These numbers are singing in our hearts:

$28.9million (R418 million) earned in the past
year as the highest-paid female athlete, 22 Grand
Slams, seven solo Wimbledon wins, a $2.92 million
(R42.3million) payout for this latest triumph, two
Serena Slams (winning four consecutive Slams
one after the other) among other notable igures.
Serena Williams, congratulations from Grazia
SA HQ. We were cheering for you along with your
star-studded entourage! Selishly, we needed your
win as much as you did. Because in the wake of
a constant barrage of racially loaded put-downs
where youve been told youre not pretty, humble or
marketable enough, youve been unapologetically
strong, determined, beautiful, proud, excellent and
successful (read her cover story on pg 12). I know
that your winning shouldnt be weighted with the
burden of curing bigotry, but the past few weeks
have been especially hard, as weve had to keep
explaining why #BlackLivesMatter (see pg 8).
As another counter to the recordings where we
watched the senseless murders of two more black
men, some positive relief came in the form of the
girl-power video, #WhatIReallyReallyWant (turn
to pg 16). As part of a movement seeking action for
girls and women on a number of injustices across
the world, two South African musicians involved
Moneoa and Gigi Lamayne gave us all the feels.
And ICYMI, were running a reader
survey online. Visit Graziadaily.co.za to

Thousands took to the streets in
anger over the killing of two black

to 136. Days later, five police officers
were gunned down in Dallas, Texas
when Micah Johnson, a black veteran,
opened fire at a #BlackLivesMatter

A GOOD PLACE

South Africa. My regular coffeeshop waitress jabbed her inger at

my laptop screen. Her enthusiasm
was directed at a UK news feature
I was reading, about a Londonbased womens sex store that had
begun running workshops on erotic
spanking, sexual fantasies and
how to give the perfect blow job
among other titillating tuitions.
Girl clubs where participants
meet to share their fantasies with
strangers and are given the tools to
make them happen are big news
in the UK, so I wasnt surprised to
see another insert about it.
But just because local media is
a little hesitant to cover our own
sexploitations, it doesnt mean
nothings happening in our neck
of the woods. Some of the best
workshops and demos that Ive
attended, covering things like jadeegg practices, wax play and erotic
massage, have all been within 50km
of where I live.
Sex meets, workshops and
demonstrations are dotted across
the country, I told her. A good place
to start is with our local womenfriendly sex stores.

10

These stores are headed by

passionate, determined women
who have made it their mission to
provide a space where their sisters in
sexual liberation can explore their
sensual selves and get some pointers
in the sexy skills department. Apart
from being a fun night out, these
group meets are also empowering
and liberating.
Saffers arent exactly used to
talking openly about sex so for
most, the irst foray into these sorts
of girl clubs can be daunting. But
trust me, one thing will lead to
another, and soon youll be watching
someone get waxed, suspended and
massaged while you make notes
and wonder whether youd prefer
scented wax when you try it out
at home.
Nevertheless, as I type this, my
waitress bestie remains unconvinced
about our South African girl-club
offerings. Thats okay. Im attending
a Pussy Party in two weeks and
have a +1 invite. I suspect that
experience may change her mind.
And who knows? Maybe one day
soon well be calling the shots at our
next kink party, the way the women
in the UK do.

T H E U N S TO PPA B L E
Shes one of the greatest athletes of our time, having just
scored her 22nd Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon.
And with the Serena Williams effect fast sweeping the
globe, it comes as no surprise that the 34-year-old refuses
to bow down to anyone

that no
sportswoman wears as many hats
as Serena Williams. The worlds
top-earning female athlete is also
a fashion designer, philanthropist
and muse for Beyonc. Last week,
Serena made history when she
matched Stefi Grafs record of 22
Grand Slam singles titles, beating
Angelique Kerber to claim her
seventh Wimbledon crown.
As she held the Venus Rosewater
Dish after the win, Serena said, It
has been incredibly dificult not to
think about it [Stefis record]. I had
a couple of tries this year, but lost
to two great opponents [one of them
being Angelique, when she stopped
Selena from winning the Australian
Open inal]. But it makes the

victory even sweeter to know how

hard I worked for it.
Addressing the crowd with a
victorious smile, having barely
broken a sweat, Serena oozed
conidence. Her loyal legion of
fans including the Carters, Ellen
DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, Maisie
Williams and Natalie Portman
screamed from the stands, proving
that Serenas unstoppable force is not
only one to be reckoned with, but is
insanely contagious.
When she says shes worked hard,
youd better believe she means it.
OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

After her seventh Wimbledon

singles win, later that day, Serena
and her sister Venus triumphed for

the sixth time in the inal of the womens

doubles championship. In fact, Serena may
not have become the sporting great she is
today without the help of her sister who,
as she says, is her biggest rival.
It was very dificult being in shadow
of Venus, Serena, the younger sister by
15 months, said in the documentary
Venus And Serena. Venus was always in
the newspapers and media. I was never
supposed to be good; the one who was
supposed to be a good player. I was a
copycat. Thats the reason I played tennis.
Growing up in California and learning
tennis on a municipal court, Serena
believed that she could never beat her
sister. But now she has many times
catapulting her into the hall of fame. For
the record, the sisters have met in eight
major inals and Serena has won six of
them. Yet despite their healthy sibling
rivalry, Venus remains Serenas biggest fan.
Obviously we are very, very tough
competitors on the court, but once the
match is over, the second its done, you
know, were sisters, were roommates, and
were all that, Serena said.
Venus added, I am so proud of her,
14

considering how hard we have worked and

where we come from. So its a big moment
for our family.
Serenas story is one of the greatest
sporting tales of our time: she is a black
female Jehovahs Witness from Compton
who entered an arena populated almost
exclusively by white women from more
privileged backgrounds.
But she persevered in the face of racism,
injuries and illness to rewrite history. Her
Wimbledon win also comes at a time in
the US where the value of black lives has
been violently called into question. In
light of the frequent killings of so many
young black men in the US, Serena said,
I feel anyone of my colour in particular
is of concern. I do have nephews that Im
thinking, Do I have to call them and tell
them, dont go outside. If you get in your
car, it might be the last time I see you?
MIDDLE FINGERS UP

