Business as Usual

Go fund me page set up and active!!!

https://www.gofundme.com/together-we-can-for-pdh-togo
PDH welcomes and supports many Orphans from several different neighbourhoods in
Togo. Many of these Orphans are able to visit PDH regularly and those living far away are
visited by a PDH staff when possible. During their visits the children are encouraged to
learn, share and discuss as well as learn useful life skills. PDH also offers a safe and
joyful environment where they can for a moment forget the hardship of their current life
situation and instead play, laugh and create lasting positive memories in order to keep
their spirits up and their outlook bright and hopeful.
PDH is enthusiastically hoping to raise some funds in order to finish the final stage of the
roof over the classrooms at the centre. Catherine Lawlor and Warren Trottier successfully
raised the funds for the first half of the building with their raise the roof campaign. Now
we are hoping to use all the space available at the PDH centre by finalizing the roof on the
other half of the building. This will allow us to hold more classes, for more children and for
more events. Please visit our fundraising page and share with your friends and family.
We thank you for your on-going support and trust in our work!

Christmas 2016 An event to remember for the Sponsored Orphans of PDH

Over the past few weeks PDH has been reaching out to many contacts around the world,
in order to raise some funds to create a memorable and joyful Christmas for the children
they sponsor. They have been collecting both donated items and monetary donations.
Their current goal of $54.00 USD will be shared and allocated to purchase Clothing,
Shoes, Toys and food to be distributed to the Togolese children. In addition PDH is
excited to be using a small portion of the funds to take the kids on a special holiday outing.
We hope that this outing will lift the hopes of the orphans and also offer them an
experience to be remembered.
The staff our working hard to think up on great ideas to really entertain all the children and
make lasting memories.

3 Good News
Afatchao Nana Yao (4 - 209) and his return to School
Afatchao is a fairly new case to PDH. His grandmother approached PDH as
Afatchao is a Togolese Orphan and his grandmother is unable to support him
adequately as she currently cares for him since his mother passed away.
Afatchao was one of the recipients of the schools supplies that were
distributed and mentioned in the past newsletter. On the 29th November,
PDH undertook a visit to his school to follow up on his progress. To our
disappointment, he was not in school and we were informed that he had not
arrived for the day. We were thankfully escorted to the area where he sleeps
so that we could investigate the reason for his lack of attendance in school.
Once in his area, we finally were able to speak with Afatchao. He informed
us that as he was unable to pay the fee of 2,000F (Less than $3.50 USD) as
required by every student at the school in order to continue building the
facilities, that he was told he could not present at school until the fees were
paid. We also discovered another 8 children from the same school that were
all home today for a lack of paid school fees.
A meeting was arranged with the school Director and Afatchao for the
following day to ensure Afatchao would be reinstated in the school. We are
happy to report that the fees for Atatchao have been paid by PDH and he
today on the 30th November has been able to return to school. Additionally,
our efforts to spread the word and seek assistance from around the globe has
brought some interest in Afatachaos case and a possible offer to Sponsor
him from Overseas in currently in the works.

GOOD NEWS CONTINUED:

Nana Okossivaks (1 269) release from Hospital
It has been a hard few years for Nana who has been diagnosed with a heart
condition and a lack red cells in her blood. She has been in and out of
hospital and most frequently 10 days ago she was administered in hospital
and required several treatments all financially out of reach for her. PDH
initiated several visits to the hospital where she was to ensure her procedures
would be completed, paid for, and also in order to speak with Nana for
updates on her well-being and progress. It hasnt been easy, and has proven
especially painful for Nana, but we are happy to announce that on the 30th
November Nana was released from hospital and will be able to continue her
treatment from home. PDH will continue to support her to ensure that
medication is made available to her, as unfortunately her current condition is
not curable and will need to be monitored and well managed.
Two days after her release, PDH staff visited Nana at her home which is
located close to the centre. She was in good spirits, and felt much better.
She confirmed that she was taking her medication as prescribed and ensured
she ate her 3 meals and day and increased her intake of water. Nana has
been shown by PDH staff also some good stretches and support methods so
that the pain near the site of injection in her arm would heal more promptly.
We thank all supporters of PDH for your ongoing trust in us as without you,
we would be unable to improve the lives of people like Nana.

