Elements of a Story
Grade: 2nd Grade
Group Size: Whole Group and Individual
Subject: Reading, Reading Comprehension
Standard: (2)3.1 analyze simple elements of a story such as setting,
characters, and plot
I. Objective
To learn the Elements of a Story, consisting of the 5 Ws; the Who, What,
When, Where, and Why of a story; enhancing comprehension skills.
This lesson can be taught between two days.
A. Effectively master the knowledge of the elements of a story and
enhance comprehension skills.
B. Demonstrate the knowledge of the elements of a story by using
comprehension skills
C. Effectively knowing how to answer the 5 Ws of a story.
II. Materials Needed to Accomplish Objective
Little Red Riding Hood Text, Goldilocks and the Three Bears Text, Writing
tools, Blank copay paper, Coloring tools (markers, color pencils)
III. Procedures for the Lesson
A. Today's lesson will involve asking questions about a story: Who?
What? When? Where? Why?
1. Start off by reading Little Red Riding Hood Text as an entire
class. By doing this, students who have special needs or trouble
reading will also get to hear the story.
2. Review with students what the elements of a story are (5
Ws), but do not have them answer the questions about the story
yet.
a. WHO- Who are the characters? Who is the narrator?
b. WHAT- What are the characters doing? What happened
in the story?
c. WHEN- When did the story take place? In the day or
night? Summer, Winter, Fall Spring? Past or Future?
d. WHERE- Where did the event take place? Where did the
characters live?
e. WHY- Why did this event happen?
3. Draw out mind map on the board. Have a middle bubble (for
the story title), and five bubbles connecting to the middle (one
for each: who, what, when, where, and why).
4. Start asking students the 5 W questions (seen in number 2 of
Procedures) for Little Red Riding Hood, to see if they can answer

them. Make sure to write their answers under each title of the
connecting bubbles.
5. Next, read Goldilocks and the Three Bears as a class.
6. Have students create their own mind map of the 5 Ws
relating to Goldilocks and the Three Bears on a blank piece of
paper that you will provide. Encourage students to color their
mind maps to make them look fun. (Draw Characters, Scenes
from the story, etc.)
a. For special needs student with cognitive disabilities,
allow yourself be present, to assist with any questions.
Assessment
A. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of this lesson by
creating a mind map of the elements of the story by using the 5 Ws in
a mind map for Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
1. This will allow us to evaluate students reading levels, and
capacity to learn and understand what they have read.
