2nd Grade Mathematics - Probability and Statistics

SOL Standard: 2.17, 2.19

The student will use data from experiments to construct picture graphs, pictographs, and bar
graphs. The student will analyze data displayed in picture graphs, pictographs, and bar graphs.
WIDA Proficiency Level: 5 (Bridging)
The student will deduct the main idea and new information from described events.
The student will interpret data on a graph from oral descriptions.
Purpose: This assessment will assess the students ability to create and interpret information
from a graph. This assessment will also assess the student's ability to listen to a short story and
pull important information from it. The student will be asked questions verbally and respond
based on the graphic information.
Objectives:
Content: SWBAT create a bar graph based on a story the teacher reads to them. SWBAT
identify important information from a graph provided by verbally answering 5 questions
asked by the teacher.
Language: SWBAT listen to listen to a short story and identify the important information
in the story. SWBAT verbally answer 5 questions about a graph and generalize
information about it.
Directions: You will listen to your teacher tell a story about the favorite colors of students in
Miss Smith's class. You will listen to the story two times. As you listen to the story, fill out the
graph based on the students favorite colors. Then look at a graph of students favorite colors.
Your teacher will ask you five questions. Use the graph to answer the questions. 5 points for the
graph, 2 points for each correct response.
Test-taker hears: Miss Smiths 2nd grade class has 20 students in it. One day Miss Smith asked
the students what their favorite colors were. She asked the students to raise their hand when they
heard their favorite color. Miss Smith said, Raise your hand if your favorite color is red. Two
students raised their hands. Then, Miss Smith said, Raise your hand if your favorite color is
orange. Five students raised their hands. Then, Miss Smith said, Raise your hand if your
favorite color is yellow. Three students raised their hands. Next, Miss Smith said, Raise your
hand if your favorite color is green. One student raised her hand. Then, Miss Smith said, Raise
your hand if your favorite color is blue. Six students raised their hands. Finally, Miss Smith
said, Raise your hand if your favorite color is purple. Three students raised their hands.
