In case of this mechanical seal is operated in explosion area (group II, 2G) an appropriate
additional operating manual, following EC directives 94/9/EC (ATEX 100a), has to be
observed by all means! If required this could be ordered at BURGMANN.

GENERAL SAFETY NOTES

Any person being involved in assembly,


disassembly, start up, operation and maintenance
of the BURGMANN Mechanical Seal must have
read and understood this Operating Manual and
in particular the safety notes. We recommend the
user to have this confirmed.

BURGMANN
Mechanical
Seals
are
manufactured on a high quality level (quality
management EN ISO 9001: 2000) and they keep
a high working reliability. Yet, if they are not
operated within their intended purpose or
handled inexpertly by untrained personnel they
may cause risks.
The user is asked to check as part of his
security program what effects a failure of the
mechanical seal might have on the environment
and what additional safety measures have to be
taken to prevent personal injury.
The pump has to be put up in such a way that
seal leakage can be led off and disposed properly
and that any personal injury caused by spurting
product in the event of a seal failure is avoided.
Any operation mode that affects the operational
safety of the mechanical seal is not permitted.
BURGMANN mechanical seals must be operated,
maintained or repaired by authorised, trained
and instructed personnel only.
Any work to be done on the mechanical seal is
only permitted when the seal is neither
operating nor pressurised.
The responsibilities for the respective jobs to be
done have to be determined clearly and observed
in order to prevent unclear competencies from the
point of safety.

those for the prevention of accidents have to


be observed.

Product pressure and sliding speed

Unauthorised modifications or alterations which


affect the operational safety of the mechanical
seal are not permitted.

PRODUCT INFORMATION


The CARTEX mechanical seal concept has been specially developed


for pumps and applications in refineries and petrochemicals plants.
At the heart of the CARTEX are tried and tested elements, such as
the rotating seat, which have been in successful service for years. Be
it for retrofits, initial equipping or the conversion of pumps
previously equipped with stuffing box packings, the CARTEX is
ideal for standardisation projects due to the wide range of
applications for which it can be used.
The data given are for the seal. The pump data have to be observed in
addition by all means.

All technical information given in this manual is based on the results


of extensive testing and on BURGMANN's many years of practical
experience. However, in view of the great diversity of possible
applications the technical data can only be taken as being of
approximate nature.
We can only guarantee the safe and efficient functioning of
mechanical seals in individual cases if we have been
comprehensively informed of the operating conditions to which they
will be subject, and if this has been confirmed in a separate
agreement. In case of doubt BURGMANN has to be consulted
before start up.
We reserve the right to carry out modifications, even if they have
not yet been considered in this manual.

Operation under several limit values simultaneously should be
avoided as higher loads (pressure, temperature, speed) can increase
wear or lead to damage of sliding faces or elastomers . This could
result in a shorter service life and in the risk of a sudden seal failure
endangering men and environment.

DESIGNATED USE

This mechanical seal is exclusively designed for the use in the


specified application. A different utilisation or a utilisation going
beyond the specification is considered contrary to its designated
use and excludes a liability by the manufacturer.
Operation under conditions lying outside those limits stated in
paragraph operating limits is considered contrary to its
designated use.
Should the seal be operated under different conditions or at a
different application BURGMANN has to be asked for recognition
as safe in advance.

The area of the seal gap should be wetted by the medium to be sealed
at every phases of operation.
CARTEX-SO
External accessories (quench, flushing, circulation) are not required
if the seal is operated duly.
CARTEX-SE / CARTEX-QE
For a safe operation of the mechanical seal we recommend to apply
the most suitable type of circulation described in API 610 / 682.
This protects the seal cavity from deposition of solids.

Operation with barrier pressure (pressurised supply fluid)


In the double-acting mode of operation a barrier pressure system
is required (API, plan 53 / 54) (both seals are pressurised).
Forced fluid circulation by means of a pumping device in the
seal when the shaft rotates.

Operation with pressureless supply fluid


According to the operating conditions in the tandem mode of
operation the supply fluid is arranged either as "dead-end
quench" (API, plan 51) or as circulation quench (API, plan 52)
(product-side seal is externally pressurised).
Forced fluid circulation by means of a pumping device in the
seal when the shaft rotates.

TRANSPORT


If not specified differently by contract the BURGMANN standard


packing is used which is suitable for dry transport by truck, train or
plane. The warning signs and notes on the packing must be observed.

