest of God and he was a King. He lived before
any of Abrahams great-grandsons were even born. This great Priest-King
came out to congratulate and bless Abraham when he had won a victory
over his enemies. Melchizedek didnt offer a sacrifice, but instead, he
celebrated with Abraham with bread and wine.
Another one of Abrahams great grandsons was Judah, and one
day Judahs family would be the family of the kings. One of those
Descendants would be born in a stable and laid in a manger and His
name would be Jesus. Jesus was still a King, even though he wasnt
born in a palace and even though the Israelites were being controlled by
another country. Jesus was a Priest because he came to offer the final
substitute Sacrifice to God - Himself. So Jesus was a Priest-King after
the order of Melchizedek. That is what has changed for us! Since Jesus
was sinless, He was the last sacrifice that would ever have to be made.
There are no more secret rooms and no more animal blood. Instead, we
celebrate with Bread and Wine as we remember what Jesus did for us
and we look for him to come again as a great Priest and King to finish
establishing His Kingdom.

Imagine the oldest person in your life finding out that they were going
to have a baby. That in itself would be pretty remarkable but imagine
if it actually happened. Despite every biological law to the contrary,
imagine the impossible happening and this person who is old enough to
become a grandfather becomes a father. Think about how remarkable
and precious that child would be. Now imagine that before you even had
time to come to terms with this unbelievable miracle you are now told
that the child has to die.
In Genesis 15 the Lord promises a son to Abraham in his old age and
tells Abram that his descendants will outnumber the stars in the sky.
Like always, God is faithful and keeps his promise and gives Abraham a
son named Isaac, only to tell Abram in chapter 22 that Isaac must die as
a sacrifice. In the end, God rewards Abrahams faithfulness and tells him
not to harm Isaac and many years later the Messiah would come from
Isaacs lineage but imagine the pain that Abraham must have felt giving
up his precious and remarkable only son. During the Advent season we
look to this story and look ahead to the story of another promised Son
and of a good and faithful Father who would give that Son up to death
on our behalf thought it caused him greater pain than we could ever
imagine.

HOPE
FA M I LY
Today we light the first Advent candle at church, but you can do this at
home too. The only materials needed are five candles, matches and a
Bible.
Have one member of the family light the first candle, the HOPE candle.
This season we are reminded of the HOPE that we have from Jesus
coming in the flesh. It is important to realize that he was without sin
because it is not our humanity that makes us sinful - it is possible to be
human and perfect, and Jesus earthly ministry demonstrates that. But
until we are made perfect ourselves at Jesus second coming, we live in
hope. And until then, we engage in a ministry of reconciliation.
22
From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even
though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him
thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.
The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from
God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the
ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the
world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and
entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are
ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore
you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made
him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the
righteousness of God. - 2 Corinthians 5: 16-21
Prayer: Have one family member say a prayer to thank God for His
goodness and mercy in sending Jesus to rescue us from our sins and
praise Him for the hope He brings.

The Passover Lamb was without blemish; the cream off the top, not
the sludge from the bottom. The sort of valuable sacrifice that smaller
households could not muster alone. And as the Lord passed through
Egypt striking firstborns, doorways smeared in sacrificial blood were
spared. Households secured their survival by sacrificing this precious
Lamb.
God offered up a sacrifice for us. Scripture reads that Ive been
ransomed from my futile ways. And this debt was paid not with money,
but with Christs blood - like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
25
Im beginning to feel that the sin both around me and within may be
inevitable. But, through Gods supreme sacrifice, his perfect lamb, his
only son, the consequential trepidation that I deserve seems to be
traded for His grace and mercy.
And now, thanks to this, for lack of a better word, assignment, this
Christmas may be better understood as the birthday celebration of this
spotless Lamb that God sacrificed for my important, glorious, and too
often under-appreciated existence.

