Understand what editing is.
Understand the procedure for proof reading and peer editing.
Identify errors of grammar, punctuation and spelling within
simple text.

Lesson

Introduction:
Present the guiding question How can we edit our writing? or What
are the different techniques/ways to edit our writing?
Allow time for the students to respond to the question as a class,
through discussion.
Write down students ideas on the SmartBoard to validate their answers.
Then present the lessons topic: Editing through proof reading, first
individually and later on, in pairs.
Write down the definition of Editing, Proof Reading, and Peer Editing
on the SmartBoard.
Then, state the purpose of this lesson: to provide students with at least
two editing techniques to help them review their descriptive writing
pieces related to their Show and Tell project.
Stress the importance of proofreading and editing all assignments,
including in their daily lives (letters, e-mails, cards, jobs, etc.)
Development:
With the help of the prepared PowerPoint presentation, the students will
play a guessing game, whereby they will correct the descriptive
sentence, and guess who/what is being described.
The students will be given instructions to read and look for errors in
punctuation, spelling and grammar, and finish by guessing.
Tell students to take out a colored pen/pencil for corrections.
Two students will hand out the stencil to the entire class, so that they
can complete the sentences, and follow along during the lesson.
The powerpoint will begin.
Each sentence will be read aloud by the teacher and/or selected
students.
After each sentence has been read aloud, the class will be given a
moment to individually review the sentence which was just read.
Then, the whole class will correct the sentences errors together and
guess who/what the description is describing.
Students are expected to write down the corrected sentences on their
stencil handout.