Earlier this year, Serenas uncompromising

nature and reputation for inner strength
made her the perfect poster girl for
Beyoncs song Sorry, in which the
protagonist refuses to apologise to a
cheating husband for having fun without
him. She appeared in the music video for
the track.
It happened very organically, Serena
tells Grazia. I didnt know a lot about
Lemonade but Ive known Beyonc and the
director for years. I thought I would be a
great part of the project.
However, Serena says she had no idea
the albums theme would be linked to
Jay Zs alleged affairs. I only heard my

of shooting the video, she explains. All
I knew was that I was doing something
about being a strong woman.
Serena can relate to that toughness
she admits that she learnt to grow a thick
skin thanks to years of criticism about
her body being too masculine. I am
not sorry for who I am, she says. Im not
sorry about anything. I really connected to
those lyrics and felt good about that.

IN VOGUE

Most recently, instead of focusing on her

game, viewers became more interested
in Serenas see-through top. Last year, an
article in the New York Times about female
athletes dealing with their body images
caused outrage when it othered Serena
and implied she was some sort of freak.
It read: Williams has large biceps and
a mould-breaking muscular frame, which
packs the power and athleticism that have
dominated womens tennis for years. Her
rivals could try to emulate her physique,
but most of them choose not to.
Serena remains unapologetic and its
perhaps that attitude thats made her a
subject of such interest. No matter what
is thrown at her, she proves time and
again that she is extraordinary athlete and
a beautiful woman. Its refreshing, nonconformist and hugely inspiring to women
across the globe.

So it comes as no surprise that the

likes of Beyonc and Anna Wintour are
capitalising on Serenas worldwide appeal
shes hot property.
Last year, when Serena showcased her
second collection a few months after she
featured on the cover of Vogue, Anna was
sitting FROW. Annas really been my
mentor, Serena said at the time. Some
even dubbed Anna Serenas fashion fairy
godmother and their relationship has
been strong ever since. Anna also sat in
Serenas box when she swooped in for the
semiinals at Wimbledon.
And when the tennis does end even
though Serena says she has no plans to
retire any time soon Anna will be right
there with her. The fashion guru will help
her expand her interest in fashion beyond
her current clothing line on the Home
Shopping Network (HSN) into something
more high-end.
But in the meantime, Serena promises
that theres much more to come. She
recently released a documentary, Serena,
which shows her attempt to win all four
Grand Slams last year. She managed three.
Its me telling people the hard work I
put into my career, but its also me being
myself, she tells us. People dont get
to see that. But I am different to other
tennis players. I deal with pressure, but
I also have fun. I just want people to
see the real me.

Serenas personal life is

almost as impressive as
her career. The star is
currently dating Alexis
Ohanian the co-founder
of Reddit after the pair
met in October last year.
Before that, she was
linked to rapper Drake,
but apparently kicked him
to the kerb after she found
out he was cheating on
her with Rihanna. Serena
has also previously dated
rapper Common, former
NBA player Joseph
Keyshawn, and actors
Colin Farrell, Columbus
Short and Jackie Long.
However, the most
interesting of her
relationships has been
that with her coach
Patrick Mouratoglou, who
reportedly left his wife,
Clarisse, for Serena in
2013. The pair are said to
have dated on-and-off for
two years, before Serena
started seeing Drake.
A close source reveals,
Serena fell hard for
Patrick, but shes always
been wary about mixing
work with pleasure.
Her career comes irst
and love second, and
she didnt want her
relationship with Patrick to
jeopardise that. She still
loves him, but while hes
still her coach, she knows
things between them
have to remain strictly
professional. Alexis better
hold on tight!

Canadian YouTube sensation Taylor

It couldnt have been a bigger

girls and women upfront

THERE ARENT

AS WOMEN

Global Goals campaign is only the

beginning for me.
Moneoa was equally thrilled.
Filming was tiring and hard work,
but still amazing, nonetheless.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself,
because the entire production was
so professional, and everyone was
involved and passionate about their
task. We all fed off of each others
positive and enthusiastic energy.
Id heard of Gigi and loved her
music ever since she started, but
I hadnt met her prior to the shoot.
She is so talented and such a joy to
work with.
Of course, each of the points
raised really hit home with both
Moneoa and Gigi.
Being in an industry where
misogyny is rife, I would do
anything to be able to change these
points for the betterment of those
who would like to go into the music
business, says Gigi.

Moneoa adds, Ive always felt

like there arent enough young girls
striving to help and empower one
another here at home, let alone in
the world.
Men wont be the pioneers who
bring this change about, because
most of them cant relate. We have
to ight for it as women, because
were the ones who understand the
struggle better and have the power
to establish that change. It starts
with little things like moulding
what young girls should aspire
to be. When I log in to social
networks, it breaks my heart to
see young girls aspiring to imagerelated goals.
Says Gigi, I hope the campaign
is able to start a conversation around
these issues which have aimed for
many years to break down the voices
of women around the world.

