RAs stage mock car crash to raise awareness of drunk driving - NEWS 11/25/08 12:15 PM

Issue date: 3/9/07 Section: NEWS

NT students stood in the blazing
sun and watched the scene of an
accident unfold yesterday
afternoon on the campus green.
Sirens sounded and people
watched as a policeman covered
a young girl's body on the
ground, while another policeman
gave the driver a sobriety test to
see if he had been drinking. A
Chevy pick-up truck and a Mazda
laid in ruins behind them.
This scene was a mock car crash,
an enactment of something that
occurs every 31 minutes in the
United States, according to the
Center for Disease Control and
Prevention. Media Credit: Kevin Nichols
According to the center, every
two minutes, someone is injured
from an alcohol-related car accident and someone dies about every half an hour.
The "Mock Car Crash" that happened on campus came about as a result of Resident Assistants collaborating
to put on a program about alcohol awareness, said Gilpatrick Hornsby, Lakewood, Wash. sophomore.
Hornsby, coordinator of the event, said the Mock Car Crash, was similar to "Shattered Dreams," a high
school program allowing students to see a live enactment of an accident involving police, medical personnel
and students.
"A lot of times, people get to college and forget programs from high school," Hornsby said. "I wanted to do
this program so others can experience things they missed in high school."
Hornsby said he desired the program to be tailored toward alcohol awareness as a whole and not just
drinking and driving.
Grand Prairie sophomore, Amber Renae Bush wrote the script. She said her goal was to help students see
hands-on the expressions and experience the moment.
"I wanted the audience to really understand the effects of drinking and driving to the extreme," Bush said.
Following the car accident scene, Mitch Land, director of the Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism and
former President of MADD, spoke to students about his son, who he lost as a result of a drunk driver.
Land said his son, Austin, was an NT student and marketing major who was engaged to be married.
Land said though the driver spent 18 months behind bars, his family was "sentenced to a life without
Austin."
Austin was 22 years old when a drunk driver ran into him on Highway 121 in Lewisville, Land said.
"The driver won't discriminate against you on the basis of religion, race, gender or sexual orientation," Land
said. "Know that death by drunk driving is an equal opportunity way to die."
Guest speaker Robert Crawford, Lewisville resident and retired law enforcement officer, talked about who
he lost from an accident on the same highway.

RAs stage mock car crash to raise awareness of drunk driving - NEWS 11/25/08 12:23 PM

Issue date: 3/9/07 Section: NEWS

Crawford said his daughter was pregnant with twins before a driver with a blood alcohol content two times
the limit hit her car, killing her, his son-in-law and 13-month old grandchild.
"The pain and suffering goes out like ripples on a pond," Crawford said, describing the effect that he said
drinking and driving causes.
"It's been 13 years. As a parent, you never get over the loss of your child," Crawford said.
Grandview sophomore Rachel Stanley said that Crawford's story really hit home with her. She said her
mother was hit by an impaired driver who was strung-out on drugs.
"I hope this makes people stop and think twice," Stanley said, "People should care more about others out
there and think about others they may hurt."
Courtney Pardue, Ponder junior and RA at Maple, said the RAs involved raised over $2,400 for the Mock
Car Crash.
"Instead of the living room at Maple where maybe 30 students would attend, we've made it a campus-wide
event where thousands of students are able to come out and see it," Pardue said.
Pardue said the cars used were donated by Denton County Auto Salvage, and EJ's towing moved the cars to
and from the crash site, two of many sponsors.
Other sponsors include NT Housing, the Substance Abuse Resource Center, the Student Government
Association and the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities, to name a few.
On-campus sponsors for the event helped educate students about substance abuse by setting up booths
around the site and handing out information about the potential dangers of alcohol.
Mr. Jim's Pizza donated 120 pizzas. Soft drinks, cotton candy and popcorn were also provided to students
free of charge.
The event lasted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Real life 'Hitch' teaches students about dating