When Gods people, the Israelites, were slaves in Egypt, He used a
man to rally the people, confront their captors, and lead them out of
captivity into freedom and dependence on God. The man God chose to
use was Moses. Moses preached the gospel in advance to the people
of Israel, foreshadowing the greatest love story of all timea story in
which Jesus would rally the people and confront and defeat the enemy
holding them captive to sin.
As God gave water to the Israelites through Moses using the Rock at
Horeb (Exodus 17:5-6), the drinkers would become thirsty again. It
was through Jesusthe better Mosesthat God provided the water of
spiritual sustenance whose consumers would never thirst again (John
4:14). God showed Moses his glory and all his goodness (Exodus 33:19),
but in Jesus he showed all his goodness to the whole world. Truly, the
law came through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ
(John 1:17).

You see, no matter what, in spite of everything, God would love his
children with a Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Always and Forever
Love
The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, The Lord, the Lord, a God
John 1:17 says, For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth
33
The phrase grace and truth from John 1:17 is referencing Exodus 34:6
where God described his steadfast love. Jesus came to offer us the
truth that we are broken and separated from God, and GRACE
forgiveness for the sin that has separated us and a way to be reunited
with God.
His Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Always and Forever Love has been
made complete in Jesus. He has come for us. He has rescued us. And
we can trust in his steadfast love.

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse... this verse
is referring to Jesus being the shoot that will come from the family

righteousness, love and mercy. He will provide for the poor and will
judge all the wicked. He will be righteous and faithful.
Because of sin the world isnt what God meant for it to be. These last

John 1:23 says, He (John the Baptist) said, I am the voice of one crying

prophet said. Isaiahs prophecy is that John will prepare the way for
Jesus. He is the voice crying in the wilderness, preparing the way of
the Lord, and making straight the desert a highway for our God. (Isaiah
40:3). We will later see this old Isaiah prophecy, this promise, fulfilled.
John will be born and he will prepare a way for Jesus. He even leaps in
the womb in the presence of Mary!
This passage also promises a hope for Gods people. It promises comfort

When Jesus comes, it is easy to see how important he is in the story
of the Bible. Once you know about Jesus, it is fun to find in the old
testament where the text is referring to His coming. In Zechariah,
Joshua is being crowned and the text refers to a king to come known as
the Branch who will branch out and build the temple of the Lord.
This branch they are referring to is Jesus who builds disciples that
branch out all across the earth and still are today. In the temple
of the old testament, common people had to talk to the priest to
communicate with God. When Jesus comes, the text refers to the
temple he will build which is one where every person can have a
personal relationship with God that does not have barriers of hierarchy
like were found in the old testament church.

If you were going to choose where a king was going to be born, where
would you choose? Would you choose a big palace? A fancy castle? A
huge city with lots of people? Many years before it happened, God told
his people that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem, which was a very
small town without a single castle. Jesus wasnt born in a palace with
lots of really nice things, he was born in a little barn surrounded by
animals. God loves to use the smallest places and people.
Did you know that King David was also born in Bethlehem? Did you
know that David had seven older, bigger, stronger and faster brothers?
God chose the smallest one (David) to be King. And he turned out to be
the great-great-great-grandfather of Jesus. God doesnt choose people
because they are the best, the biggest, the strongest or the fastest. He
chooses people who need him. How do you need God?

And even before birth, Jesus was the one in whom John delighted (Luke

adulthood as John and Jesus met in the accounts of John 1. John walked
in the assurance that he was born to point people to Jesus.
Even when his disciples tried to spark jealousy over Jesuss popularity,
John remained certain that his role was to point people to Jesus, saying,
The bride [the church] belongs to the bridegroom [Jesus]. The friend who

The Book of John opens up with a familiar phrase, In the Beginning
But this isnt the Genesis story of Creation. Its actually an account of the
birth of Christ, who existed with God before Creation. In the first eight
verses of the book, John repeatedly describes Jesus as the Word and his
imagery is rich in meaning. Calling Jesus The Word conveys the Truth of
what he says, that He speaks creation into being, and that He is able to
have a personal relationship with His children through His words. He is
not an impersonal Deity but a loving Father...a Father who brings life and
pierces the darkness with light.
But God sent another man as well; a man named John the Baptist to
come before the Christ and prepare the hearts of men. By Johns zealous
testimony, many came to believe in the salvation of Jesus.
The days of Advent are fertile ground for sharing the Good News of
Christmas. In what ways do you need to be reminded of His deep, abiding
love for you today? And who else in your life needs to be reminded of the
goodness, power and eternal love of The Word?

