Product description

Table of contents
This brochure will provide both the
beginner and expert with an overview of actuator controls, in particular the AUMA MATIC. It is based on
the knowledge imparted in the product descriptions Electric multi-turn
actuators or Electric part-turn
actuators
For simple automation tasks where
basically OPEN - CLOSE control of
the valves is required, the AUMA
MATIC is still the most cost effective
solution.
Further requirements can be met
using the micro controller based
AUMATIC. These are:
adaptive positioning,
non-intrusive setting,
PID control,
logging of operating data,
diagnostic functions,
fieldbus interface.
The features of the AUMATIC are
described in a separate brochure.

Actuator controls AUMA MATIC

AUMA actuator controls are usually
mounted directly on the actuator.
If access to the actuator is difficult,
the AUMA MATIC can be mounted
separately from the actuator on a
wall bracket. Further applications:
The wall bracket solution prevents
the electronics from being exposed
to extreme conditions, e.g. high
temperatures.

External controls (A)

For actuators to be connected to
external controls, the following must
be considered:
All actuator signals, e.g. the
torque, limit and thermoswitch signals, must be passed on to the external controls in the control cabinet.
The control of the actuators via a
reversing contactor combination
has to be implemented and installed in the control cabinet.
The local controls have to be implemented and mounted.

Integral controls (B)

Actuators with integral controls are
supplied ready for use with local controls and switching elements.
The information from the limit, torque
and thermoswitch is processed
locally. This results in the following
simplified systems:
No extensive wiring in a control
cabinet is required.
Reliable and correct processing of
the actuator signals assures the
immediate reaction of the controls
and prevents excessive torques
from building up in the valve.
Actuator and controls are ideally
adjusted to each other.
Standard wiring diagrams are
available.

I>

Integral controls/
Fieldbus )
If the actuator controls are integrated
in a fieldbus system, then the installation costs are further reduced. The
commands and signals of all actuators (slaves) are transmitted to and
from the master via a two-wire cable
or via optical fibres.
The space consuming input/ output
boards, as well as their associate
control cabinet sections, are no
longer required.

Equipment/ Functions
Parallel interface
The usual way to connect the field
devices with the higher level controls
is parallel control. A separate signal
wire is required for each signal to be
transmitted. All signal wires are connected to the AUMA plug/ socket
connector (see page 15).
All discrete commands and signals
are transmitted with a 24 V DC level
(optionally 115 V AC); continuous
signals such as set points, with a
0/4 20 mA current level.

With fieldbus control, the information
between master and field devices of
all connected devices are transmitted via a two-wire cable or fibre
optics.

The AUMA MATIC with fieldbus

interface can be controlled via:

Equipment/ Functions
OPEN - STOP - CLOSE control
The actuators can be controlled by
the control station and at the local
controls with the commands OPEN STOP - CLOSE (self-retaining) or
OPEN - CLOSE (push-to run operation). The selection for operation in
the push-to-run or self-retaining
mode can be programmed independently for REMOTE and LOCAL
control within the controls.
With push-to-run operation the actuator continues to run as long as a run
command from the control system or
the local controls is available. If the
control mode is programmed to
self-retaining, the actuator will drive
to the defined end position upon

In this case, the controls are

equipped with an integral positioner
which automatically positions the
valve in accordance with the externally supplied nominal value.

Three-position modulating duty

The integral positioner is a
three-position controller. It registers
and compares the nominal and the
actual position value. The actuator
motor then runs in direction OPEN or
CLOSE, subject to the deviation
detected. The modulating behaviour
is stabilised by determining dead
bands.

Fieldbus

By setting the dead time, the number

of starts and therefore the wear of
valve and actuator can be reduced.
The dead time is the time after a
change in the nominal value; other
changes in the nominal value are
ignored by the controllers to filter
major fluctuations within the nominal
value.

The following signals are available:

Collective fault signal

The collective fault signal will be activated if one of the following events
occurs:

Positioner
If the AUMA MATIC is equipped with
a positioner instead of a standard
interface, only the collective fault signal is available.

Torque fault, i.e. the torque

switching was tripped in an intermediate position
Motor protection tripped, i.e. the
motor is overheated
Loss of phase
Parallel to the collective fault signal
the actuator will immediately be
switched off.

End position signals or the feedback

signal of the selector switch position
can be implemented via tandem limit
switches in the actuator or via a
selector switch with additional signal
contacts (second level).

It is possible to exclude the torque

fault from the collective fault signal.
This is recommended if the torque
signal is passed on separately to the
control station via additional contacts in the actuator.

