Day Four Reflection
The fourth day of clinical hours had a special project take place in which the students
participated in a community event by painting on pumpkins for the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival.
Pumpkins were donated to the class by local farms and students acknowledged this kind gesture
by writing on a collaborative thank you card. On the pumpkins, students painted pointillist
images by using Q-tips. The students worked both collaboratively and independently to fill the
surface of their pumpkins. During this lesson, Illinois Professional Teaching Standards 6 and 9
were implemented.
Standard 6- Instructional Delivery states that the competent teacher understands and
uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students development of critical thinking,
problem-solving, and performance skills. (IPTS) To create a pointillism painting on the
pumpkin, the students learned through trial and error how much paint was needed on their Q-tips
to have control over their application of paint. Students both learned this through their own trials
and by observing demonstrations. The Knowledge Indicators Section 6B. of this standard
supports this idea by stating that the competent teacher understands principles and techniques,
along with advantages and limitations, associated with various instructional strategies. (IPTS)
The Performance Indicators Section 6H. states that the competent teacher monitors and adjusts
strategies in response to learners feedback (IPTS) and was applied throughout the lesson as I
walked around and spent time with the students as they created their art.
Standard 9- Collaborative Relationships states that the competent teacher understands
the role of the community in education and develops and maintains collaborative relationships
with colleagues, parents/guardians, and the community to support students learning and wellbeing (IPTS) and this was applied in the lesson by having donations from local farmers, having
the students respond to their kindness through a written card, teaching the importance of working

together as a community, being part of a community event that promotes working together, and
inviting parents and guardians to attend the festival to see the work that their child created in
their smaller classroom community. The Performance Indicators Section 9M. further supports
this in stating that the competent teacher identifies and uses community resources to enhance
students learning and to provide opportunities for students to explore career opportunities.
(IPTS)
Students were thrilled to participate in Sycamore Pumpkin Festival and enjoyed having
opportunities to create pointillism both independently and collaboratively. They were engaged
while creating their art as well as while they were learning about the pointillism technique and
the history of the festival.
