as ever as the carpenter s ham mer has the same
strength when his arm is too weak to use it
The spirit is weak at night because its forces have

during the day that it cannot call them together
E very thought is one of these forces and a part of

THE

ART OF STUDY

T HERE is a n art o f stud y

We were t o ld in
youth to study We were never told properly h o w

mitting to m emory words sentences and rules is not
getting ideas It is simp l y m emori z ing It i s si m

mind which learns to remember sounds
If you
commit to memory a great many words and se nten ces
you are simply o verstraining a part or functi o n Of
your mind You are putting oni t a b urden t o carry
A S if you gave every tack i n your carpet a name and
thought it your duty to remember every tack by i t s
name would y ou h ave tim e o r strengt h to think of
much else
Words are not ideas The y a re only the signs b y
mean s of which through the senses of sight or sound
a printed word or a spoken word may represent an
idea to a mind A word or senten ce full of meanin g
or thought to one p erson may m ean nothing t o
another