TREY SINGS
HIS WAY
INTO KHLOS
HEART
for divorce
from Lamar Odom is a minute
away from being inalised, but it
seems Khlo Kardashian still hasnt
abandoned her habit of dating bad
boys. Her latest squeeze is R&B
star Trey Songz.
It all began when Trey, 31, made
a surprise appearance at Khlos
32nd birthday party last month
at the arcade-themed restaurant
Dave & Busters in LA. Then
last week, the pair were spotted
openly making out at a Las Vegas
nightclub after Treys performance.
A source says, Shes changing her
diet no more athletes or rappers.
Treys a cutie and she thinks hes soft

because hes an R&B singer and to

her, thats really refreshing.
Its very new, but shes having
fun, another insider adds. But the
fact that Treys split in February
from his long-term girlfriend,
jewellery designer Tanaya Henry,
was said to be caused by his
cheating ways, should probably be a
red lag for Khlo.
Trey is a major lirt, an insider
claims, before adding, Khlo knows
this, but she thinks hes hot.
In the meantime, Khlos
marriage to Lamar could well be
legally over soon Lamar iled
a divorce petition of his own,
demanding Khlo cover the legal

So does this mean that Natalie will

Grazia has reported at length on

celebrity pregnancy puts

when theyre expecting. But
in a deiant move last week,
Nigerian author Chimamanda

societys ridiculous standards,
when she casually revealed
during an interview that she

she explained. I just feel

Not wanting to be reduced to just their

and author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (main)
kept their pregnancies under wraps and away
from the public eye

women are supposed to perform

pregnancy. We dont expect fathers
to perform fatherhood.
Chimamanda, one of the few
women in the world who can claim
that she once inspired Beyonc,
refused to answer any more
questions about her child. But the
point she made stuck.
At a time when the scrutiny
of womens bodies and their
roles as mothers couldnt be
greater something thats been
ampliied through celebrities
like Kim Kardashian and Chrissy
Teigen whose post-baby bodies
are critiqued constantly
Chimamandas views couldnt
be more refreshing.
For 94.7 presenter Anele
Mdoda, her words resonate deeply.
Chimamanda is an author and a
speaker, but as soon as people know
youre pregnant, that falls away,
she tells Grazia. You become the
pregnant one. Every question, every
article, every speaking engagement
will revolve around you being
with child, and not about you
as a person.
When Anele was expecting her
son Alakhe, she managed to keep
her pregnancy under wraps for
eight months before stepping out at

a public event with her burgeoning

baby bump. Like Chimamanda,
it was a conscious decision, she
explains. I didnt want to be
pregnant for other people. I wanted
to be pregnant for myself and my
son. Even our extended family were
told in the same week that the
entire country found out. I wanted
to be Anele, not pregnant Anele.
But if she falls pregnant again,
the 32-year-old says shed still
do things a little differently. I
was public for one month of my
pregnancy, and that was enough
for me to know that next time, Id
rather send pictures of their irst
birthday instead.
After the 90th person invades
your space with was it planned;
is it a boy or a girl; when are you
wanting to have another one;
natural or c-section?, you really
just regret telling anyone.
But thats not to say theres
anything wrong with screaming
the news from the rooftops,
if thats what you want to do.
Culturally, were not allowed to
announce were expecting until
were three months in, Anele says.
But thumbs up to anyone who
broadcasts the happy news on their
own terms.

I personally feel you are at the

height of your spiritual being when
you are carrying a child, so good for
you if you want to envelop yourself
in love and well-wishes, since
youre about to take on the most
important job of your life.
Anele says she also agrees with
Chimamandas sentiment that
there is a gendered imbalance
of performing pregnancy
especially when it comes to the
roles of mothers and fathers.
She explains, I feel sorry for
men to an extent. Their impending
fatherhood role is usually diluted
down to the one who gets the
snacks at 2am or the guy who has
to put up with the mood swings
in reality, the roles are a lot prettier
and uglier both ways.
When I was pregnant, I actually
cried inside a Mammas and Papas
store because picking things didnt
excite me and I was frustrated. I
didnt care for cots and wallpaper
and I actually thought it made me
a bad person. Alakhes dad loved
that stuff. He liked measuring the
items and planning.
So what can we as a society do to
stop stigmatising pregnant women
(especially female celebrities) and
their roles as mothers?
People project and generally
feel that if women dont do
something their way, it means they
are wrong, Anele says. We need
to change that mindset. It doesnt
mean were bad, it just means we
are different and thats okay.

FRIENDSHIPS CAN BE FICKLE, and
sometimes even more complicated than
relationships. And it seems that not even
celebrities are immune to those dreaded
bestie break-ups... Case in point: Rita
Ora and Cara Delevingne.
You may remember when the two
stars irst started hanging out. The
selies were endless, as were the photo
ops of them hanging out together. Rita

even claimed that she and her wifey

were so close that shed taken Cara off
the market. Then, poof! In just a matter
of months, the pairs intense friendship
was over.
According to multiple sources, they
originally fell out after Rita began dating
Calvin Harris in 2013. That same year,
Rita reportedly shouted at Cara, Sort
yourself out, youre a mess! at the
Glastonbury music festival, in front of
shocked onlookers.
An insider reveals, Cara and Rita
were inseparable for a long time, but
had a big bust-up after Rita went off with
Calvin. Cara felt very neglected and cut
Rita out, throwing herself into the party
scene. But, like all bad break-ups, time
has been a healer.
Rumours irst started circulating
that Rita and Cara had put their conlict
behind them when they were spotted
talking at the Golden Globes. And
now it seems the stars are making an
active effort to get their friendship back
on track after they were seen deep in
conversation at Glastonburys famous
nightclub, The Rabbit Hole. A friend
tells Grazia, They are rebuilding their
friendship, and Glastonbury was a
big part of that. Its been a long time
coming, but they are friends again.
With Calvin out of the picture, and
Cara having settled down with her
musician girlfriend, Annie Clark also
known as St Vincent shes been able
to forgive Rita. Insiders say that Caras
sisters, Chloe and Poppy as well as
her close friend Suki Waterhouse have
also accepted Rita back into the fold.
The conidante says, Caras been
in the studio recording her album and
Ritas just got a new deal, so theyve
been talking about music a lot. Rita can
be quite fair-weather with her affections,
but for now, at least, theyre BFFs
again. Theres a whole lot of songwriting material there, thats for sure!

