An extraordinary debut novel that heralds a remarkable new talent: set in 1970s
New York, featuring a cast of characters: a brother and sister who are estranged heirs to
one of the citys largest fortunes; two suburban teenagers seduced by downtown New
Yorks punk scene; an obsessive magazine reporter and his idealistic neighbor; and the
detective trying to gure out what any of them have to do with a shooting in Central
Park. These characters intertwine in ways that are unexpected and unforgettable.

MYCROFT HOLMES
By
Dear Book-Buyers,
I was frst introduced to Conan Doyles beloved detective through old movies starring Basil
Rathbone, though Jeremy Brett is still my favorite Holmes. Ten, as an NBA rookie for the
Milwaukee Bucks, I was given a set of Sherlock Holmes stories for my frst road trip, and I
was hooked. Id even fnd myself using Holmess power of observation to enhance my own
game and exploit weaknesses in my opponents.
Later in my career, the ofce of my estate planner, attorney Leslie Klinger, was a shrine to
Holmes. Since then, Klinger has penned the stunning two-volume Te New Annotated
Sherlock Holmes (which Ive read cover to cover and made good use of in this new
adventure of Mycrof Holmes).
So why Mycrof and not Sherlock?
My afection for the older brother began when I read Enter the Lion: A Posthumous
Memoir of Mycrof Holmes. I realized more could be done with this older, smarter
character and his window onto the highest levels of British governmentat a time
when Britain was the most powerful country in the world.
But Conan Doyle described Mycrof as an overweight curmudgeon who rarely liked
to move or even speak. (He co-founded Te Diogenes Club, where one of the tenets
of membership was no talking!) And while I wanted to stay true to the authors
character and to make good use of Mycrof Holmess superior mind, I also wanted
a story of twists and intrigue. So my co-writer and I envisioned Mycrof as a goodlooking 20-something, flled with life and energy and ridiculous smarts, who just
happened upon his frst adventure...one that would plant the seeds of tragedies and
heartbreak that would eventually turn him into a semi-recluse.
Now my love afair with Holmes has come full circle: that frst rookie road trip
culminated in a stay at Vacation Village in San Diego, which is where we made
the deal last year to pen this story of Mycrof Holmes.
Tis experience has been deeply rewarding for me. From the time I was in
grammar school, teachers encouraged me to write. I was an English and history
major at UCLA. And though Ive penned nine books, including childrens stories,
two autobiographies and several historical subjects, this is my frst novel.
I sincerely hope youll join me in enjoying a fresh look at Sherlock Holmess
older, smarter brother!
Best Wishes
