Lesson #2. Chapter 5. 7th Geography. Tri Valley

Homework Packet
Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics
Students should not have anything crazy going on today. There is one child on an
IEP and on for a 504 plan- when we are reading out loud they may have some small
difficulty with certain words and the reading level of the textbook if they require
help you can help them (usually not necessary)
A. The Lesson

1. Introduction

Ask the students why they think geographers split the country up into different
regions? Do we even know what these regions are? (West, South, Midwest,
Northeast) Tell them that each region is vastly different and it is a good way to
separate different parts of the country and group them with similar places and
states. Even though they are all so much different in 2009 there was snow fall
recorded in all of the 50 states.
Hand out homework packets
2. Content Delivery (Body of the lesson plan)

Have the students read out loud have them pick who wants to read, they
should be following along answering questions in their packet.

Start with the Northeast region talk about landforms, climate and vegetation
and what makes this part so unique to the rest of the country.
o

Appalachians- discuss that although the book says its the highest
point east of the rockies this would actually be Harney Peak in the
Black Hills

The Black Hills dont look so great and big because there is very
little relief- discuss what relief is

Discuss the lifestyle in the Northeast

Why would tourism be so huge in the fall there? - Trees change colors
and very beautiful time of the year

Move to the Midwest- you can skim through most of this considering that this
where we live

Talk about how it is one of the largest lowlands in the world.

Discuss the great lakes- Lake Superior largest freshwater lake in the world.

Discuss the Mississippi river and how it is so important for the entire Midwest
and in general the country

Lesson #2. Chapter 5. 7th Geography. Tri Valley

It is navigable therefore you can come in from the Gulf of Mexico

all the way into the heartland.

Discuss the 100th meridian and how it separates the United

States in half

Show class an aerial photo of the Midwest- show that it looks like
a checkerboard- why is that?

Discuss the lifestyle in Midwest- farming

Discuss the South on landmarks climate and vegetation

o

Hot and humid

Discuss
that tip of Florida is only continental united states location
in the tropics- what other place is? Hawaii

Life in the south

Discuss how the south has changed drastically due to A/C

The West
o

Talk about how ridiculous it is to place all of these states into one
region with AZ, HI, WA, AK all in the same exact region is so dumb.

Mention Mt. McKinley largest mountain in North America (Denali)

(20,310)

Talk about Redwoods

Mention that you could name just about any type of climate and you
would not be wrong in the west.

Talk about how lifestyles drastically vary throughout the west as well
farming, high tech, logging, have it all.

3. Closure

Ask the children to write down on a scratch piece of paper and answer why
geographers divide things into different regions? Let them know that every section
in this chapter is just like this one, which is jam packed full of information and that it
is important to stay caught up in their homework packet.