TENS OF THOUSANDS of African

migrants and refugees, many under the
age of 18, go missing every year while
trying to escape to Europe. While its
been widely assumed that most had
managed to seek refuge in countries
such as Italy, there are allegations of
something even more sinister.
Atta Wehabrebi, an Eritrean human

authorities, has thrust the issue of
migrants selling their organs to secure
their passage into prominence.
Atta says migrants and refugees

Cruelly, most of the victims are
killed during the harvesting process,
especially when multiple organs are
removed. Police reports citing Atta say
that the organs are then sold illegally to
wealthy Europeans and Russians.
According to the Global Initiative
to Fight Human Traficking, this type
of trade is on the rise across the world
thanks to wealthy beneiciaries who
dont want to wait for legal donors.
Earlier this year, the bodies of nine

Thanks to Attas leads, 23 Eritreans
and Ethiopians were arrested in Rome
last week, while R8.5 million was

been acting as a front.
The United Nations Refugee Agency
recently revealed that this year more
than 230 000 people have arrived in
Europe by sea, and nearly 3 000 have
died while trying to make the journey.
However, if what Atta claims is true,
the death toll could be far higher

A QUESTION OF

justice
The six-year jail term handed
down to Oscar Pistorius
(main) incensed many, but
Mandy Wiener saw it coming

OUTRAGE ERUPTED on social

media once again last week when
High Court Judge Thokozile Masipa
ruled that, despite being convicted
of murdering his girlfriend Reeva
Steenkamp a sentence which usually
carries a minimum of 15 years behind
bars Oscar Pistorius, 29, would only
be sentenced to a six-year term.
Judge Masipa said, The life of the
accused will never be the same He
is a fallen hero who has lost his career
and been ruined inancially. He cannot
be at peace. She added that she was
of the view that a long-term prison
sentence would not serve justice as
Oscar isnt likely to reoffend.
Mandy Wiener tells Grazia, I
wasnt entirely surprised by the
verdict. In my view, it was slightly less
than I had anticipated, but it was in
line with my expectations.
As the co-author of Behind The
Door: The Oscar Pistorius And Reeva
Steenkamp Story (with Barry Bateman),
Mandy has in-depth knowledge of
this three-and-a-half-year ordeal that
began when Oscar ired four high
calibre bullets through a locked door,
killing Reeva in the early hours of
Valentines Day in 2013.
I think that Judge Masipas
ruling has certainly contributed to
the belief that in South Africa you
beneit from a different kind of justice
if you are privileged, white or male.
I suspect this has more to do with
class though just look at President
Zuma and the way he has been able
to avoid prosecution over the years,
says Mandy, who is now focusing her
attention on turning Behind The Door
into a three-part documentary with
Hartiwood Films and Deepend Films.
As for Oscars fate? Mandy says, I
think he will struggle to reintegrate
into society. Hes been convicted in
the court of public opinion and now
theres an entrenched view that justice
hasnt been done. I foresee him living a
relatively quiet life, doing community
work or working with children.

THIS
WEEK WITH
BAR RY
B R A D S H AW

I HAVE A REACTION ON
A GENETIC LEVEL
AGAINST SHOPPING
This week, Barry Bradshaw has a brilliant plan to prevent mens loathing of malls from
sabotaging otherwise perfect relationships
EVERY SO OFTEN they have a good idea in the UK.

Have you heard of the man crche? Its the best

concept ever. Its in a big department store called
Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge in London, and
Im sure they hope that while youre there youll buy
some clothes, and maybe some man-moisturiser and
man-haircare products, but the real reason the man
crche exists is to neutralise people like me.
I have a reaction on a genetic level against
shopping. I have the best intentions, but the moment
I follow my partner into a mall, I become skittish
and jumpy; I start peering into corners and down
corridors as though expecting something awful to
loom up at me. I become disoriented which way
did we just come in? Havent we just been down this
corridor? Are we underground? Which way is up?
Are we underwater?! Help, Im drowning!
Even peoples faces seem looming and sinister. And
the way they walk why do they walk so weirdly
the moment they go shopping? Why do they dawdle
four abreast that way? How is it possible to move that
slowly without just toppling over and falling asleep?
Why are they here? Are they lost too?
Every trip to go shopping with a partner starts to
break down in exactly the same way. If youre going
to have such a long face about it, shell say, Id
rather you just didnt come.
I dont have a long face, I say, but Im lying. I do
have a long face. My face is longer than the Comrades

32

marathon. Its longer than a box set of a Shonda

Rhimes TV series. Its longer than the wait for service
in a Cape Town restaurant.
Im trying to be a good boyfriend, but I sink into
a cloudy soup of my own dismay. Why are we taking
so long? Why isnt there anywhere to sit down that
isnt by the shoe section, where the assistants keep
coming up and asking if they can help me? I have
considered many ways of getting out of shopping
without looking like Im sulking or uncooperative.
Ive considered pretending Im having an epileptic it.
I dont know why she ever wants me to go with
her in the irst place, but it always ends up in us
scowling our way back, and her saying, I hope youre
happy now! And Im not. I am never happy now.
But in Harvey Nichols, they have the man
crche, although I wish they wouldnt call it that.
Theyve converted their mens wear department into
a gigantic man cave, complete with a bar, a barber, a
place to get a sandwich and a PlayStation hub and I
assume a masseuse and someone to talk cricket with.
Why have they taken this long to come up with
this idea? Its a win-win situation. Take your time,
wed say to our partners. Dont rush. Try on all the
colours. Dont forget the handbags.
Bless you, Harvey Nicks. If only all our problems
could be solved so easily.

