PART A: Describe how students could create and publish an original movie, audio file, podcast, or
vodcast in order to achieve required
learning standards.
Challenge: TEMPLATE
For an A provide an idea where
MULTI-MEDIA
AUTHORING
the learning activity reaches a LoTi level 4a or above. To do this you will have to design a project where
students engage in higher-order thinking and publish their work to an audience that will use or care about
the results. Broad feedback for their work is also a great way to boost interest and performance.
Grade Level: 3

Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: SS3H2 The student will
discuss the lives of Americans who expanded peoples rights and freedoms in a
democracy.
a. Paul Revere (independence), Frederick Douglass (civil rights), Susan B. Anthony
(womens rights), Mary McLeod Bethune (education), Franklin D. Roosevelt
(New Deal and World War II), Eleanor Roosevelt (United Nations and human
rights), Thurgood Marshall (civil rights), Lyndon B. Johnson (Great Society and
voting rights), and Csar Chvez (workers rights).
The movie example covers Susan B. Anthony.
Brief Description of Learning Experience: As you address the standards, what
will students and teachers do? How will the project be introduced? How long will it
take to complete? What audience will use/care about the multimedia projects
students are creating? How broad is this audience? How will student work be
assessed and by whom? Who will provide feedback to students about their work?
(Overview should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs)
Students will create their own movie on Movie Maker with guidance from peers and the instructor. From
the standard, the student will choose an activist and create a movie complete with music retrieved from the
Free Music Archive website. Students will caption at least five of the pictures with a fun fact and a
connection from their life to the life of the activist. Throughout this process, the teacher will assist students
in using Movie Maker and adding the music. The project will be introduced as a summative assessment at
the end of a unit lesson plan covering all activists in the standard. We will post our movies onto the class
website and invite the rest of the third grade along with parents and administration for a movie day to watch
their short films. A guest speaker will be invited to share with the class about current events. The students
will receive feedback from the instructor and from parents and administration after watching the movies.
The instructors feedback will be individually for each student while other feedback is given as a class. The
instructor will assess the students based on a rubric created for the project.
Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: What LoTi level would this lesson
be and Why?
This lesson would be LoTi level 4 or 5 as students take on adult and professional roles. Their work will be
seen by outside sources and influenced by a special guest speaker. This will make learning meaningful for
the students as their technology is shared and valued.
Importance of technology: Why is using a multimedia authoring tools critical to
the project? Could the project be completed without this technology? What would be
lost without using it? What other types of technology, if any, are going to be used in
the learning experience?
This project could be accomplished without Movie Maker, however students would
lose the opportunity to learn technological skill sets and lose the ability to research
and create something that is their own. They could search pictures and print them
out and make a poster board, but this would take the authenticity of learning away.
