1. WhilewaitingforthebuswewillusethedoccamtoexplorethePublix
website.Wewilllookatthedeliitemsandservices,thebakeryitemsand
services,theproductcatalogfortheweekandanyotherentitiesofthesite
thestudentswanttoexploreinordertogainsomepreknowledgeofthe
servicestheyhavetooffer.
2. Studentswillbeaskedwhatkindsofthingstheyanticipateseeingthatthey
havelearnedthroughouttheweek.
3. Studentswilltakeacopyoftheirfieldtriplog,aclipboardandapencil.
Thelogistobefilledoutduringthefieldtripandturnedinasan
assessmentofcontentlearned.Thelogwillinclude:Descriptionofthetrip,
favoritepart,leastfavoritepart,threenewthingslearnedandmost/least
expensiveitemsfound.
4. Asaclasswewilldiscussconductexpectationsaswellasencouragegood
questionaskingandevendiscussexamplequestions,e.g.howdoyou
decidewhatgoesonsaleeachweek?Whokeepstrackofthemoneyinthe
store?
5. OnceatPublix,studentswillbegreetedbythemanagerwhowilltakethe
wholeclassonatourofthestore,includingthebackofhouseineach
department(bakery,deli,produce)andwilltalktothestudentsaboutthe
differentjobsthattheemployeeshaveandadviceaboutbudgetingwhile
shoppingandexploringhowpricingandsaleswork.
6. Childrenwillthenbreakoffintopreassignedgroupswiththeirassigned
parent/chaperonetofindtheirassigneditems.($15togetalloftheitemsto
bakeapiefromaprintedlistofingredients.)Studentshave15minutesto
completetheactivity.Theywillroundupordowntothenearestdollarto
makethematheasier.*Chaperonewillcarrythebasket.Studentswillhave
tochoosetheiritemswiselyinordertogeteverythingtheyneed,i.e.take
advantageofsalesandkeeppricesinmind.
7. *ESOLandESEstudentswillbeintheteacherledgroupalongwitha
coupleofstrongstudentstohelpguidetheactivity.Ifachaperonespeaks
nativelanguageofESOLstudent,he/shecanbepairedaccordingly.
8. Eachgroupwillmeetattheregisterattheendofthe15minuteswherean
employeewillringthemuptoseeiftheymettheirbudgetwithintheir
allottedtime.
9. EachstudentwillbegivenaPublixpinbeforeleavingtoheadbackto
schoolforlunch.
10. Oncebackintheclassroom,wewillhaveagranddiscussiontoreflecton
ourtripandstudentswillhavetimetofinishfillingouttheirlogstoturnin.
11. Wewillwrapupthelessonbyhavingstudentswriteinathankyoucardto
thePublixmanager.