John 1:1-8
by justin burkhead
John 1:9-18 reminds us that Christmas is a celebration of something
spiritual combined with material. Whenever we are eating physical turkey
and opening physical gifts, we are to remember that Jesus became flesh.
Even though he was without sin, he took on sinful flesh. Even though
he did not deserve to die, he took on flesh and died. At Christmas we
celebrate a doctrine called the incarnation. The incarnation is the event of
the second person of the Trinity becoming human.
And this is an act of love. Passages like this one remind us that the
incarnation is a real benefit to us! And while theres certainly more than
our benefit going on here, we ought to spend time reflecting upon the
love of God. Your mind will be filled with tons of gifts and plans this
season, but make sure its the gift and plan of God!

Luke 1:5-25
by casey sigler
The Advent Story is not happenstance. Our God is a God of order and
His plan for our redemption was beautifully and intricately woven
from Creation to the Resurrection. Luke 1 tells us about Elizabeth and
Zechariah and their baby John. It seems almost like a subplot to Gabriel
and the Virgin riding a donkey to Bethlehem and the stars and the stable.
But its just as important a part of the story as anything else. This little
baby, filled with the Holy Spirit even in his Mamas aging womb, was going
to be an integral part of the story. His role was to devote every breath
to the proclamation of the coming Messiah. In the 400 years between
the Old Testament and the beginning of the New Testament, there had
been no prophets speaking truth to the nation of Israel. The story of John
the Baptist introduces a new era for the JewsGod has raised up a new
prophet to declare a Savior.
We know by verses 13-14 that Zechariah has been on his knees in prayer.
We can assume that he has been asking God for a child. The passage
makes clear that he and Elizabeth were barren and aging. But we can also
assume that, as a priest entering the temple of the Lord, he had been
praying for his people. What amazement he must have felt to hear the
words, Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard Not
only is a baby coming, but a baby set apart, a baby filled with the Holy
Spirit, a baby that will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord
55
their God. Can you imagine his joy? God then makes Zechariah mute and
vows that he will be unable to speak until all that has been promised
has come to pass. Even though he couldnt express exactly what he had
experienced in the temple, what a mercy to know that he would see the
day this prophecy would be fulfilled!
Elizabeth conceived soon after the angel came to Zechariah and she
kept to herself for five months. Verse 25 tells us that she spent this time
worshipping God for His faithfulness. His timing may not have been her
own but how perfect it was! Spend some time today reflecting on Gods
timing in your lifehow has He proven His faithfulness to you or what can
you thank Him for, even in your waiting? Meditate on His order in His own
story of Advent and how that relates to your everyday life.

And blessed is she who believed that there would be fulfillment of what
was spoken to her from the Lord.
If youve ever been pregnant or put your hand on a pregnant belly and
felt a sweet little kick, it usually warms your heart and brings a smile to
your face. Can you imagine how Elizabeth felt when she felt the baby
leap in her womb, the baby she had so longed years for. And John
didnt just leap, he leaped for joy. Do you feel joy when you think about
Christ and his fulfillment for you? Do you feel joy when you think about
Christs return? Christmas time is a season of joy. We can feel joy when
we are with our family, when we open presents, and when we decorate
our Christmas tree. But our joy should mostly come from remembering
Christs birth as a baby. That baby would sacrifice himself for you. That
should bring the greatest joy to your heart!
In verse 42, Elizabeth calls Mary blessed. She is blessed for her faith,
but she is most blessed for the privilege she has of bearing the Son of
God. Praise God today for fulfilling his promise in Christ Jesus. Praise Him
today for loving you and bringing our Savior in the form of a sweet baby.