By: Randi Crowder

Posted: 2/14/07

NT students received dating advice from the real life "Hitch" Monday night at an event called "Dating Boot
Camp."
The program began at 7 p.m. and took place in the University Union's Silver Eagle Suite. Hosted by the
University Program Council and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, the program gave students the opportunity to
learn the basics of dating.
Dating consultant David Wygant spoke about creating dating opportunities. He said the movie "Hitch,"
starring Hollywood actor Will Smith, was based on Wygant's job.
"Everyone's always looking for that clever thing to break the ice," Wygant said Monday night. "There is no
clever thing."
Wygant said he pitched the story to producers four years ago. He also said he has worked with clients all
over the country.
According to davidwygant.com, Wygant has appeared on the "Late Show with Jay Leno," MTV, NBC's
"Dateline" and in magazines and other news publications to give advice in his area of expertise.
"Crushes are like milk containers," Wygant said. "Each crush should expire after a week."
Jada Morrow, president of the council and Kappa Alpha Psi member, said the council created Dating Boot
Camp because most college students seem to deal with this issue.
Earlina Green, the hot topics coordinator for the council, helped coordinate the event.
"I made this program for students to be able to kick back, let loose and have a little more fun," Green said.
During the program, Wygant called on members of the audience to come up to the stage. Students acted out
situations many people experience at parties and social gatherings.
"It surprised me when he asked me to go up," said Jena Walker, McKinney junior.
Walker tried to get her friend to volunteer, but Wygant chose her to come up instead.
"I learned a lot," Walker said. "He's very personable."
Round Rock junior Andres Pulido said he enjoyed the question and answer session the most.
"There was a lot more things he could have discussed in greater detail," Pulido said. "I wish he could have
stayed longer."
At the end of his program, Wygant stressed the importance of positive energy.
"Life's all about energy," Wygant said. "If you've got good energy, people are attracted to you."
Wygant covered many topics about dating, including getting over the initial fear of speaking to someone
attractive, learning how to spark conversation and understanding the opposite sex.
Wygant wrote a book called "Always Talk to Strangers." He said he wrote the book for both men and
women, and the book addresses common issues of both sexes.
"The more risks you take, the better chance that you will meet someone you vibe with," Wygant said.

Dont Believe the Hype: A Reality Check on American Teen Pregnancy 11/25/08 12:17 PM

Both pregnancies help shed light on the reality that many teens
ignore: having sex produces babies. Youre probably thinking,
Thank you for pointing out the obvious, but I think sometimes
we lose a sense of reality when "expressing love.

It's clear that Hollywood

glamorizes sex and pregnancy
on popular television shows
and magazines. Before
celebrities such as Halle Berry
and Christina Aguilera gave
birth, they bared their bellies on
the cover of InStyle and Marie
Claire. At 17, Jamie Lynn
Spears (singer Britney Spears
younger sister) gave birth and
was later featured holding her
newborn on the cover of OK!
Magazine. In the article, Spears was quoted as saying, she had
a perfect pregnancy and perfect delivery and that being a
mom is the best feeling in the world.

Hollywood shouldnt ignore the fact that this girl was still legally
a child at the time she had her child and that the day-to-day
responsibilities Jamie Lynn will have to face as a mother. She
didnt exactly have the best role model after her older sister
struggled to keep custody of her children.

I believe Hollywood has gone too far in elevating pregnancy. It

truly can be a beautiful thing if done correctly and at the
appropriate time. This glamorization of teen pregnancy gives
young girls a false sense of reality as to what comes with
bearing a child and caring for another life. Many of us
sometimes forget that Hollywood fails to mention the sleepless
nights, constant crying, dirty diapers, doctor visits, feeding and
expenses that come along with ones beautiful bundle of joy.

Although the rate of teen pregnancy in the U.S. has steadily

declined since 1990, about one-third of girls get pregnant
before age 20. Findings show that these girls are less likely to
go to college and are usually single parents.

I currently live in Texas,

where every three hours a 15-
year-old gets pregnant while
new teens get pregnant every
10 minutes. The rate is much
higher for African-Americans,
who are three times more

likely than Caucasians to get

pregnant. I dare you to
Google your state department
of health and see what comes
up!

When choosing to have sex, we all run the risk of getting

pregnant or contracting a sexually transmitted disease. I pray
that you choose abstinence, a personal choice I have made
myself. And dont believe the hype about any teens perfect
pregnancy. Get the facts here: www.stayteen.org.