Signals for fieldbus interface

Controls with parallel interface
require separate wiring for each
command and each feedback signal.
In practice this limits the number of
signals which can be transmitted.
Due to the serial transmission of all
information via a single cable,
fieldbus systems are not bound by
this limitation.

Design principle
1

Electrical connection

The connections for motor and control cables are made on a 50-pole
AUMA plug/ socket connector.
If the plug/ socket is disconnected for maintenance work, the wiring remains undisturbed.
The explosion-proof actuator controls type
AMExC is provided with a special plug/
socket connector for explosion-proof actuators as a standard.

If the controls is equipped with a fieldbus

interface, the plug housing contains a
fieldbus connection board.
Further information on page 11.

Switchgear

In the standard version reversing

contactors are used for motor power
switching.
The lifetime guaranteed by the manufacturer
amounts to 2 million cycles. If a higher number of cycles is to be expected, non-wearing
thyristor units should be used. This is an
advantage for modulating actuators where a
large number of operations and short
response times may be required. Thyristor
units are available up to a max. power of
1.5 kW.

3
3

Plug/ socket connector to

the actuator

Easy mounting of the controls directly to the

actuator is possible due to the AUMA plug/
socket connector. A flameproof plug/ socket
connector is used for the explosion-proof
version. On request the controls can also be
mounted on a separate wall bracket (refer to
pages 3, 13).

10

Design principle
7

Interface

The interface forms the link to the

process control system. Here, the
commands from the process control system
are received and signals issued.
Depending on the version, parallel control
with or without positioner or fieldbus, the
AUMA MATIC is equipped with the corresponding inputs and outputs (refer to
page 7).

7
6

Logic

Power supply unit

The logic processes all external and

internal signals. The programming
switch can be used, e.g., to determine the
type of seating in the end positions, to determine whether the run commands are processed in the push-to-run operation or in the
self-retaining mode or to program the collective fault signal. In case of faults, e.g. tripping
of the motor protection, when reaching an
end position or in case of a stop command
the logic switches off the actuator directly
and without significant delay time.

For the power supply of the internal

electronics and the position transmitter (if fitted) in the actuator.

Local controls

with the push buttons OPEN, STOP,

CLOSE and the lockable selector
switch LOCAL - OFF - REMOTE. Indication
lights for the indication of the end positions
and faults are included in the basic version.
With the lockable selector switch LOCAL OFF - REMOTE, the control station is
selected.
As an option, a lockable protection cover is
available (refer to page 12).

11

Equipment/ Functions
Local controls

The AUMA MATIC is equipped with

local controls. The selector switch
LOCAL - OFF - REMOTE allows the
control mode to be set. With the push
buttons OPEN - STOP - CLOSE, the
actuator can be operated locally.
During commissioning the actuator
may be operated using the operating
elements on the local controls as
soon as power supply is connected.
Indication lights
3 indication lights show the following
actuator status:
End position CLOSED reached
(yellow)
Fault (red)
End position OPEN reached
(green)
If the actuator is equipped with a
blinker transmitter for running indication, the corresponding indication
light for the respective direction will
blink on the local controls.

12

Lockable selector switch

The selector switch LOCAL - OFF REMOTE is lockable in all three positions. Unauthorized operation at the
local controls is therefore prevented.

Protection cover (option)

By means of a lockable protection
cover the local controls can be protected against extreme climatic influences or vandalism.

Equipment/ Functions
Wall bracket
Besides the above mentioned possibility, to fit the controls directly to the
actuator, they can be mounted separately from the actuator on a wall
bracket (see page 3). This is recommended if:
limited space would restrict the
access to directly mounted controls
high ambient temperatures in the
surroundings of the actuator could
affect the electronics
heavy valve vibration could influence the controls.

Type of seating
A particular seating mode for a valve,
i.e. limit or torque seating, is performed via the type of evaluation of
the actuator signals in the actuator
controls. Independent of the end
position, the type of seating may be
programmed on the AUMA MATIC
using a DIP switch.

The AUMA MATIC will automatically

switch off the actuator after the
switch-off criteria, i.e. torque or position, have been reached.

Overload protection
If excessive torque builds up at the
valves closing element in an intermediate position, e.g. due to a
trapped object, the torque switches
will immediately trip after reaching
the set tripping torque.

The integral controls will monitor this

signal and switch off the actuator
immediately; this prevents excessive torques from building up in the
valve.

