Taking Responsibility

Biblical Insight

A family living together under the same roof must work

together for the common good. Sometimes this means subordinating your wants and needs for the good of the group.
Living together as a family means all living by the same set
of rules and standards or chaos results. Once you are on your
own, you can establish your own rules and guidelines, but as
long as youre a part of a household, you must defer to the
unity and good of that household. Therefore, when parents
say to do something or not to do something, we must honor
their wishes even if we dont agree or understand their reasoning.
The Bible lists blessings and curses for
sons. Exodus 20:12 states that obedience to
parents will result in long life. Deuteronomy
21:1821 details the consequences of rebellion toward a parent, death by stoning.

Using a separate sheet of paper, write a modern-day version of the Parable of the Lost Son (Luke 15:1132). Work
as a group to create your version.

Composition

Here are some scriptural keys to family living. Look up the following verses, summarize what is said, and show how they relate to the issue of living as
a family under one roof.
Psalm 133:1
Proverbs 10:12

Evaluation
Sometimes brothers and sisters secretly
harbor envy and jealousy like the older son in
the Parable of the Lost Son (Luke 15:1132).
They may remain obedient on the surface, but
carry rage inside when they suspect parental
bias in favor of a sibling. The older brother
mistakenly saw the members of his own family as his enemies when the real enemy of the
family is Satan. If you had been a friend of
the older brother, what would you have said
to him on that day?

Proverbs 11:29
Mark 3:25
Romans 14:19

Discussion

Jesus taught that each member of a family must take responsibility to work
with the others for the common good. Read Matthew 21:2831 and contrast
the responses of the sons.
