Dear 5th grade families,

You will find the information regarding two projects attached one for math and one for science. I
want to make sure that you are aware of the assignments your child is receiving, and that you have the
full picture of what is required. While both of these are sizeable projects, I want to make it clear that
students will have 45 minutes EVERY DAY (thats 10 hours of work time!) between now and the due
dates to work on these assignments. If they manage their time well and come to class prepared to work
each day, they should have plenty of time to complete this work in the classroom!
I am asking that you please review these assignments with your student, and help them to make a plan
on the attached CALENDAR so that they can see how to best manage their time each day. Then, please
sign below and return this page to me so that I know you are aware of the projects and the expectations
for your students work.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Althoff

these assignments by the due dates listed.

Units 5 & 6 Math Project

Area and Ratios
Due Date: December 19, 2016
Directions:
1. Design your dream home! Create a blue print of your home, showing all of the rooms you
would include (at least 10 rooms). You must use rectangles, triangles, composite figures, and
parallelograms to shape the rooms. Be sure to label each room with its purpose (ex: bedroom,
bathroom, game room, basketball court).
2. Find the area of each room in your dream home. Clearly show your work and neatly organize
your answers.
3. Write at least 5 ratios to compare rooms in your dream home. 3 ratios need to compare two
quantities; 2 ratios need to compare three quantities. (This is from Unit 6, so you may not be
able to complete it until closer to the due date).
4. Be ready to present your dream home with a brief (2-3 minutes) explanation on December 19th!

How will it be graded?