Its been a difficult year for my family. To be honest I wont be sad to see
the calendar change from 2016 to 2017. But reading this passage my heart
fills with gratitude for Advent, sharply shining in the darkness of this year
is the brightest light. An Almighty God has seen our suffering. He has sent
us a Savior.

Today we light the third Advent candle at church, but you can do this
at home too. The only materials needed are five candles, matches and
a Bible. Have one member of the family light the candles from the first
two weeks and the third Advent candle, the JOY candle. As Christians,
our true JOY comes from the fact that God sent his son with the result
that our status has changed from slave to heir.

he brings rescuing us from our bondage by making us true heirs of his

Elizabeth gives birth in this passage to John the Baptist. This is so
important because he was born to prepare a way for Jesus. Think of all
the years Elizabeth waited for a son and now her son would prepare the
way for the coming King! The prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled with Johns
birth. Johns father Zechariah finally speaks and says, and you, child, will
be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord
to prepare his ways and referring Jesus to give light to those who sit in
darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of
peace.
How can we prepare the way for Jesus this Advent? There are only 5 more
days until Christmas. Yes, you heard me5 days left! Have you done a
good job preparing the way in your home? Have you prepared the way in
your heart? Have you prepared the way with your gifts, traditions, and
decorations? Ask God to help you prepare the way for Jesus these last 5
days before Christmas day. Jesus is a light to the darkness. Dont forget
that as the next few days get busy with gift giving and travels. Share the
light with someone who may not know. Dont let the stress of Christmas
activities and wrapping presents quench His light inside of you.

Lets take a closer look at the magnificent names given to Jesus, before
he was even born!
Wonderful Counselor- Wonderful is a word I hear all of the time. It
was interesting after digging into the word, wonderful, how weighty
that word really is. It actually means incomprehensible and beyond
understanding. Jesus was sent to us on that Christmas night, to guide us
as our counselor in ways that our brains cannot even fathom!
Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for being our Wonderful Counselor!
Mighty God- Imagine looking at baby Jesus, seeing Him as the Mighty God
that He is! When I think of mighty, words like -strong, powerful, warrior,
and even fear come to mind.
I remember a scene from the Narnia series where young Lucy asks about
Aslan, Is he quite safe?
And Mr. Beaver responded, Safe? Who said anything about safe? Course
he isnt safe. But hes good. Hes the King, I tell you.
It is amazing that our God is full of love and might at the same time.
What an all-encompassing God!
Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for being our Mighty God!
Everlasting Father- Some of us may feel sad when we think of the word,
father, either because we had fathers who were wonderful but are no
longer with us, or because we have longings for the kind of father weve
never had. I love this name given to Jesus because it gives hope and

An angel delivered Joseph a very important message. The baby that Mary
was carrying would save the world from their sins. He was a gift from
God. Mary and Joseph didnt have to wonder what they would name this
baby. The angel told them that His name was Jesus. This baby would also
be called Immanuel. Immanuel means God with us. Jesus coming to
earth was Gods way of connecting us to Him. What a gift! This tiny baby
would become our Savior. He would grow up, live a sinless life, and die
an undeserved death so that we can have peace with God. This was God
with us. In Matthew 28:20, Jesus told His disciples after He had risen
from the dead I am with you always, to the end of the age. Even now,
He is still with us. He is true to the name that He was given. Thank you,
God, for the incredible gift of our Jesus!

The star was a symbol of Jesus for the wise men to follow. What is cool
about the wise men is that God knew that they would be one of the first
ones to see baby Jesus and find him and experience that
crazy awesomeness!
Can you imagine giving a gift to baby Jesus and being the first one to
see him? I would be worried about how to please him and what kind of
gift to bring. What gift would be good enough for him because he is so
powerful and mighty?
This Christmas is not at all about giving gifts or pleasing others. Its
about remembering the one who died on the cross for our sins,
Jesus Christ.