Could storing vital luid from your
childs umbilical cord save family
members lives? We investigate the
process thats taking SA by storm
UMBILICAL CORDS are magical
things. While they may be slimy
and odd-looking, they not only
keep a baby alive in the womb,
they also hold the key to curing a
handful of diseases. They contain
stem cells, which make several
innovative treatments possible.
Since the technology became
publicly available in the 1990s,
hundreds of thousands of parents
across the globe have stored their
babys umbilical cord stem cells
with private blood banks as a kind
of health insurance.
In SA, DJ Zinhle, KFM
presenter Ryan OConnor and
Afrikaans crooner Kurt Darren
have eagerly jumped on the trend.

GRAZIA NEWS REPORT

Kurt, whose daughter Kyrahs

umbilical cord blood is stored
with Cryo-Save one of SAs stem
cell storage banks tells Grazia,
If you can do something extra to
help ensure your child has a better
chance at a healthy and happy life,
why wouldnt you do it?
The most important thing
for any parent is to know their
children are safe. By storing their
stem cells, you have the peace of
mind of knowing they will have a
much better chance of being eligible
for current and future stem cell
treatments that could one day save
their lives. That is a very valuable
investment to make.
Ryan agrees. He says it seemed
like an obvious choice to store his
daughter Faiths stem cells when she
was born last year. With medical
science in the ield of treating
diseases progressing so quickly,
there was no question about it,
he tells us.
Zinhle adds, When I fell
pregnant with Kairo, I had very
little information related to having
a baby and the options I had for
giving birth. I made a point of
inding out as much as possible,
and I will forever be grateful that I
found out about the importance of
preserving and storing her umbilical
cord stem cells at birth.
That was the one and only
opportunity we had to take out
this insurance for treating diseases
34

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

According to experts, you should
consider storing your babys cord
cells if:
You have a family history of
speciic illnesses, such as blood
cancers and disorders or inherited
immune deiciencies.
You have siblings who suffer
from diseases that could
be treatable by a stem
cell transplant.
You come from a family
of African origin and mixedrace marriages this makes it
extremely dificult to ind suitable
donors, who are seriously underrepresented in public banks.
You want a form of medical
insurance for your little one, giving
you peace of mind.

FAST FACTS
To date, over 30 000 transplants
have been performed using these
remarkable healing cells.
This blood is viable for 72 hours
after your baby is born.
Only ive percent of parents
bank cord blood.
According to recent stats,
children make up 26.7 percent
of leukaemia sufferers.
Should you require the stem
cells for your child during their
irst ive years of life, you will be
given a full refund.
Cells are stored for 20 years.
Remember that more diseases
will become treatable with
stem cells over time as the
science advances.

a fighting chance?
Until recently, cord blood was
discarded as waste at birth. But
then scientists discovered that the
blood in the placenta and umbilical
cord about 100ml on average
is a rich source of blood-forming
stem cells. These cells are young and
the purest form of non-embryonic
stem cells available in the body.
They have already proven useful
in the treatment of more than
70 diseases, including leukaemia,
multiple sclerosis, lymphoma and
immune deiciencies.
Other revolutionary stem cell
therapies still in development
include treatments for cerebral
palsy, autism, Alzheimers and
Parkinsons disease.
Another promising feature that
stem cells possess is their ability
to regenerate organs and tissues
that arent working properly (for
example, they may reverse macular
degeneration in the retina that is the
leading cause of vision loss).
Regenerative research is still in its
trial phase, but experts believe its a
matter of years before people will be
able to reap the beneits.

members too. When a family

member is stricken with a serious
disease, saving the stem cells of a
younger brother or sister offers a
precious ray of hope for treatment.
Although the chances go from 1
in 4 of a match in a sibling to 1
in 8 with a parent, this beats the
underwhelming odds of inding
a suitable bone-marrow donor,
explains Louis Rehrl, Cryo-Save
managing director.
But while stem cell storage is
clearly a powerful tool in the world
of modern medicine, in countries
that do not have a public stem
cell bank like SA access and
affordability are key issues. At
private facilities, prices range from
R13000 to R25000 excluding
the R220 annual storage fee.

A WORTHY CAUSE
Even though the chances of a match
are high, which could result in a
cure, the storage process is beyond
the inancial reach of many South
Africans, notes Louis Rehrl of CryoSave, a stem cell storage bank. Thats
why the company runs the Save 3 Lives
initiative, which allows underprivileged
parents the chance to store their
childrens umbilical cord stem cells.
The campaign looks to raise
awareness across South Africa about
the fact that these stem cells can
be saved and potentially used for
future treatment for a range of serious
diseases, says Louis. Equally, we
want to help South African families in
need, and to make sure they are able
to take advantage of the opportunity
for treatment, even if they are
experiencing inancial challenges.
The programme offers destitute
families the opportunity to have the
cord blood stem cells of their newborn
child collected and saved without any
charges with the aim of treating
a diseased irst-line relative in the
near future.

