Name: Daniel Languay

Date: 07/10/2016
Time: 11:01 to 12:14
Duration: 73 Minutes

Objectives
(SWBAT)

Course: Science and Technology

Cycle/Year: 2/2
# of students: 23

Students will individually complete a concentration quiz.

By the end of this class, students will be able to individually answer a question
asking them to identify whether different substances will conduct electricity when
placed in solution based on their chemical formula.

Big Idea

Matter is made up of tiny particles.

Subject Specific
Competencies

Understands the scientific principles underlying the issue.

-Students will be able to describe electrolytes qualitatively and
understand why they allow solution to conduct electricity.

Progression of
Learning Topics

3. Properties of Solutions
e. Electrolytes Defines the concept of electrolytes.
c. Electrolytic dissociation Describes electrolytic dissociation.
d. Electrical conductivity - Describes the mechanism that allows aqueous
solutions to conduct electricity (electrolytic dissolution of a solute,
formation of mobile ions)

Materials needed

Electrolyte Worksheet.

Context

We have finished the concentration section of the solutions unit so the students
will be writing their concentration quiz in the first half of class.
We will then be starting electrolytes, which is the next section in the solutions
unit. Students were given a very brief introduction to this topic last class.

Vocabulary

Electrolyte: a substance that produces an electrically conducting solution when

dissolved in a polar solvent, such as water.
Electrolytic Dissociation: the separation of the molecule of an electrolyte into its
constituent atoms

Assessment Activity #1: Concentration Quiz
Students will be spread out around the room before being given their quiz. There
are not enough tables for everyone to sit by themselves, so I will ask those who
are sitting right next to someone to create a barrier using their binders. Students
will be asked to not talk until everyone has finished writing the quiz. Once
everyone has settled and stopped talking I will pass out the quiz.
During the quiz I will circulate throughout the room in case there are any
questions and I will pick up the quizzes as students finish.

11:35 12:10

Learning Activity #1: Electrolyte Notes

I will start by showing them a short video of someone talking about how their
Samsung galaxy note 7 caught on fire recently. I will go on to explain that the
battery in the phone had malfunctioned causing a short circuit. I will talk about
how batteries contain electrolytes that allow ions to travel from one terminal to
the other. In Li-ion batteries, these electrolytes are flammable, and the short
circuit is what set them off causing the phone to burn.
I will then quickly review what we talked about during the short introduction to
the topic we did last class before continuing the notes.
After we pass the section talking about electrolytic dissociation, I will show them
the Phet simulation on salt solutions. This simulation gives a good visual on
what exactly happens when an electrolyte is dissolved in water. I will also be
able to point out that as the concentration of my electrolyte increases, the
conductivity of my solution also increases. I will be asking students to participate
by giving me their predictions about what will happen when I add the different
substances to the solution.
I will then continue the notes until we reach the past exam questions. I will stop
there and use those questions as a short review of the topic at the start of next
class.
I am not sure if these notes will take the entire time I have set aside for them. It
will largely depend on whether the students have a lot of questions or struggle to
grasp the topic. In case it takes less time than I have planned, I will have an
electrolyte worksheet that they can start working on.

12:10 12:14

Assessment: Short Answer Question

At 12:10 I will stop the class and ask them to put away their notes and take out a
piece of paper. I will then project a word document with the chemical formulas of
several different substances. I will ask the students to tell me which ones are
electrolytes.
Homework: No homework.

Differentiation

Students will write notes, listen to explanations and be shown a visual simulation
of electrolytic dissociation.
