Before you can begin to learn to drive you must make sure you have a STUDENT
PERMIT and are PHYSICALLY FIT.
The main legal requirement in respect of this is your eyesight. You must be able to
read a new style car number plate at a distance of 30 meters about 6 car lengths
with glasses or contact lenses, if normally worn.

Lesson aims and objectives

The main aim of the first lesson is to get you moving. To achieve this you will need
to learn about the function of the controls, pre-start comfort and safety (the cockpit
drill), precautions before starting the engine, moving off and stopping.

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE:

STEP 1. THE COCKPIT DRILL
The cockpit drill consists of the DOORS, SEAT, STEERING, SEAT BELT and MIRRORS.
To aid in learners remembering this procedure,
DSSSM ROUTINE:
The cockpit drill consists of the Doors, Seat, Steering,Seat belt and Mirrors.
To aid in learners remembering this procedure, it is abbreviated to DSSSM.

PROCEDURE:
STEP 1. DOORS
Make sure that all the doors are firmly shut. Take special care if you are carrying
children. Use child locks if your car has them.

STEP 2. HOW TO START THE ENGINE
NOTE: THERE ARE 3 GENERAL RULE TO START THE ENGINE.

SAFE STARTING
1. FOOT ON THE BRAKE, PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL UP TO THE BITTING POINT.
2. CLUTCH DOWN (FULL CLUTCH) ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR.
3. SELECT NEUTRAL POSITION
4. START THE IGNITION KEY AND COUNT 1001, 1002, THEN RELEASE.

QUICK START
1. PRESS BRAKE PEDAL UPTO THE BITTING POINT, AND CLUTCH DOWN ALL THE WAY
TO THE FLOOR BOARD

2. START THE IGNITION KEY TILL THE ENGINE START.COUNT 1001,10002.(TWO

SECOND RULE)

JUMP START
1 TURN THE IGNITION KEY IN ON POSITION,
2 .SELECT 2ND GEAR OR 3RD GEAR,THEN CLUTCH DOWN (ALL THE WAY DOWN TO
THE FLOOR BOARD) THEN LET THE CAR ROLL down TILL IT GETS A
MOMENTUM,THEN SUDDENLY RELEASE THE CLUTCH JUST A SECOND, THEN PRESS
THE CLUTCH DOWN .
STEP 3. APPLY THE P.O.M. ROUTINE
MOVING OFF IS EASY, SO LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THE POM ROUTINE Maneuver.
P.O.M. ROUTINE:
The POM driving routine Prepare, observe and move routine is essential for every
learner driver to use. Many driving test are failed simply for moving the car off from
either a stationary parked position or in traffic. This tutorial explains what POM is
and when to apply this routine in a driving test.
(P.) PREPARATION

MAKE SURE THE CAR IS READY TO MOVE.

1.

FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL PRESS UP TO THE BITTING POINT, THEN PRESS
THE CLUTCH DOWN UP TO THE FLOOR BOARD AND HOLD PERFECTLY STILL,

2.

Select 1st gear.

3.

Disengaged parking brake.

(O.) OBSERVATION

MAKE SURE THE CAR IS SAFE TO MOVE.

1. Signal intention, OBSERVE TRAFIC AHEAD AND BEHIND, THEN,
(M.) MANEUVER
1. MOVE TO THE CORRECT POSITION OF THE LANE.

PROCEDURES IN MOVING OFF

MOVING OFF AND FINDING THE BITING POINT
Half way clutch is generally known as the bite point, Its the friction point, It is the
working level, This is the first point the clutch plates come into contact and start to
generate movement.
NOTE:
When attempting to get the car to move off it is important that until the movement
is generated, the clutch remains held on the bite point. When you released the
clutch pedal above biting point you stall the engine or the engine will stop.

MOVING OFF DEPEND IN HILL POSITION

FLAT

SURFACE (GAS FIRST BEFORE THE CLUTCH)

1.With the engine running, press the clutch pedal down all the way down ,then
select first gear.
2. Then gently apply a little gas to increased the engine speed up to 1500 rpm or
2000 rpm and hold it perfectly still.
3. Gently release the clutch pedal up to the biting point, till it generate movement
and hold it still. As it move wait about a meter or 2 meters before you release the
clutch simultaneously to generate speed. The apply gas.

DOWNHILL

POSITION (RELEASE THE BRAKE PEDAL)

Let the car roll down till it generate a momentum about a meter or two meters
before releasing the clutch pedal in full released. Use the force of gravity. Then
supply gas.

UPHILL

POSITION (HALF CLUTCH BEFORE THE GAS)

1. With the engine running, released the clutch pedal till you hear the vibration
sound of the engine and hold it perfectly still, just a seconds

2. , then apply a little gas up to 1500 or 2000 rpm in the rev counter and hold it
perfectly still.
3. Then released the clutch pedal a thick of a coin to build a momentum and
wait about a meter or two meters before simultaneously release the clutch
pedal. Then apply gas.

HOW TO STOP THE CAR?

NOTE: THERE ARE THREE WAYS TO STOP THE CAR IN MOTION. (DEPENDS ON THE
SPEED).
FIRST WAY: WHEN MOVING FAST SPEED.
BRAKE FIRST BEFORE THE CLUTCH,
MEANING, REDUCE THE SPEED WHEN FAST MOVING, BEFORE DEPRESSING
THE CLUTCH DOWN.
SECOND WAY: WHEN SLOW MOVING SPEED.
CLUCH FIRST BEFORE THE BRAKE PEDAL,
MEANING, PRESS THE CLUTCH FIRST BEFORE THE BRAKE PEDAL.
THIRD WAY: SUDDEN STOP
CLUTCH AND BRAKE AT THE SAME TIME.