THE TRUTH ABOUT DATING

WHEN YOURE DISABLED
When Kristen Parisi, 30,
ventured into the world
of online dating, she had
no idea her disability
would provoke such a
shocking response

36

TYPE THE PHRASE wheelchair +

Tinder into Twitter and youll be met

with some pretty shocking results.
I should know, I did it one dark
evening, when Id been left feeling
so worthless and so barren that there
was nothing left to do but punish
myself. As I scrolled through the
barrage of derogatory comments, one
of them in particular stood out. Was
just talking to a girl on Tinder then
found out she was in a wheelchair.
LMAO! it said, the words peppered
with dozens of laughing emojis. My

breath caught in my throat. I felt as

if Id been scorched. I wanted to hunt
this person down, look them in the
eye and ask them what they would do
if, for every minute of every day, they
had to work twice as hard as anyone
else just to seem normal.
Id signed myself up to Tinder a
couple of months before. I had the
same reasons as any other woman
to want to try it: I was curious and
thought it might be fun. Id taken
care over my proile talking up my
great career as a senior PR executive,

Kristin Parisi has experienced the negative side

of dating as a disabled person, facing both
vicious comments and blatant ignorance, but she
still believes in the power of love

my outgoing personality and my love

of travel. But there was a worry in the
back of my mind. I was aware that I
was not like the majority of women
you might ind on that site, given that
Im a paraplegic, paralysed from the
waist down since a catastrophic car
accident at the age of ive.
Yes, I get around in a wheelchair,
but Im fully independent and live on
my own. My chair is just a means to
get me from A to B at least thats
how I see it. But the amount of stares,
whispered comments and straight-up
abuse I get every day suggests that my
chair is a bigger deal for others than it
is for me.
Ive had strangers come up to me
and ask if I can have children.
Ive had my own family members
simply assume that I cant have sex. Ive
even had people jump to the conclusion
that a boyfriend is my carer, that they
couldnt possibly have any romantic
interest in me.
Normal dating can be awkward. I
remember being out for dinner with an
ex-boyfriend, and the waitress simply
wouldnt address me. No matter how
many times I asked her for a glass
of water or a wine recommendation,
shed look over my head and say to
him, What is it shed like? Another
guy lat-out refused to admit to other
people that we were dating a move
that left me with the ingrained and allconsuming conviction that I am simply
not worth being shown off in public.
When it came to Tinder, I thought
things might be different. But I was
wrong. I didnt want to be deceptive
by cutting my chair out of my pictures,
but equally I didnt think it would
have that much of an impact on
whether someone would want to go out
with me. Surely these men would care
more about our shared interests, our
intellectual compatibility, or whether
well ind each other funny all the
things that would go into dating if the
chair didnt exist.
But I decided to initially include
pictures of me in my wheelchair and
the responses were astonishing: Will
you give me a ride in your vag?

ITS SO
IMPORTANT TO
ASK QUESTIONS
AND CREATE A
DIALOGUE ABOUT
DISABILITY AND
SEX, BECAUSE
THE DISABLED AS
A COMMUNITY
ARE SO OFTEN
DESEXUALISED
one asked. Another simply messaged
out of the blue saying, So I assume
youre not looking to f*ck? The absurd
comments, always to do with sex, kept
coming thick and fast. I soon took
down the photos.
Things picked up soon after that,
but I still wanted my dates to know
I would be arriving in a wheelchair.
Whenever I broached the subject,
however, all I got back were insults.
So why are you on here? Shouldnt you
be dating someone in a wheelchair?
asked one guy. Gross, no, replied one
immediately, before promptly deleting
me. Another encouragingly asked a
few questions about my injury, before
swiftly changing to, So wait, does that
mean you cant feel anal?
Mostly, it felt like a constant ight
for my right to be someones date; like I
had to prove to them that I was a fully
functioning human being who was
worthy of their time. Unsurprisingly,

I got angry a lot and would dream

up furious messages that I knew Id
never have the guts to send. But on
other occasions, I felt an overwhelming
sadness. I remember getting one
particularly brutal rejection the week
before my birthday, and just sitting
there clutching my phone with tears
streaming down my face. I rang my
best friend and asked her, Am I just
not lovable? These men, whom I had
never met, whom I had reached out to
with hope and vulnerability, had made
me feel like I was worth nothing.
Im still hopeful Ill ind love, and
Im determined to be open and candid
about my experiences with dating. I
take relationships very seriously. Its so
important to ask questions and create
a dialogue about disability and sex,
because the disabled as a community
are so often desexualised.
Disabled dating is largely
underrepresented across the board, but
there are some TV shows that portray
disabled people and their romantic
lives in a really positive way. Glee, for
example, has been brilliant for that,
and even Family Guy does it well. The
character Joe is in a wheelchair, but
he has a wife and he has children. His
friends make fun of his disability, just
like my friends make fun of mine. In
return, I make fun of their weird noses
or their strange hair. Its part of life.
My experience has been unique
in some ways but, in others, it
hasnt so much in life is based on
the physical and people who arent
quite as physically able as the rest
of the population are pitifully easily
dismissed. Still, Im glad I put myself
out there. Ive come away with a
stronger sense of self, and I now know
I dont need to apologise for who I am.
And it wasnt all bad. I did meet one
guy who sent me roses and made me
feel like the most beautiful woman in
the world. Were no longer together
I ended things, as we werent quite
the right it for each other but it
reminded me that I am lovable and
attractive; that Im not just the girl in
the wheelchair. Im Kristen, and thats
enough for me.

WOKE

Technically, we have Erykah Badu to

thank for introducing us to woke
in her 2008 single Master Teacher. In
the wake of movements like Black
Lives Matter as well as a greater
understanding of white privilege and
cultural appropriation, the word has
never been bigger. To be woke is to
be aware, to have knowledge of what
is happening in the world and, most
importantly, why.

