Ferdinand E.

Marcos
Ferdinand Edralin Marcos, the sixth president of the third Philippine Republic,
was born on September 11, 1917 in Sarrat Ilocos Norte. His parents, Josefa Edralin and
Mariano Marcos, were both teachers from important families. He was baptized into
the Philippine Independent Church. Marcos's real father was not Mariano but a wealthy
Chinese man named Ferdinand Chua. Thereby making him a half-Chinese by blood.
He was married to Imelda Romualdez-Marcos, on May 1, 1954 and the marriage
produced three children.

Education
Marcos studied law at the University of the Philippines, attending the
prestigious College of Law. He excelled in both curricular and extra-curricular activities,
becoming a valuable member of the university's swimming, boxing, and wrestling
teams. He was also an accomplished and prolific orator, debater, and writer for the
student newspaper. He also became a member of the University of the
Philippines ROTC Unit (UP Vanguard Fraternity). He sat for the 1939 Bar Examinations,
receiving a near-perfect score and graduating cum laude, had he not been in jail for 27
days, he would have graduated magna cum laude.
At a young age, he was arrested as suspect of the murderof Julio Nalundasan,
the political rival of his father. He appealed to the Court and won his cases.

House of Representatives & Senate


It was in1948 when he was accepted as technical assistant to the president and
in the same year he ran for congress. He became the youngest member of the house of
representative; he was reelected two times, and he ran for senator. But all these
successes were not enough for the young lawmaker. He had the voice in the senate
that was summed up by his election as senate president.

Presidency
1. First Term

In 1965, under the Nacionalista Party he ran and became


president, defeating Macapagal in an overwhelming result.

Achievements under his Administration


The signing of investment Incentive Act of 1967.
The Declaration Act which the local government heads could

appoint office heads.


The Philippine became member of ASEAN.
Stabilization of government finance by means of more
effective collection of taxes, imposing new laws and getting
loans from foreign banks and governments.
Greater production of rice by promoting the cultivation of
miracle rice, the construction of more irrigation systems, and
giving financial and technical assistance to the farmers.
Building of small roads and bridges, schoolhouses, and
public works. The Philippine National Railways was also
improved to foster land transportation.
Intensive drive against smuggling, crime syndicates, and
communist New Peoples Army ( NPA).
Holding the Manila Summit Conference on October 24-25,
1966, attended by the heads of state of Australia, South
Korea, New Zealand, Philippines, South Vietnam, Thailand
and United States.

Problems During his Administration


Lacked of funds for basic services including education,
health, national defense, social welfare and infrastructure.
2. Second Term
- After his first term as President he ran for reelection and he won.
In 1969, Marcos was reelected for a second termthe first Filipino president to
win a second term

Achievements under his Administration


The Philippine became one of the founding countries of the
Associarion of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in
1967.
Martial Law Period where crime rate decreased after curfew
house was implemented.

Problems During his Administration


Prices of basic commodities increased

A lot of citizens became and the value of peso declined


Prevalence of dirty politics
Rampant graft and corruption
Increasing gap between the rich and poor
The ineffective of some provisions
And ineffective of peace and order (Crime, communism,
subversion)
The GDP decreased from 3.5% to 1.4%
Foreign Debt increased
Rise of NPA and Studenr Activism

In 1986 through the EDSA people power he was outsted from the Philppines and took
refuse in Hawaii. He died in September 28,1989.
