Genre Project Reflection
When I first began this project, I did research about our humanity and why we
dehumanize others. I struggled with finding an argument and corresponding audience that would
work for me. I then became interested in how a uniform could dehumanize a worker and that led
me to the Stanford prison experiment. Finally, I settled on the topic of prison reform. I am
arguing for prison reform by proving I decided that the most effective audience would be
Millennial voters as they are capable of creating change, the biggest generation and young
enough to be open to new opinions.
My first genre piece is a mock certificate for Hillary Clinton. I decided to use this format
to show my audience what Hillary Clinton could achieve regarding the criminal justice system,
using arguments directly from her political site. By using a digital image of an award, the piece
could be shared through social media. I also chose this format with my audience in mind;
millennials live in a fast-paced society that uses social media very often- the image is simple
enough to read quickly but shares enough information about her plans for reforming the criminal
justice system.
My second genre piece is an infographic that contains statistics about the mass
incarceration in the United States. Similar to my first genre piece, I believe that while on social
media, users are more likely to view an image rather than a text post. Therefore, I decided to put

the information in an infographic that allows for easy viewing. By keeping the amount of words
to a minimum, the information is very quickly acquired.
I appealed to my audiences logos by using statistical information for my argument. I
appealed to my audiences pathos by framing criminal justice reforms as an achievement and by
displaying those achievements as an award. I appealed to my audiences ethos by including a
link to Hillary Clintons official site and her official logo to give my genre piece the appearance
of a political ad.
I believe my kairos is appropriate with current events as election day is very soon and
prison and criminal justice reform is a relatively popular topic, due to media exposure. My
particular audience, millennial voters, needed a quick way of accessing information through their
usual mode of acquiring information which I believe is social media. By using relatively simple
images to spread on social media, I believe my genre pieces would be successful in conveying
information.
