Four of the six elected were women as HirShabelle and South West
State continued to make efforts to meet the 30 percent gender rule
as required by the Federal Indirect Electoral Implementation Team
(FIEIT).
The three women elected in Jowhar are Dahabo Suusow, Mina
Hassan Shibis and Farhiya Mohamed Dagane. In Baidoa, Haniifa
Mohamed Ibrahim was declared the winner in an all-female contest
after garnering the highest number of votes.
Two male candidates, one of them a former Minister of Interior and
Federal Affairs, Abdullahi Godah Barre, were also elected in Jowhar.
The election of the five representatives, in the latest round of voting,
brings the number of MPs elected in HirShabelle state to 31, leaving
only six seats to be filled.
We had 11 seats to fill and today we have voted for five. We now
have only six seats left. We hope to end the exercise well, Osman
Bareey, the State Indirect Electoral Implementation Team (SIEIT)
Jowhar Spokesperson explained.
MP-elect Suusow pledged to serve all Somalis, saying she will be a
servant of the electorate and not a leader.
I am your servant, not your leader. I want you to work with me.
There is a lot of work for us to do. I will do my best to ensure service
delivery. I thank you all; those who voted for me and those who did
not she said.
MP-elect Barre hailed those who took part in the electoral process,
expressing it as free and fair.
I thank the delegates who sacrificed a lot to vote in todays
process. I thank the electoral teams and those who organized this
election. I also thank fellow candidates who contested against me
and have shown tolerance. They deserve to be praised, they
competed fairly and respectfully MP-elect Barre stated.
In Baidoa, MP-elect Haniifa also thanked the electorate for electing
her and promised to push for womens rights mainly in healthcare.
South West women have no adequate health care. There is no
single maternity hospital in Baidoa let alone other areas in South
West. Women have a right to accessible health care. I will direct my
effort in this area, Ms. Haniifa added.
SIEIT Baidoa Deputy Chairman, Sid Ali Abukar Baafo, observed that
South West State was close to achieving the 30 percent gender
quota, following the election of Ms. Haniifa
Today, we voted for one of the seats in Baidoa. It was an all-female
seat, bringing the total number of women so far elected to 13. We
are gradually edging towards achieving the set quota for women,
which is part of the 69 seats allocated, Mr. Baafo said.
South West State has so far filled 66 seats out of the 69 allocated.
The three seats remaining are expected to be filled in the next few
days.