EMISSIONS

A mechanical seal is a dynamic seal that cannot be free of leakage


due to physical and technical reasons. Seal design, manufacture
tolerances, operating conditions, running quality of the machine, etc.
mainly define the leakage value. In fact, compared to other sealing
systems (e.g. packings) there is few leakage.
A possibly increased leakage during start-up will decrease to a
normal quantity after the running-in period of the sliding faces.
If this is not the case or if there are other malfunctions the
mechanical seal has to be shut down, removed and checked for
reasons of safety.
Leakage of mechanical seal at outboard side has to be drained and
disposed properly.
Components which may get in contact with the leakage
have to be corrosion-resistant or have to be adequately
protected.

Notes for income inspection:


Check packaging for visible damages.
Open packaging carefully. Do not damage or lose parts supplied
separately.
Check if consignment is complete (delivery note). Inform the
supplier immediately in writing if parts are damaged or missing.
Inboard side of the mechanical seal has to be protected from damage
during transport and storage. The transport case in which the seal is
supplied is well suited for this purpose and should be kept for a
possible return transport.

BURGMANN mechanical seals are super finished and tested


machine elements for which special conditions before and during the
storage period have to be followed.
For the stock keeping of elastomers special conditions are required.
For all rubber-elastic parts the rules of ISO 2230-1973 (E) are valid.
For reasons of safety BURGMANN recommend to replace the stock
in store after 3 years at the latest.
Sliding materials and elastomers are subject to material-specific and
time-based alterations (distortion, ageing) which might reduce the
full efficiency of the seals. Yet, this may be avoided by observing the
storage instructions.
Storage in the original packing lying on a flat surface.

DANGER !

If solvents have been specified for use as supply




fluid these media are subject to the regulations for hazardous


substances as they are detrimental to health and in addition highly
inflammable. The regulations for handling hazardous substances
(safety data sheets according to DIN 52900) as well as those for the
prevention of accidents must be followed.

STORAGE

Protect the seal from


direct exposure to heat (sun, heating)
ultraviolet light (arc welding, halogen or fluorescent lamps,
sunlight)
presence or development of ozone (arc welding, mercury vapour
lamps, high-voltage devices, electric motors)
risk of embrittlement of elastomeric materials

Check the packaging periodically for damages.

Operation with barrier pressure (pressurised supply fluid)


ATTENTION !

If the barrier pressure falls below the pressure

in the pump the medium to be sealed may penetrate through the


seal gap, contaminating the barrier fluid. A regular control of the
barrier pressure and change of the barrier fluid is recommended.


Operation with pressureless supply fluid


ATTENTION !

Plastic sheet packagings with humidity indicators have to be checked


every 8 weeks. The check has to be recorded.

Due to the overpressure in the stuffing box the

medium to be sealed may penetrate through the sealing gap of the


inboard seal into the buffer fluid which will consequently be
contaminated. For plan 52 BURGMANN recommend a regular
control and exchange of the buffer fluid.

Packings exceeding 50 % rel. humidity values have to be sent to


the manufacturer or the nearest service centre for inspection and
new packaging.
After a storage period of approx. 2 to 3 years of cartridge seals:
Check for operational tightness by the user
In case of high leakage due to natural distortion:
refinishing of the sliding faces in professional procedure at a
BURGMANN-Service centre or a well equipped workshop at
the user's.
replacing of all elastomeric parts for reasons of safety
Damages caused by improper storage may not be claimed on the
BURGMANN company with reference to their warranty.
These instructions apply to all BURGMANN mechanical seals which
have been supplied and stored in their undamaged original packing ,
as well as to seals which have been installed in a component of a
plant (e.g. pump, compressor, agitator etc.) but have not yet been put
into operation.

A preservation of the BURGMANN mechanical seals is not


necessary.
Do not use any anticorrosives!
Risk of deposits and possibly chemical attack of the elastomer
secondary sealing elements.

CARTEX-DE:
Determine the direction of shaft rotation. Select the correct
connections of the seal version in accordance with the
instructions "INTEGRATED PUMP DEVICE" in the
drawing.

Check in case of a preservation of complete plants with


mechanical seals installed:
the compatibility of the chosen preservation agent with the seal
materials and with the elastomers
no impairment of the seals axial movability by conglutination
or by gumming

The mechanical seal has to be installed very carefully and under the
cleanest conditions.

Do never force during installation.


O-rings in sliding contact with other parts when mounting the
mechanical seal may be lubricated very thinly, if not described
otherwise.
Elastomers made of EP-rubber must never come into contact
with lubricants on the base of mineral oil (swelling,
decomposition).
Lubricant for elastomers (o-rings etc.) recommended by
BURGMANN:

The order of assembly to install the mechanical seal into the pump
depends on the design of the pump and should advisably be
determined by the pump manufacturer.
Attention!

