Johnnie Boden left his job as a City banker in 1991 and

made a new career plan while sitting at his West

London kitchen table. Since then, his clothing
company has grown from a small mail-order
operation to an extremely successful online business.
The Boden brand which is well known for wellpriced, classically-styled clothes for both business and
casual occasions has just passed 200 million in sales
for the first time. This is a real achievement at a time
when many businesses have failed because of the poor
economy. It helps that the rich, famous, and powerful
wear his clothes and say positive things about the
brand.
Boden, who is 49 and has three children, set up the
business after he left his unhappy job at a City
investment bank. When he was in New York, on a
business trip for the bank, he had the idea for a

Being an optimist isnt as positive as you think. Just
because you look on the bright side of life doesnt

well. I dont think I create the problems by keeping
them in mind: they are already there. I just think I
have a better chance of avoiding problems when I can
see them. In short, if youre too optimistic about
where youre going, its likely that you havent
thought enough about the journey there.
To be successful, we can look at the attitude of some of
the worlds most successful business people. One
characteristic of such people is their ability to be
honest about every situation. When they have a
problem in business, they can see clearly what is
wrong, and they dont hide from making difficult
decisions. When they are honest about a problem, they
can solve it effectively.
We can all benefit from their experience. For example,
if you spend more money than you earn, its not a
good time to be optimistic about your situation. Dont

definitely not a pessimist, though. I prefer to do my
best and look at everything with open eyes.He has
some advice for those of us who always believe the
best will eventually happen: Be a dreamer, just dont
get lost in your imagination.

My husband booked a trip to the Dominican Republic,

a beautiful country in the Caribbean, to celebrate our
wedding anniversary. Everything on the flight was
uneventful, but when we were leaving the plane,
something blew into my eye.
It was quite painful, but I waited until we arrived at
our hotel to look at it. When we got to our luxury
suite, I immediately washed my eye with water.
However, the next morning it wasnt any better it
was red and painful and I couldnt see anything from
that eye.
We went down to the hotel lobby and the receptionist
sent us to an eye doctor in Santo Domingo. The doctor
cleaned my eye very carefully and gave me some
eyewash to use. It was quite painful for the next two
days but it finally returned to normal and I started to
enjoy my holiday.
The third day of our holiday started well. The weather
was beautiful and we stayed on the beach all day. We
were having a great time. But that night, just as we
were going to sleep, I felt something touch my leg. My
husband said it was nothing. Then something touched
his foot, too, and he asked if it was me. But it wasnt!
He turned on the light and we saw a small snake at
the bottom of the bed. It went into the bathroom and
my husband quickly closed the bathroom door and
called reception to tell them. Several minutes later,
someone from the hotel arrived at our door. The man
went into the bathroom, caught the snake, and called
the cleaning staff to clean the bathroom.
It wasnt a very nice experience, but the hotel staff
were really helpful, and the manager gave us a free
dinner and a larger room for the rest of our stay. And
we didnt see any more snakes!
