The news article that I read about is titled, Nyack School District Is
'Building Bridges' For Today's Students to Cross into Tomorrow's
World". It was published on September 1, 2016, and was published in the Rockland County Times. This article features an update on the Nyack school district, as it prepares for the upcoming school year, and all the changes it is making in order to better prepare its students for the real world. According to Superintendent Dr. James J. Montesano, students need to be able to think critically, be adaptable, and "venture outside the lines". Montesano's school district is supporting its teachers in becoming "bridge-builders" for student-centered classrooms, shifting the culture of instruction. The district introduced a new logo, including the term "Building Bridges", and is centered around the 7 C's of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, content mastery, communication, compassion and cultural awareness. For the K-12 Social Sciences program for example, they are shifting from teaching facts, to teaching concepts and content knowledge. Their second shift is teacher from disseminator to teacher as facilitator of investigations. Their third shift is from textbookfocused instruction to students learning to read, and from students learning content knowledge to students integrating and applying concepts, skills and content knowledge. In order to fund these changes, the district is assisted by the Foundation to Inspire Excellence in Nyack Schools, Inc., which helped by raising $33,000 in March to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related educational programs. The title of the book that I found related to my major, was The English Teacher's Survival Guide: Ready-to-Use Techniques and Materials for Grades 7-12. This book was published March 1, 2011, and was published by John Wiley & Sons. This book provides problem-solving techniques for all aspects of an English teacher's job. It includes tested techniques and materials to assist both the new and experienced English teachers. It covers many different areas, such as different phrases of their jobs from lesson planning to disciplinary techniques. The book includes 175 easyto-understand strategies, lessons, checklists, and forms for effective classroom management. It provides examples of how to practice the art of teaching English effectively, and how to reduce time on labor intensive tasks. This book also reveals how to work effectively with parents, colleagues, substitute teachers, administrators, and community resources. If you were to buy the second-edition of this book, you would receive additional information on technology in the classroom, advice for working with reluctant teachers, and sample teaching units.