When installing the seal any kind of impact force on

it must be avoided by all means.

PRELIMINARIES


Possible installation order:

Unpack the seal and place on the work bench.

following working steps have been completely terminated.

Make sure that all sealing elements are installed which contact
the surrounding machine parts.

Check the parts of the machine for:

Check, if the o-ring in the shaft sleeve is installed.

Insert flat gasket into the cover.


If necessary, glue it with grease.

ATTENTION!

The seal should remain packed until the

Feed the complete seal cartridge onto the shaft and align it to the
shaft.
Avoid bumping the seal cartridge against the shaft or shaft steps
as the brittle ceramic components break easily.

Check at the machine:


damage of connecting surfaces to the M.S.
mating dimensions, rectangularity and concentricity to the shaft
axis.
Run-out accuracy of the shaft (acc. to DIN ISO 5199):
Shaft diameters up to 50mm: max. 0.05 mm
Shaft diameters 50mm - 100 mm: max. 0.08 mm
Shaft diameters exceeding 100mm: max. 0.10 mm
CARTEX-DE:
Determine the direction of shaft rotation. Select the correct
supply connections.

Bolt the cover of the M.S. to the pump housing.

Crosswise tighten the accessible set screws firmly to the shaft.


Degrease the set screws and secure with 1 drop each of liquid
screw retention, e.g. Loctite 243.

Prepare the place of assembly, take away any not required tool,
cuttings, dirty cleaning wool etc.
Cover the work bench with clean, non-fibrous cardboard.

The shaft surface over which the mechanical seal is to be fed may be
thinly lubricated with water, alcohol or silicon grease. Elastomers
made of EP-rubber must never come into contact with lubricants
on the base of mineral oil (swelling, decomposition).

Observe the supply connection and align it according to the


drawing/seal.
CARTEX-DE:
When attaching the seal cartridge to the pump housing care has
to be taken that the supply connections at the M.S. are positioned
in accordance with the instruction "INTEGRATED PUMP
DEVICE" on the drawing.

ATTENTION!

Remove the colour-marked assembly fixture.

Turn the pump shaft carefully by hand and tighten the other set
screws firmly to the shaft step by step.

Remove the remaining assembly fixtures.


Keep the assembly fixtures by all means for a later removal of
the seal.

Turn the pump shaft carefully once by hand.


The shaft should turn steadily.

INSTALLATION

The mechanical seal is supplied as a precisely set cartridge unit,


premounted at works, and does not require any adjustment during
installation.
For installation the assembly drawing of mechanical seal has to be on
hand.
For installation the table of dimension has to be on hand.

Set screws with cup point must be used only

Further assembly of the machine in accordance with the


instructions of the machine manufacturer.

Remove the plastic protection caps from the supply and disposal
connections after installation.

SUPPLY CONNECTIONS

The supply connections are designed as female threaded NPT


connections in accordance with ANSI B1.20.1.
The connections are marked on the mechanical seal and must not
be interchanged during installation.


ATTENTION

Sealing agents for threads (PTFE-tape, etc.)

PROCESS AGENTS


Supply fluid according to operating requirements, preferably light


oil, demineralised water or steam-condensate.
For supply fluid preferably such media should be used only
which are compatible with the product medium and may leak out
to atmosphere at outboard side of seal without risk for staff and
environment.

When screwed connections are opened take care by all means that
sealing agents cannot enter the seal.
Supply piping:
Use pipes of stainless steel.
Clean the piping thoroughly before connecting to the seal.
Fasten all pipe connections pressure-sealed.
Additionally note for the supply fluid circuit:
Install the pipes continuously rising, as short and as
convenient as possible for the flow to ensure self-venting.
Avoid air inclusions and provide for venting connections, if
necessary.
For turns use pipe bends
For shut off use ball valves
Fasten the pipes after approx. 2 m distance with elastic pipe
clips
Follow the operating manual of the supply system
Close unused supply connections pressure-tight with threaded
plugs.
CARTEX-DE:
Assignment of the connections for vertical arrangement of the
connections:

TEST RUN


Safety checks before start up

Assignment of connections has to be in accordance with the
shaft rotation (see instructions "INTEGRATED PUMP
DEVICE" in the drawing)
The mechanical seal must never turn dry. The seal cartridge must
be filled with liquid to avoid the risk of a dry-run and consequently
a damage of the sliding faces.
When the shaft turns the filled-in liquid warms up due to
frictional heat produced by the sliding faces. An unpermitted
pressure increase due to this temperature rise must be avoided.