Luke 2:21-35

Have you ever had someone promise you something, but then it seemed
like it took forever for that promise to be fulfilled? I can only imagine
how this man Simeon must have felt. The Holy Spirit had promised him
that he wouldnt die until he saw a very special person. Simeon, like
many others may have thought that his Savior would be a man of valormaybe some kind of soldier or a Royal king. But instead, one day God
woke up Simeon and told him to go to a temple. He was probably looking
around for the tallest person or maybe the best looking or strongest
person. But then, God led Simeon to a small new born boy with two
young and poor looking parents. Instead of being let down, Simeon was
ecstatic! He took baby Jesus in his arms and praised God. This Baby was
going to be the Glory of Israel. This baby was going to be the salvation
and the light to the Gentiles. This baby that Simeon now held was going
to be his salvation also.
God had kept His promise to Simeon and He will keep his promises to
us also. God has made a Covenant or special agreement with everyone
who has accepted the free gift of Salvation Jesus provided for us. When
we have this gift, we become part of Jesus Church. God promises that
the Church will continue on until He comes back. He promises that He
74
will bring His Kingdom to completion one day. He promises to bless us.
Most importantly, He promises that if we are in Him, we will always be
with Him. We get part of this promise now when the Holy Spirit comes to
live in us at salvation. We will enjoy the rest of that promise for eternity
when we, like Simeon, get to see Jesus face to face. Jesus is no longer a
little baby, but He is our eternal king. He bears the scars of his crucifixion
as a never ending reminder that those who are saved are His and that
we are free from the bondage of sin. These scars show us that God will
always keep His promise, even when we dont deserve it.

Isaiah 11 is a message to Gods people at a time when it doesnt look like
God has been faithful. Its no different today and we look around and
see terrible things happening and are constantly being challenged as to
whether or not God is good and faithful. At the very least we can hope
for a leader and a Savior who embodies all the characteristics that Isaiah
talks about. Even with nonbelievers or Bible skeptics, we cannot deny
how good this description sounds. As Christians however we know that
what is said hear about the stump of Jesse, its true. We as Christians
alone have the good news.
Its sad to me to think about how many nonbelievers will celebrate today
having no idea what theyre actually celebrating. As Christians we believe
a very particular story, the Gospel. We live in a world where Satan has
tricked people into thinking that getting a material gift from a fat guy in a
red suit is better news than our sins being forgiven by the very God that
created us. So, for the Christian, on the one hand, Christmas is a day of
celebration when the creator of the heavens and the earth took on flesh
so that he could be with us in a special way, and could eventually offer
his body as a sacrifice for us. On the other hand we are saddened by how
far weve come from this good news in todays meeting. Its OK to live in
this tension of joy and burden, because its no different than what Jesus
felt when he obeyed the father and died on the cross knowing that the
spirit was coming to bring about the redemption of Gods people.

The day has come! Jesus is born! Place your baby Jesus in your manger
that you made earlier this month. Celebrate His birth with your children.
Let your kids take turns holding baby Jesus, talking to him and even

Jesus this Christmas! And then light your final Advent candle as follows.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the
world should be registered. This was the first registration when
Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to
his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town
of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,
because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with
Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the
time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son
and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because
there was no place for them in the inn.
81
And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping
watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to
them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled
with great fear. And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring
you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you
is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And
this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling
cloths and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with
whom he is pleased!
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said
to one another, Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that
has happened, which the Lord has made known to us. And they went
with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger.
And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told
them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the
shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering
them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising
God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. LUKE

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as
a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to
fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not
wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the
day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away
with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and
the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these
things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives
of holiness and Godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day
of God, because of which the heavens will be set on re and dissolved, and
the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we
are waiting for new heavens which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved,
since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or
blemish, and at peace.
