The Keeper
New Museum Of Contemporary Art 2016 ISBN 9780915557127 Acqn 26611
Hb 16x24cm 288pp 398ills 292col 47.95
The Keeper accompanies an exhibition dedicated to the act of preserving objects, artworks and
images. Through a variety of imaginary museums, personal collections and unusual
assemblages, it offers a reflection on the impulse to save both the most precious and the
apparently valueless, and reveals the devotion with which artists, collectors, scholars and
hoarders have created sanctuaries for endangered images and artifacts.
Through works spanning the 20th century, The Keeper tells the stories of various individuals
through the objects they chose to safeguard. Some, such as Roger Caillois' collection of rare
stones and Harry Smith's string figures, pursue a universal syntax. Other collections were not so
much kept as withheld, such as Hilma af Klint's suite of abstract paintings from 190615, which
she kept hidden for decades after her death, venturing that her work would be better appreciated
beyond her own time. Shinro Ohtake's feverishly collaged scrapbooks burst with found materials
as free associations of images and everyday ephemera. In a ceremonious personal custom, Ye
Jinglu had a studio portrait of himself taken every year for decades. These photos, preserved by
Tong Bingxue, represent collecting as a mode of auto-ethnography that inadvertently also traces
social and political changes over time. The centerpiece of the book is a vast display conceived by
Ydessa Hendeles, composed of over 3,000 family album photographs of people posing with
teddy bears, and vitrines containing antique teddy bears.
Edited by Massimiliano Gioni, Natalie Bell. Foreword by Lisa Phillips. Text by Massimiliano Gioni,
Ed Atkins, Wilson Bentley, Marguerite Yourcenar, Ydessa Hendeles, Robert H. Boyle, Loretta
Pettway, Zofia Rydet, John Cohen, Harry Smith, Orhan Pamuk.

Miss Van - El Viento En Mi Pelo

CAC Malaga 2016 ISBN 9788494435461 Acqn 26655
Pb 22x25cm 100pp 51ills 44col 27
Born in Toulouse, Miss Van is considered one of the best-known painters of the graffiti scene. In
her work, which has moved from urban canvases into galleries over the years, hair is a device
that keeps the artist in touch with her emotions: its manifestations display different sides of the
same person. Hair forms a protective halo around her muses, who are simultaneously innocent in
appearance yet perverse in their poses and attitudes, while animal masks and garish costumes
add mystery and subtly. As such, her work represents both stereotypical and realistic aspects of
feminine nature. This exhibition and catalogue is devoted to recent paintings produced in the last
three years.

Pilar Albarracin - Ritos De Fiesta Y Sangre

CAC Malaga 2016 ISBN 9788494435454 Acqn 26657
Pb 22x25cm 122pp 83ills 71col 33.75
Known for her performances, video works, drawings, photography, and interactive sculptural
installations, Pilar Albarracn chooses symbols of popular culture and adopts a specific stance
towards them, using imagery thick with timeworn clichs and thus also opening dialogues that
question their authenticity. Her focus is on the cultural construction of Spanish identity, especially
that of the Spanish woman, and her representations are often highly theatrical and full of
parodies. Like the exhibition at CAC Mlaga, this catalogue presents a selection of moments in
Albarracns recent work. Seemingly disparate in nature, the works are united by their didactic
nature.

Alan Shields - Protracted Simplicity 1944-2005

Aspen Art Press 2016 ISBN 9780934324748 Acqn 26292
Pb 19x26cm 260pp 200ills 150col 57
This monograph, published on the occasion of the Aspen Art Museum exhibition of Alan Shields
(19442005) in summer 2016, showcases a comprehensive survey of the artists expansive
practice, which encompassed printmaking, painting, sculpture and installation. Moving easily
between these different mediums, Shields, with his deep consideration of material and colour,
was interested in opening up a broader context of art, creating objects that could be experienced
in relation to the movement of the human body.
The artworks, essays and interviews in this publication not only examine Shields layered pieces,
but also illustrate his belief in a direct connection between art and life, revealing a multifaceted
practice that merges the sculptural, the painterly and the theatrical.

Clare Rojas - Plain Black

Kavi Gupta 2016 ISBN 9780692666456 Acqn 26345
Hb 27x30cm 208pp 208col ills 47.95
This volume--the first on the artist in many years--surveys the recent abstractions of the muchadmired San Francisco painter Clare Rojas (born 1976). Known for her association with a
generation of artists that became internationally prominent through the exhibition Beautiful
Losers, Rojas in her earlier paintings drew from various Russian and Eastern European folkloric
subjects. While the figures have been removed from this more recent body of work, it is not hard
to see their enduring impact on Rojas art: with their lively angularity and bold chromaticism, these
paintings are equally evocative of folk art and the formalist reductions of key modernist abstract
artists such as Alexander Calder, Matisse, Malevich or Ellsworth Kelly. Accompanying these
works is an essay by the curator and Deputy Director of the Jewish Museum, Jens Hoffmann, and
a poem by David Whyte.

symbol of post-war paranoia become the utopian metaphor for todays interconnected world?
'Under the Clouds' presents the interrelated effects and affects of these two clouds on life and
work, leisure and love, and on images, bodies and minds. With contributions by Thomas
Hirschhorn, Sean Landers, Metahaven, Seth Price, Joo Ribas, Frances Stark, Hito Steyerl, and

David Salle - Inspired By True-life Events

CAC Malaga 2016 ISBN 9788494435478 Acqn 26830
Hb 24x31cm 112pp 36ills 35col 40
It is said that American artist David Salle helped define postmodern sensibility in art. This
catalogue is published on the occasion of an exhibition at CAC Mlaga showing 32 of his
paintings, created between 1992 and the present day. Many are large-format works that reflect
Salles characteristically rich pictorial language and numerous visual sources, which range from
art history and design to advertising and pop culture. His realm of cultural and artistic references,
not to mention his questioning of hierarchical and closed systems, however, often eludes the
confines of classification through his process of selection and interruption, in turn generating
different interpretations.

Ugo Rondinone is celebrated for his wide-ranging exploration of materials and practices that
confront the binary between the human condition and the natural world. This comprehensive
catalogue, titled 'Feelings', documents the artist's use of quarried stone to construct monolithic
figurative works. The artist first began this ongoing body of work as a commission for the Public
Art Fund at Rockefeller Center where he erected massive rough-hewn bluestone figures in the
centre of New York City. Published by Kukje Gallery to coincide with their exhibition of the same
name, 'Feelings' presents all of Rondinone's exhibitions over the past three years that feature the
stone figures.

Jonas Wood Portraits

Karma 2016 ISBN 9781942607403 Acqn 26893
Hb 21x26cm 92pp 86col ills 36
The latest book from Los Angeles-based artist Jonas Wood (born 1977) follows the style of his
previous publications Sports Book and Interiors, this time taking up the subject of portraiture.
Portraits compiles the many works completed over Woods career, done in a variety of media,
and with a range of subjects and sitters, including paintings of artist friends, self-portraits, intimate
familial moments in domestic interiors and the artists own cultural and sports heroes, from
basketball players and boxers to Philip Guston and Pablo Picassothough Woods esteem for
these figures is beside the point, as he notes: "I dont depict only those athletes who have
meaning for me. Sometimes it is about the images being interesting, or that I like the colour of the
card, and sometimes it is about loving the athlete." Woods subjects are presented in bright light
with lively colour, graphic flatness and minute detail rendered impeccably.