Damages due to dry-running are excluded from the warranty.


ATTENTION!

For this purpose open plug.

Circulation of the buffer fluid is only assured

when the shaft rotates. At standstill the seal cannot be cooled


because the fluid does not circulate. This can result in damages
caused by excessive heating!
ATTENTION!

Set screws with cup point must be used only

once. Repeated fastening endangers the safety of force transmission.


Therefore:
Replace set screws by new set screws.

Assignment of the connections for horizontal arrangement of the


connections:

times with the pump being at standstill.

Start the quench circulation.

Operation with barrier pressure (pressurised supply fluid)


In the double-acting mode of operation a barrier pressure system
is required (API, plan 53 / 54) (both seals are pressurised).

Flood mechanical seal and barrier circuit with clean liquid


(particles size 50 m) and vent thoroughly.
To avoid dry run at the sliding faces the barrier circuit has to be
thoroughly vented a few times during start up.
In case of vertical arrangement:
To ensure a complete venting of the M.S. carefully push down
the outboard seal face with a suitable tool through the hole in
cover.


For a single mechanical seal the pressure in the seal chamber


(stuffing box pressure) should always be higher than the ambient
pressure at the pump. Otherwise the pump will suck in air via the
sliding faces, which will result in dry-running and consequent
failure of the mechanical seal.
CARTEX-QE
As CARTEX-SO / CARTEX-SE, but in addition

Quench medium should flow through the mechanical seal.

CARTEX-DE:
ATTENTION!

Make sure that the barrier fluid may circulate unimpeded.


Forced fluid circulation by means of a pumping device in the
seal when the shaft rotates.

Circulation of the buffer fluid is only assured

when the shaft rotates. At standstill the seal cannot be cooled


because the fluid does not circulate. This can result in damages
caused by excessive heating!


First the barrier pressure has to be set, then the mechanical seal
can be put into operation.


Operation with barrier pressure (pressurised supply fluid)


The barrier pressure must exceed the pressure to be sealed during
every state of operation.

Adjust the barrier pressure:


at least 2 bar above the highest pressure to be sealed at the
inboard seal
at pressures >20 barg: approx. 10 % of the pressure are
sensible (accuracy of indication)
at a constant level (appropriate for the outboard seal faces)
Observe the max. barrier pressure (p3).

Temperature of barrier fluid at OUTLET port of the


mechanical seal should be at least 40 C below the boiling point at
normal pressure.

Operation with pressureless supply fluid

in the pump the medium to be sealed may penetrate through the


seal gap, contaminating the barrier fluid. A regular control of the
barrier pressure and change of the barrier fluid is recommended.

According to the operating conditions in the tandem mode of


operation the supply fluid is arranged either as "dead-end
quench" (API, plan 51) or as circulation quench (API, plan 52)
(product-side seal is externally pressurised).
API, plan 52:

ATTENTION !

Operation with pressureless supply fluid


Max. temperature of the supply fluid 40C below its boiling
temperature at normal pressure, measured as the outlet of the
mechanical seal.

Fill supply circuit and mechanical seal with fluid and vent
thoroughly.
To avoid dry run at the sliding faces the supply circuit has to be
thoroughly vented a few times during start up.
In case of vertical arrangement:
To ensure a complete venting of the M.S. carefully push down
the outboard seal face with a suitable tool through the hole in
cover.


ATTENTION !

SAFE OPERATION

The mechanical seal has to be constantly wetted by the product in


its liquid form, in particular when the pump is started or stopped.
The pump design has to be such as to take this necessity into
consideration (e. g. heating of the product).
Damages due to dry-running are excluded from the warranty.
If the medium to be pumped builds deposits or tends to solidify
during cooling down or standstill of the machine the stuffing box has
to be flushed with suitable clean liquid. Flow and liquid to be
determined by the user.
If the operation limit values and the instructions given in this manual
are observed a trouble-free operation of the mechanical seal can be
expected.

Due to the overpressure in the stuffing box the

medium to be sealed may penetrate through the sealing gap of the


inboard seal into the buffer fluid which will consequently be
contaminated. For plan 52 BURGMANN recommend a regular
control and exchange of the buffer fluid.

WORKERS PROTECTION


Make sure that the buffer fluid may circulate unimpeded.


Forced fluid circulation by means of a pumping device in the
seal when the shaft rotates.

