Activity Design Plan

Activity Objective:
Students will comprehend the texts of William Shakespeare by reviewing the historical
background and specific vocabulary related to the time.
Description of Activity:
The Jeopardy board will be projected on the SMARTBoard from the website
https://www.superteachertools.us/jeopardyx/jeopardy-review-game.php?
gamefile=564232#.WCyZmPkrKyI. Students will be split into three groups where they will work
with their teams to answer questions and win candy. Each team will have a team leader that will
buzz in for the team. Each question has a corresponding point value that will be awarded to the
team that answers the question correctly. The person who answers on the team will rotate
alphabetically after each question, starting with the letter z. Each time a person answers
correctly - they will win a piece of candy. The winning team will also get a piece of candy. Once
all the questions are gone, the members from the team with the most points will win a Golden
Ticket. The Golden Ticket can be used for 10 points on any homework assignment, quiz, or
test.
Motivation:
The extrinsic motivation will be candy and the Golden Ticket, which the students will
receive every time they answer a question correctly. A basket full of candy will be placed on a
table in the front of the room for students to take when they add their points to their team point
chart.
The intrinsic motivation will be the practice the students will receive identifying
vocabulary and the historical background information regarding the time of Shakespeare.
Students will also be more prepared for the Shakespearian exam, which covers all the material
from the Shakespeare Unit.
Directions:
1. Students will be grouped by the teacher by grabbing a numbered card as they walk into class
(Card will have a 1, 2 or 3 on it).
2. Students will sit in a group with their team.
3. Students will have a team leader that rotates alphabetically after every question.
4. The team leader from the team who answered correctly will pick the next question from the
SMARTBoard.
5. Students will have 20 seconds to discuss the question with their group and have the team
leader provide an answer.
6. If the answer is correct, the person who answers will get a piece of candy, if the answer is
incorrect, the question will be answered by the team who buzzes in first.
7. Once all the questions are answered, the team with the most points will win another piece of
candy and a Golden Ticket.
8. Notes may not be used.

Check for Understanding:

1. How will students be grouped?
2. Where will students sit?
3. How will students determine who is the team leader?
4. Who will pick the question?
5. How long with the students have to discuss and answer the question?
6. Who gets a piece of candy when the question is answered correctly?
7. What does the winning team win?
8. Can you use your notes?
Active Participation:
If one team answers the question incorrectly, it will then be opened up to the other teams to
answer. Thus, it would benefit the group to have an answered prepared, in case the other team
is incorrect. This will encourage all groups to pay attention and participate in trying to answer
the questions at all times. Students will also be encouraged to take notes throughout the game,
because the questions are similar to what they will be seeing on an upcoming quiz or test.
Transition times will be minimized through the use of a timer. The timer will ensure that teams
are only given 20 seconds to come up with an answer to the question on the board. The
students will also be put into groups randomly by the teacher at the beginning of class, so that
time is not wasted later on.
Expectations of Students Behavior:
All students will be expected to participate, help their team come up with answers, as well as
take notes on the various questions and answers. Students will remain quiet when a team is
answering, and only one person will speak at a time. Students will be supportive and respectful
of one another, even when a wrong answer is given. Students will also be expected to maintain
a quiet- moderate noise level when deliberating with groups. If student deliberation becomes too
loud, they will be reminded by the teacher to keep the volume level down. Students will also
treat the buzzers with care, and be responsible to throw away any trash from the candy they are
given.
Materials/Resources Needed:
1. Numbered slips for putting students into groups
2. SmartBoard
3. Internet access to participate in the Jeopardy game
4. Candy for correct answers
5. Golden Tickets
6. Buzzers
7. Paper and writing utensils for note taking
8. Timer
Modeling:
The teacher will model the activity by giving team one a practice question. If the team answers
the question correctly, the teacher will congratulate them, and then ask the students to practice

going through the process of how they would behave if a wrong answer is given as well. After all
students are on the same page, the game will begin.