In this case, the end position signal is

missing. Contrary to torque seating
in one of the end positions, the controls will interpret the torque tripping
as a fault.

13

Equipment/ Functions
Monitoring of the motor temperature
The thermoswitches will interrupt the
control circuit as soon as a winding
temperature of 140 C is exceeded.
After cooling down to a temperature
between 120 C to 90 C the actuator
can be switched on again.

Motor temperature

Tripping point
140 C

115 C

90 C

Reset point
Time

In order to protect the motor against

overheating, thermoswitches or PTC
thermistors are embedded in the
windings of the 3-phase AC and
1-phase AC motors. When integrated into the control circuit, they
will protect the motor against damage due to excessively high winding
temperatures.

The AUMA MATIC evaluates the

thermoswitch signal and switches off
the actuator when tripped. After cooling down, the motor cannot be controlled remotely unless the fault has
been acknowledged at the local controls.
If the motor is protected by means of
PTC thermistors, an additional PTC
tripping device has to be provided
within the AUMA MATIC.

Phase failure monitoring

Automatic phase correction

If one of the phases of the voltage

supply fails, the collective fault signal
is activated and the actuator can no
longer be operated.

The automatic phase rotation correction ensures that the rotating field
is always correct for a clockwise
closing actuator. For 3-phase motors
the correct direction of rotation is
guaranteed, even if the phases are
crossed over during electrical
installation.

Behaviour in case of loss of communication

In the event of loss of nominal or
actual value signal or loss of the
entire bus communication at the
fieldbus controls, the actuator performs a pre-defined action. The following features can be programmed:

fail as is:

The actuator
switches off immediately. The valve remains in the last position reached

fail close:

Actuator drives the

valve to the end position CLOSED

fail open:

Actuator drives the

valve to the end position OPEN

fail position: Actuator drives to a

designated position

14

Thermoswitches or PTC thermistors

offer better protection than thermal
overload relays, since the temperature rise is directly measured at the
motor. Should the specification
require the use of a thermal overload
relay, the AUMA MATIC can be
equipped with the relay as an option.

Electrical connection
Electrical connection
AUMA plug/ socket connector
As a standard AUMA actuators
are equipped with AUMA
plug/ socket connector for motor and
controls.

Double sealed
(option)

The significant advantage of this

type of connection:
Once connected, the wiring remains
undisturbed, even if the actuator has
to be removed from the valve, e.g. for
maintenance purposes.

The double sealed connection is a

sealed plug and socket which is fitted
between the actuator housing and
the plug/ socket connector. Even
after removing the plug cover or if the
cable glands do not seal properly the
device will be protected against the
ingress of dust or humidity.

Explosion protection according to ATEX directive 94/9/EC
For the installation of actuators in
potentially hazardous or explosive
areas, special protective measures
are required. These are stipulated in
the European Standards EN 50 014,
50 018 and 50 019. The PTB
(Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt, the German national test

authority) as European test authority

certifies the conformity of the equipment with the mentioned standards.
The explosion-proof actuators correspond to the explosion protection
classification as shown in the table
below.

Certificates of conformity from

national test authorities in other
countries, e.g. CIS, are also available. For the current versions of the
certificates refer to the Internet

the wall bracket option described on page can also be provided for the
explosion-proof version of the actuator controls.

EU Directives
Machinery Directive
According to this directive, AUMA
actuators, actuator controls and
valve gearboxes are not complete
machines. This means that a Certificate of Conformity is not possible.
However, AUMA confirms with the
Declaration of Incorporation (on the
Internet under www.auma.com) that
during the design stage the standards
mentioned in the Machinery Directive
were applied.
By mounting the actuator to other
components (valves, pipelines etc.)
a machine within the meaning of the
Directive is formed. Before commissioning this machine a Certificate of
Conformity must be issued.

Mounting positions
AUMA actuators (with or without
integral controls) can be operated
without restriction in any mounting
position.

Functional tests
Low Voltage, Electromagnetic
Compatibility and ATEX Directive
AUMA actuator controls fulfil the
requirements, which has been
proved in extensive tests. Therefore
AUMA issued a Certificate of Conformity according to these directives
(on
the
Internet
under
www.auma.com).
CE mark
Since AUMA actuator
controls fulfil the requirements of the Low Voltage,
EMC and the ATEX Directives, the
actuators are marked with the CE
mark in accordance with the directives.

After assembly all actuators and

actuator controls are thoroughly
tested according to AUMAs inspection specification.
A final inspection record can be provided. The inspection records can be
retrieved
online
via
Internet
(www.auma.com)