Sad News

A long wait for a sick child

Today was a special and especially sad case. An update visit to a young 7
month old Togolese baby boy by the name of Gator Yao and his mother
(Dado Apedo) a poor woman who came to PDH on the 16th November in
hopes for help.
Gator was born with an abnormality that usually affects 1 in 5000 children.
He was born without an anus, meaning the his body is unable to expel any
faeces and waste. During our visit we followed up on the two incisions that
were surgically made on the side of his little belly. These incisions allow the
intestines to be connected to a small bag that hangs outside his body in order
to collect the faeces.
In many cases, babies who are born with this abnormality also show signs of
other conditions. This has proven true it the case of Gator, as it was also
diagnosed that his penis is not properly formed and will also need a surgical
treatment.
Unfortunately, the very delayed date of the Surgery currently only scheduled
for the 17th of Feb 2017, has meant that PDH along with Gators mother and
the boy himself must wait patiently and hope that no infection takes to the
incision before the surgery. This has also meant that his mother was required
to attend a session at the hospital so she could be educated on how care and
properly clean the incision as she is caring for Gator in her small home until
he can be fully treated.
The cost of this urgent treatment is estimated to
be upwards of 120,000.00 F CFA plus the
additional costs of the bags, medicines, and
exams prior to his surgery. PDH has ensured
that Gators mother could have the knowledge
on how to care for her son and the medical
supplies required. They will be covering the
cost of the surgery as well as providing support
to Gator and his family during this time of
hardship. We ask you to keep Gator in your
thoughts and send your love to our little buddy,
we all hope for a positive outcome, a successful
surgery and a prompt recovery.

5 Whats New in Togo?

Comme un Poisson dans Leau / Exposition de Djonda Akphou
Gustave
We must not only look at the cause of Climate Change, but we must also
suggest solutions to minimize the effects of Climate Change and learn to
adapt to our new environments. A comment made by Artist Djonda Akpehou
Gustave, whos current FREE exhibition Comme un Poisson dans Leau is
currently being shown at the Jardin de Linstitut Francais du Togo in Lom.
This wonderful FREE exhibition will be on display until the 23rd of December
2016. These impressive pieces that present a type of elegance mixed with
strong and sharp edges is a great way to discuss the current state of our
Ecology and the need for urgent action.
Djonda Akpehou Gustave is known for his original work which is always
accompanied by a strong message. He continuously finds new and
interesting formats in which to display his work. This exhibition is bound to
teach us all something new no matter our age or background, there is
something for everyone!!

6 Volunteer News: Join Us!

PDH warmly welcomes international interest in our volunteer program. We have hosted a
diverse crowd in Lom over the last decade from solo travellers, to groups of friends, to
one mother-daughter pairing all of whom fit into the organisation equally well.
Regardless of your age (we have seen 19 through to 67) or your profession, volunteer
work in Togo can be a profound, rewarding and enjoyable experience
Volunteer Testimonial:
There have been countless times where those who were able to lend me a hand
helped me. I could sit here honestly and write a book on the generous help and
support I have encountered from my friends and family. Goals and dreams will
never simply be handed to someone, dedication, hard work must also play a part,
however it is my belief that together, with the help and support of others we can all
succeed and achieve far more.
This is why I am taking this time to volunteer. I am here to pass on some of the good
Karma I have received in life, to teach, support and assist wherever I can and
whenever I can. I am here to learn and grow personally also. There is a lesson to
be learnt in all we do, and I can already say that after one week in Togo I have learnt
many lessons.
I have no doubt that the journey will not be easy, but not much is ever gained by
taking the easier path. I truly hope to make a difference, even if only a small
difference. I hope to bring some hope and joy to the ones I will encounter whos
current circumstances prove to be challenging. I also hope to be able to leave
behind some happy memories and additional knowledge to the rest of the hardworking team here at PDH.

What does a typical work day look like?

From Monday to Friday, you will typically attend our daily meeting at 07:30 before
accompanying one of our agents on a case visit. From 13:00 to 14:45 you are
encouraged to take a long lunch with your host, before returning to document your
visit in the afternoon and assist with activities at the centre until 17:30.

What is the accommodation like?