If the barrier pressure falls below the pressure

Mechanical seals are often used for sealing hazardous substances


(chemicals, medical substances etc.). The valid regulations for
handling hazardous substances have to be observed by all means.
Medium may splash out if the seal fails. Personal injury may be
prevented by the user providing for splash protection and wearing
safety goggles. Care has to be taken by the user for proper disposal
of the leakage.
The user is asked to check as part of his security program what
effects a failure of the mechanical seal might have on the
environment and what additional safety measures have to be taken
to prevent personal injury.

MAINTENANCE

The correctly operated mechanical seal needs low maintenance.


Wear parts, however, have to be replaced, if necessary.
An inspection of the mechanical seal should be carried out during a
revision of the complete plant. We recommend to have this
inspection be performed by authorised BURGMANN personnel.
If the seal cartridge is removed during a planned maintenance period
an unopened cartridge can be reinstalled. If however the cartridge
has been opened it has to be checked by the manufacturer and, if
necessary, reconditioned.

Try to define the kind of failure and record it.


In case of failure due to high leakage the amount of leakage should
be observed. Changes of the operating conditions have to be
recorded. In case of an unacceptable temperature rise the mechanical
seal must be shut down for reasons of safety.

A damage of the mechanical seal is indicated by a continuous,


flowing leakage.
If there is a malfunction which you cannot correct on your own, or
if the cause of malfunction is not clearly recognisable please
immediately contact the nearest BURGMANN agency, a
BURGMANN service centre or the BURGMANN headquarters.
During the warranty period the mechanical seal must only be
disassembled or removed with BURGMANN's approval or when a
BURGMANN representative is present.

BURGMANN's customer service department offers a comprehensive


service package covering consultancy, engineering, installation,
standardisation, commissioning as well as damage analysis right
through to seminars on sealing technology.
Addresses are listed in the known BURGMANN Design Manuals as
well as in various other BURGMANN brochures.

RECONDITIONING

If repair is necessary, the complete seal should be sent to the


manufacturer, as this is the best way to find out which components
can be reconditioned or which parts must be replaced.
If, for compelling reasons, a repair has to be carried out on site
(e.g. no. spare seal on stock, long transport, problems with customs)
the seal may be repaired in a clean room by trained personnel of the
operating company under the instruction of BURGMANN
maintenance personnel.

REMOVAL

Shut down the pump in duly procedure, let it cool down and
depressurise it
No product should contact the mechanical seal
drain the
pump, if necessary!
Secure the pump against inadvertent start!
Observe the safety notes (safety data sheets)!


If the medium to be pumped builds deposits or tends to solidify


during cooling down or standstill of the machine the stuffing box has
to be flushed with suitable clean liquid. Flow and liquid to be
determined by the user.
Mechanical seal cartridges should possibly not be disassembled or
extremely cleaned during or after removal so that the damages and
their causes may be correctly analysed by qualified personnel of
the manufacturer or the user.
Follow the valid regulations for preventing accidents when
disassembling mechanical seals as well as those for handling
hazardous substances if the seals have been already in operation. In
case of doubt the necessary information has to be obtained before
starting repair.
Any work to be done on the mechanical seal is only permitted
when the seal is neither operating nor pressurised.
The order of disassembly to remove the mechanical seal out of the
pump depends on the design of the pump and has to be determined
by the pump manufacturer.

Depressurise and shut off (or drain) the supply system.

Drain the mechanical seal. Collect the drained liquid and dispose
it properly.

Remove the supply piping from the mechanical seal. Collect


drained liquid and dispose it properly.

Insert the assembly fixtures into the groove of the cover and
fasten them.

Screw out the cup pointed set screws and dispose.


ATTENTION!

Set screws with cup point must be used only

once. Repeated fastening endangers the safety of force transmission.

Loosen all screw connections between seal cartridge and the


respective machine parts.

Remove the seal in the reverse sequence as described for


assembly (set up).

DISPOSAL


Usually, the BURGMANN mechanical seals can be easily disposed


after a thorough cleaning.
Metal parts (steels, stainless steels, non-ferrous heavy metals)
divided into the different groups belong to scrap metal waste.
Synthetic materials/plastics (elastomers, PTFE) belong to special
waste.
ATTENTION! Material containing fluorine must not be burnt.
Some of the synthetic materials, divided into the different groups
can be recycled.
Ceramic materials (synthetic carbons, ceramics, carbides) belong
to waste products. They can be separated from their housing
materials, as are physiologically recognised as safe.
