Many units share commen external features, but differ internallyGeneral information |_tmmobitizers ‘Transponder © The transponder [4] Fig. 100479 consists of a resonator and IC cuit which includes a processor and non-volatle memory, embedded into the ignition key (5] or remote transmit. » A separate power supply is not required as the transponder derives Rs power from an induced signal, al the correc frequency, emitted by the antenna ring [3] from the immobilzer contol module (2) «When the resonator circuit receives a signal tthe correct frequency it generates sufficient power to tenable the IC circuit and processor to operate and to transmit its identification code. '» Each transponder ignition key or remote transmiter has a unique code out of a possibilty of milions of combinations, Antenna ring © The antenna ring [3] isa collod wire (acral) located around the ignition lock assembly. It has ‘wo functions, the first being to transmit a carior frequency signal, usually in the 100-150 kHz ‘ange, fom the immobilizer control module to the transponder, The Second is to transmit the entfication code ofthe transponder back to the Immobilizer contol module Immobilizer control module ‘© The immobitzer contro! module [2] can be a stand-alone component or its function can be integrated into cther control modules. it communicates with the antenna ring {3} around the ignition switch and the engine control module (ECM) ( ‘¢ When the ignition switch is turned to the ON positon, a cartier frequency signal is sent tothe ‘antenna ring around the ignition lack assembly, ‘Some systoms have the ability to adjust the frequency ofthis signal, up or down, to ensure trouble-free communication without interference from other signals, 22 | General information Engine control module (ECM) © The engine control module (ECM) (1) needs special sofware designed forimmoblizer system ‘operation. To enhance security and prevent components from being swapped from another Vehicle, the immobilizer control module will only be able to communicate with the ECM that it recognizes and is registered with it from nev. ‘System operation ‘© When the igntion is switched on [7] and an attempt made to start the engine the ECM sends an unlock request [3] tothe immoblizer contol module (2) © The immobilizer control module outputs a 100-150 ki4z cater wave [9] to the antenna rin, ‘This signal i induced inte the transponder [1], ‘The transponder responds to this induced signal by outputing the key code identification 1} which 's transmitted back tothe immoblizer contol ‘module [12] via the antenna ring. This key code identfication is then compared with th stored code in the immbiizer contol module memory. At this point the immobilizer contol ‘madule only recognizes this as one of a series of ragistored keys. To furher increase secur, the Immobilizer control module transmits a random code to the ECM [14] and the key transponder [13] and requests an algorithmic calculation to be performed. The immobilzer control module also performs this algorithmic calculation Independent ‘* The ECM and key transponder retum the answers cof the aigorthmic calculation tothe immobilzor contzol module [18] & [16]. A comparison is made and if they match, the unlock request [17] is granted, ‘If any ofthe caloulations do not match the unlock request is denied, the engine will not start o,f already stated, wil stop. Some bright lights, particularly fuorescent tubes, can reduce the operational range considerably. ‘When tho transiitir handset is aimed towards the receiver and operated a coded signal is transmitted which matches the code inthe receiver decoder. This coded signal can consist ‘of a 32-bit binary code, which can allow for upto 4 millon separate diferent combinations, «On recognizing the correct code, the racalvar decoder transmits the required lock or unlock signal to the cerita locking contol module and also a signal tothe alarm system control module i fite. Radio frequency * The radiofrequency system is broadly similar in ‘peraton tothe infrared or ultrasound system but with the added advantage that it functions over greater distances, 100-150 feet fs quite normal, {nd does not have to comply wit te line-of-sight requirement ofthe previous type.
