ACADEMIC ROTATION CURRICULUM

DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS
UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS SCHOOL OF MEDICINE WICHITA
RATIONALE
This is a one-month elective rotation in academic development. The rotation may be completed during
the second, third, or fourth years of residency to fulfill one of the elective rotations required during
residency training. It is intended for residents who are interested in developing their skills in leadership,
education and research, and especially those interested in pursuing an academic career or subspecialty
training. Teaching and supervision are provided by two full-time faculty pediatricians and the
departmental research director.
FORMAT
The resident will be given the opportunity to choose two of three areas (leadership, education, and
research) to focus on and will complete 5 of the assignments listed in the syllabus from each of those
areas. Night call outside of assigned inpatient call is not expected. Expectations include the review of
provided material, participation in required activities and completion of assignments by the end of the
rotation.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this rotation is to expose residents to the basic characteristics and skills of leaders,
educators and researchers and to provide opportunities for them to develop and use their skills in those
areas.
Leadership
Describe what a leader is and characteristics of a good leader
Identify characteristics of an effective mentee and mentor
Outline the academic tracks of an academic physician
Identify personal strengths
Describe tools for difficult conversations
Education
Discuss principles of effective feedback
Prepare a PowerPoint presentation that is interactive and engaging
Use Microskills to teach learners at the bedside
Lead a discussion group/teach a group of students to perform procedures
Analyze the health literacy level of a handout in clinic
Describe principles of effective family-centered rounds
Research
Refine a research question
Conduct a literature review and identify components
Identify and compare research designs
Identify elements of a research protocol
Discuss need for IRB review
Converse in statistical terminology (types of data, central tendency, descriptive, inferential,
association)
Discuss elements of and design a research poster
Complete identified goals on individual research projects
MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE

The resident will be expected to:


Initiate a discussion with faculty attendings at the beginning of the rotation to address learning
objectives
Identify areas for improvement in knowledge, including seeking feedback from attendings on
relevant topics and questions
Read assigned material and course syllabus and access all available information including text
books, journal articles, and internet resources, etc.
Describe the different academic tracks of an academic physician
Develop familiarity with the components of literature reviews, IRB proposals, different research
designs, and statistical terminology.
PRACTICE-BASED LEARNING AND IMPROVEMENT
The resident will be expected to:
Extract information from the literature and give a brief presentation on selected topics of
interest to enhance self-education and that of resident peers
Give lectures to students and residents
Evaluate and critique published research
Complete a data analysis utilizing own research project or provided data and apply advanced
statistics as appropriate
Utilize and contribute to the teaching syllabus as a learning source for independent learning and
for the benefit of future residents on the rotation
Describe principles of family centered rounds
Complete an evaluation of the rotation
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS AND COMMUNICATION
The resident will be expected to:
Identify their personal strengths and describe ways to work with people with different
strengths
Develop the skills needed to lead a difficult conversation
Provide effective feedback to learners
Establish a working relationship with faculty, other residents, medical students, and patients and
their families
Use appropriate etiquette, language and grammar in both written and verbal communication
Communicate effectively and frequently with rotation faculty
Incorporate principles of effective mentoring, feedback, and bedside education into professional
practice
Identify characteristics that make a good leader
PROFESSIONALISM
The resident will be expected to:
Demonstrate professionalism by completing professional activities with excellence
Be available and prompt for all required meetings and activities
Be professional in manner and appearance throughout the rotation
Be trustworthy and responsible in fulfilling the requirements of the rotation Meet with faculty
mentors for this rotation at least twice during the block
SYSTEMS-BASED PRACTICE
The resident will be expected to:
Participate in professional development opportunities through KUSM-W
Advocate for resources that communicate clearly to patients with low health literacy
Effectively educate families with low health literacy

Discuss the history of medical education and how that impacts medical education today

EVALUATION
Residents performance will be evaluated by the faculty leaders of the rotation using a competencybased rotation specific global evaluation in New Innovations. Evaluation will be based upon completion
of assignments as well as the presentations completed during the rotation.