In light of the UK Brexit vote and

the regrexit that followed fast,

# LINTONLIES

We have the ramblings of a clueless

Scottish actress named Louise Linton
to thank for this term. After penning
her memoir about her gap year to
Zambia, called In Congos Shadow: One
Girls Perilous Journey To The Heart Of
38

Africa, Louise was

immediately called
out on Twitter
by Zambians for
her inaccuracies,
colonial stereotypes
and lots of blatant
exaggeration.
All summed up
perfectly in one tweet
by Lydia Ngoma, We now
have a name for any untrue, harmful
stereotype about Africa. It will be
known as a Linton Lie #LintonLies.
BLESSER

The South African term for

sugar daddy immediately began
to trend on social media after
e.tv aired their current affairs
programme Check Point earlier
this year, in which Kenny Kunene
publicly apologised to all the young
women he used to bless (date in
exchange for luxury goods, cars,
money and overseas travel). But really,
we have Instagram and Twitter to

thank for the term, because whenever

gifts were received by blessees, they
would be posted on social media with
the hashtag #blessed.
FINGERMOUTHING

Duckface is so 2013. If youre

The brainchild of MTV News

columnist Ira Madison III each

privileges either with their ignorance,
annoying behaviour or a combination
of both. It went viral when Hillary

Obama just endorsed Crooked

of Obama but nobody else does.
If anyone tells you to delete your

MAJOR KEY

The producer, mogul and rapper

DJ Khaled has been sharing his
motivational know-how on Snapchat
all year. By July 29, his signature
phrase, major key, will become the

title of his debut album out on Sony.

For the record, major keys are items
or actions that are essential for success
and living the good life. For Khaled,
these include turkey bacon and a lot
of pillows.
S N AT C H E D

Basically the new on leek. If you

think someone is looking amazing
or their outit is on point, then the
ultimate compliment is to tell them
their hair, shoes or their eyebrows
are snatched. Like all the truly
great slang words, this one began in
the black gay community in the US
South, and was introduced into pop
culture via Ru Pauls Drag Race. See
also: slay.
S L AY

Beyonc may have introduced the

world to the concept with Formation,
the irst single from her groundbreaking visual album Lemonade, but
it owes its origins to the black gay
culture of Altanta, Georgia. Now
we all know that if were proud of an
achievement, or even just ourselves,
we slay.
S NOOZE FE E D

In the 21st century, hitting the snooze

button for an extra ive minutes
of shut-eye has been replaced with
rolling over and sleepily scrolling
through various social media feeds for
an extra 20 minutes of procrastination
time. With a further ten minutes
added on in winter.
You got all that, right?

and used eyeliner to scribble on
their models lids instead. Dont
spend too much time overthinking it, says Bimpe. With
this look its okay if the lines arent
symmetrical. Finish with a matte

Bimpe touts the glossy eye as one of her must-try looks this season. All
you have to do is mix the pigment from a pencil eyeliner with some lip balm
on the back of your hand before applying it to your eyelids. For maximum
impact, use the DIY eye gloss to line the entire eye, as seen on the Chanel
runway. Pair with a subtle nude lip to keep all the attention on your eyes.

Is Brexit the beginning of

the end for you and your
go-to red lippy?
AS A SOUTH AFRICAN-BORN British
passport carrier, the announcement
of Brexit was a sad one for me. You
see, that little maroon book gave me
the power to work, live and move
through Europe without the need
of pesky (and pricey) visas. For me,
Brexit means the demise of a sense
of freedom I once cherished, even if
it was from a distant continent. (I
know, #privilegeproblems.) But as
people begin to speculate that Brexit
means the end of the European Union
altogether, globalisation seems a little
shaky now too. Countries opening
their borders to one another promoted
a sense of global living, whether it was
through trade, travel or the sharing of
cultures. Now that Britain is closing
up her borders, will the rest of the
world follow suit?
Its an important question to ask
because whether you realise it or
not, you probably slapped that exact

amalgamation of cultures onto your

face this morning. Take my skincare
regime for instance:
I use a face wash, serum and
moisturiser by Intraceuticals (an
Aussie brand), followed by Eucerin
SPF (shipped in from Germany). Next
comes my French Yves Saint Laurent
foundation, US eyeshadow, highlighter
and mascara from M.A.C, Urban
Decay and Smashbox respectively
and then I inish my look with a
swoosh of Italian muse Sophia Lorens
red lipstick from Dolce & Gabbana.
Thanks to trade agreements, I
can buy all these goodies right here
in South Africa but should import
prices skyrocket, could I survive
without my Italian eye cream?
Perhaps this could be the boost that
proudly SA labels have always needed
(unless theyre importing ingredients).
Skoon, Esse, Africology, Bio-Oil,
Lipidol, Nimue (and Michael Mikiala
for men). But just as in fashion where
we like to mix our Zara with our Seli
and Rich Mnisi, its fantastic to be able
to have access to a selection of prices
and products from across the globe.
Critics blame the Brexit result on
poor, unclear campaigning, stating that
the Brits didnt quite understand the
ramiications and simply werent given
enough information on what leaving
the EU would mean. Perhaps if camp
Bremain had explained that leaving
might impact the availability of your
LOral shampoo, things might be
different? Perhaps a womans addiction
to Italian lipstick could have prevented
the split of one of the modern worlds
oldest unions? Just a thought...

HOW DID IT FEEL TO HEAR YOU D WON

THE PART OF ALIYAH ON ROCKVILLE?

It was a dream come true! I really salute

Connie and Shona Ferguson for taking a
chance on me. Not many people know this,
but I auditioned to be on the irst season of
the show. I was working as a brand manager
at LOral and couldnt take much time
off to be involved in the production. This
year, the planning was right, and I feel so
grateful that the opportunity was still open.
Gods timing is always perfect.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR VERY
FIRST DAY ON SET ?

I had a ball of nerves in my stomach! I was

anxious and excited at the same time. I had
to start with Aliyahs night-time job [as
a stripper], which is quite interesting and
totally out of character for me. Lets just
say that once I was standing at the pole,
ierceness took over, and my alter ego was
introduced. I hope people enjoy that.
WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO DO TO PREPARE?