You will stay in a family home, either at the centre or with a partnering family. You will
have a private, comfortable room with basic amenities. Please keep in mind that
conditions in Togo may not meet what you are used to at home, however we work to
make your stay as pleasant as possible. Let your host know of any dietary
preferences so they can tailor meals to you!

How long can I stay?

There are no minimum or maximum stays at PDH. We are willing to work with your
schedule to find something that works for both of us.

How much does the program cost?

Volunteers are asked to make a 100,000 CFA (150/US$200) donation on arrival.
Full board accommodation is provided at a rate of 25,000 CFA (37.50/ US$50) per
week, i.e. the total for twelve weeks would be 400,000f CFA (600/US$800).

How can I fund my trip?

While living expenses in Lom are low, getting here can be a financial challenge.
Research flights on sites such as http://skycanner.com, http://hipmunk.com or
http://matrix.itasoftware.com to find the cheapest option. You might want to consider
fundraising through friends and family or researching organisations that offer
volunteer grants, such as
http://go-volunteerabroad.com/volunteer-abroad-scholarship.

How can I access my money while in Togo?

Please note that only VISA & MasterCard bankcards work in Togo. Maestro and
American Express are not accepted anywhere. ATMs are not difficult to find; there is
one a relatively short distance from the centre. There are also Western Union and
MoneyGram outlets in case you need to have money sent from home.

How can I get more information?

For more information on volunteering and what life in Lom is like, you can visit our
website, www.pdh-togo.org. You should also like us on Facebook at
www.facebook.com/PDHTogo to get updates on our work here.

How can I apply to be a volunteer at PDH?

Express your interest today by sending an email to pdh_volontaires@yahoo.fr or
centre_social@yahoo.fr. Please allow up to one week for our reply, we work with a
very limited internet connection! When you receive a response, please carefully read
the Essential Guidelines for Volunteering at PDH, which we forward to all
prospective volunteers.

7 Reflections on Donations
We often get questions about what people can send to us to help. Over the last
couple of years more and more things that we need such as school books, stationery
and condoms are available here to buy. Monetary donations are the most liquid, and
thus most effective donation that we can receive. We avoid postal costs, and often
prices are cheaper here so we can gain the maximum value from your money.
Another positive outcome is that it helps the local economy here in Togo. On the
other hand if there is something in particular that you would like to send over (e.g.
clothes, puzzles, board games) then feel free to do so; we know sometimes it is
nice to send over products that you have chosen, so we will always happily accept
any packages. We are also very grateful for supplies that volunteers bring with them
from their families and friends.

8 How to Donate
Very often at PDH we are forced to turn away people that we quite simply cannot
help due to our extremely limited financial and material resources. We are 100%
dependant on donations and volunteers and believe that PDH is an excellent choice
for those of you who wish to donate money to a small non-governmental, non-profit
aid organization. Our administrative costs are very low and we guarantee that your
donation, in its entirety, will provide relief that is desperately required by those in
need. Before making a donation, we recommend consulting us to decide the best
method in order to avoid excessive fees.

10 Help With Empty Pockets

We at PDH are aware that many of you
who would like to help our cause here in
Togo simply cannot due to your own
financial limitations. There are, however,
various alternatives to sending money
that can greatly benefit the humanitarian
work of PDH.
Promote PDH Our website (www.pdhtogo.org) features a Download Depot,
which stores posters and various images. You can download and print these items in
order to promote our organization in relevant locations around your town or city, e.g.
cafs, churches and universities. You could provide them with a copy of this
newsletter to distribute.
Spread the word Help to raise our profile by telling your friends and family about us
and showing them this newsletter. The more people who know about PDH, the
greater our support network - it's that simple. You may know somebody who is in a
position to promote our cause: a university lecturer who could throw us up on a slide,
a local priest who could speak to his congregation, or even a travel agent.
Like us on Facebook! Every acknowledgement of our work means a lot to the local
volunteers, so consider liking us today! Please go to www.facebook.com/PDHTogo
and click Like to receive regular updates on the vital work were doing here in Togo!
We now have over 250 likes on our Facebook page. Thank you so much to those
who have supported us in this way.
Pray For those of you who are religious, you will know the value of prayer that
money simply cannot buy. Please remember us in your prayers, as everyone's
spiritual faith is integral to the work that we carry out here.
Fundraise You can help PDH raise funds by conducting your own fundraising event,
