Abstract

This paper outlines a professional development plan for ongoing professional growth of a singlesubject teacher at the secondary level in the area of physical education. Professional goals related
to the content area and mission of the employment site are included, as well as activities that will
lead to progress toward or achievement of the goals. The activities are outlined in a 5-year plan.
The paper concludes with a reflection on the rationale for the activities and the artifacts included
in the Professional Development Quest Portfolio (PDQP) for the appropriate Teaching
Performance Expectations (TPE) Domain.

A PDQP is useful for showing the growth of a teacher of the course of her career, but it is
also a learning tool by which to gauge potential growth and to guide progress toward the
achievement of professional goals. Furthermore, the PDQP fosters self-assessment, evaluation,
and reflection that should lead to insightful change of behavior toward the improvement of
instruction and the increased probability of learning (Constantino & De Lorenzo, 2009, p. 56).
For myself as part of the requirements for TED 690, this reflection has led to the development of
professional goals and the selection of activities which will lead to the accomplishment of the
goals, organized in a 5-year professional development plan. This plan is supported by the
requirements of my content area, the mission of my current place of employment, and the
selection of artifacts for TPE Domain F of my PDQP (Commission on Teacher Credentialing,
2013).
I am in my third year teaching high school dance and health at Inspire School of Arts and
Sciences, a public charter, and credential in PE with subject authorization in drama/theatre was
granted the past September. All of my professional goals and related activities align with the
mission of the school, my own educational philosophy, and/or advances in my content area,
especially in regard to 21st Century skills. My overarching goal as an educator in my field(s) of
physical education, dance, theatre, and health, is to raise up students who as contributing
members of society understand and appreciate the value of these non-core subjects. I also wish to
train creative performing artists who are well-rounded and well-versed in the physical, mental,
emotional, social health implications of their craft. The activities that I have selected for my 5year professional development plan will give me the tools needed to accomplish these things.
All of the activities I have in my plan with lead to specific achievement, certification, or
credential, that will indicate professional skill in that area. After completing my Master of

Education degree in Best Practices, I will be adding certification in Health Sciences to my

credential at request of the school administration and governing board, so that I can continue
teaching health courses in the coming years. From there, I will be pursuing a Career Technical
Education (CTE) Credential in Arts, Media, and Entertainment (AME), as the school has
received a CTE grant, so that I am qualified under the grant to teach courses in that industry
sector (California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, 2016). After I am credentialed in
Health Sciences and CTE/AME, I will complete the Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment
(BTSA)/Clear Credential program through either Butte County Office of Education or the online
program at San Diego State University (Butte County Office of Education, 2016; San Diego
State University, n.d.). By that time, my initial credentialing will be completed and I will focus
my professional development on my area of specialization, which is dance. I would like to apply
for a professional development scholarship from the National Dance Education Organization and
attend its annual conference (National Dance Education Organization, 2016). Finally, I would
like either to apply and enroll in a Masters or Ph.D. program for Dance Education or
Choreography, or to pursue additional certification in Dance on my credential. All of these
professional development activities are outlined in the following table as my 5-Year Professional
Development Plan:

My 5-Year Professional Development Plan is not only supported by the requirements of

my content area and the mission and goals of my current teaching site, but it is also upheld by the
artifacts that I have selected to include in my PDQP for Domain F. Artifact #1 is my 5-Year
Professional Development Plan itself. Artifact #2 is evidence of the in-house, faculty led
professional development and collaboration amongst my colleagues at my place of employment,
indicating that I am well aware of the overall mission of the school and my place in it. Artifact #3
is evidence of my attendance at this years CTE/AME conference, which supports my goal to be
credentialed to those standards and practices. Artifact #4 is a literature review on two editorials
that discuss professional development for physical education teachers, which demonstrates
continued commitment to growth in the primary subject area of my credential.
Teachers understand the value of lifelong learning. While reflection on professional
growth that has already occurred is an essential component of a PDQP, the inclusion of a 5-year
plan demonstrates the teachers commitment to continued professional growth in the beginning
stages of her career (Constantino & De Lorenzo, 2009, p. 90). The activities that I have laid out
in my 5-Year Professional Development Plan-supported by the artifacts in Domain F of my
PDQP-will improve my standing at my current place of employment and increase my

marketability as a professional educator should the opportunity for advancement arise. They will
also increase my depth of knowledge and my understanding of pedagogical practices in my
content area(s) and help me better serve students in developing needed skills in the field and in
life.