I had to go to pole dancing classes, and I

also had to step into Aliyahs shoes. I had
to get into her headspace in order to tell her
story authentically and honestly, so I really

76

respect her as a human being. I worked a

lot with Shona during this time to help me
prepare mentally for the role.

INSTA-STALK

HOW DID IT FEEL TO TURN 30 THIS YEAR?

The crazy thing about turning 30 is that

irstly you cant believe how far youve come,
and secondly you just dont feel that age
because its a big number! But I lost a friend
last year who was only 27, and I thought
about how happy she would be if she were in
my shoes that really helped me to embrace
my age. Being fabulously 30 has taught me
that we are not deined by our age, but rather
how we feel and how we view ourselves, our
lives, and most importantly our choices. Its
also allowed me to reach a place where Im
so comfortable with myself that I can walk
into a room and present who I am and what I
stand for without the fear of what people will
think or whether theyll like me or not, and
thats really liberating!

WHILE ON SET ?

[Laughs.] Rockville is a huge production, and

you only really get to interact with people
you have scenes with or whose scenes come
before or after yours. The whole production
team received me so well that we became
like family, from the make-up artists and
wardrobe to catering and the rest of the crew.
I learnt so much from the other characters,
especially Shona and Connie, whom I worked
with a lot. Gail [Mabalane] and Mbali
[Enhle Mlotshwa] were also really awesome. I
still keep in touch with them, whether its on
social media or otherwise.
WHAT DOES THE REST OF 2016 HAVE IN
STORE FOR YOU?

So much! Im the new ambassador of one of

SAs most loved facecare brands. And Ive
just joined an awesome international family
channel as a TV host. Unfortunately, I cant
reveal more about these projects yet, but SA
will know about them soon enough.

GRAZIA HOROSCOPE

CANCER June 22 July 23

You have the upper hand this week. A full moon suggests
that those close to you may be throwing their weight around,
but that will be short-lived, while youre getting your annual
energy top-up from the sun. You get to pull the strings
inancially now too keep tabs on your cash low and avoid
the risk of overspending just to make a lashy impression.
LEO July 24 August 23

By Orli Lysen

You could reach a goal with a itness aim or with your daily
routine at work this week. Being virtuous looks good on you
now, so congratulate yourself, take a breather, then move on
to the next step of your wellness and work evolution. With
Venus and Mercury in your sign, its what you do as well as
how you do it that will get you noticed by all the right people.

AQUARIUS January 21 February 19

VIRGO August 24 September 23

Its a fabulous week for relationships. Mercury and Venus

make you chatty, charming and lirtatious, personally and
professionally, so you can seal a business deal or make a deeper
connection with someone special. Youre sharper with your
inances, friends and future plans too, as a full moon helps you
clarify your ideas, and Mars gets you extra motivated at work.

With a full moon inluencing your romantic and creative

sides, both could get serious. You might take things to the
next level, or decide its time to call it a day. You dont take
love or work lightly, but its an emotional week so resist any
knee-jerk reactions. Reschedule discussions about moving in,
up, on or out for when youll be thinking more rationally.

PISCES February 20 March 20

LIBRA September 24 October 23

Put the inishing touches to plans involving other people

this week. Cooperation is vital; if youre prepared to do the
hard yards, youll earn kudos, respect, and perhaps love and
money too. Health improves if you add variety and make
well-being fun. At work, use your network to help you climb
the career ladder.

A home situation comes to a peak this week you might

successfully create a home workspace, or some rigid rules
may start to dissolve as you see how much theyve held you
back. Getting out and about holds the promise of improved
friendships and better romance now too, so get reacquainted
with your neighbourhood and what it has to offer.

ARIES March 21 April 20

SCORPIO October 24 November 22

Your main issues this week are work and pleasure. You could
hit a career peak, decide to take a career break to do your own
creative thing, or focus on starting or adding to your family.
Or you might just need some downtime after a full-on phase
at work. Whatever you do to loosen up, plan it into your
schedule, rather than hitting burn-out or burning bridges.

This week could see you getting a serious message across to

someone at last. It could link to money or emotions, but once
its done, youll have a huge sense of relief. As you connect
with helpful friends or like-minded groups, a chance to move
ambitions forward also occurs now if you get realistic about
your abilities and know what you want to achieve and why.

TAURUS April 21 May 20

SAGITTARIUS November 23 December 22

Its never too late to learn something new. This weeks full
moon suggests you could advance by being open to new
possibilities, switching from your current work role to
something that suits you better. Your creative abilities are
at an all-time high, so put your talents to good use but be
realistic, rather than over-idealistic.

A lashback to your past could stir up your wanderlust or

thirst for knowledge. You might learn a new language, plan
a trip or share loving chats with someone from distant shores.
Relect on the limits set by your home, family or lifestyle
and the options that could open up if you set your sights
higher so that your dreams can be set in motion.

GEMINI May 21 June 21

CAPRICORN December 23 January 20

Youre at your most entertaining this week, winning friends

and inluencing people including partners in love or work
whove seemed distant lately. Concerns around money,
intimacy or a behind-the-scenes career power play come full
circle now, too. Use your wit and charm to get things out in
the open and move on, rather than letting concerns fester.

A full moon in your sign this week is a signal to slow down

you tend to drive yourself hard. This is a time to celebrate
successes, let go of perceived failures and be kinder to your
body. Rekindle your passion for life and love. Embrace new
ideas changing the habits of a lifetime might be painful,
but it could transform you into who youre meant to be.

DR SMILE GOT HIS MASTERS.

An overjoyed Dr Lex Leo celebrated
his masters degree in dentistry on
Instagram, remembering how his dear
gran was kicked out of university and
denied the chance to study because
of her Bahai faith. He also wished his
beloved mom could have been there
to see it, but she died after her own
graduation, having gone back to
university at age 60 to study, so that
she could better serve humanity. Aw!
