Business as Usual
3 Good News
Afatchao Nana Yao (4 - 209) and his return to School
Afatchao is a fairly new case to PDH. His grandmother approached PDH as
Afatchao is a Togolese Orphan and his grandmother is unable to support him
adequately as she currently cares for him since his mother passed away.
Afatchao was one of the recipients of the schools supplies that were
distributed and mentioned in the past newsletter. On the 29th November,
PDH undertook a visit to his school to follow up on his progress. To our
disappointment, he was not in school and we were informed that he had not
arrived for the day. We were thankfully escorted to the area where he sleeps
so that we could investigate the reason for his lack of attendance in school.
Once in his area, we finally were able to speak with Afatchao. He informed
us that as he was unable to pay the fee of 2,000F (Less than $3.50 USD) as
required by every student at the school in order to continue building the
facilities, that he was told he could not present at school until the fees were
paid. We also discovered another 8 children from the same school that were
all home today for a lack of paid school fees.
A meeting was arranged with the school Director and Afatchao for the
following day to ensure Afatchao would be reinstated in the school. We are
happy to report that the fees for Atatchao have been paid by PDH and he
today on the 30th November has been able to return to school. Additionally,
our efforts to spread the word and seek assistance from around the globe has
brought some interest in Afatachaos case and a possible offer to Sponsor
him from Overseas in currently in the works.

Sad News
PDH warmly welcomes international interest in our volunteer program. We have hosted a
diverse crowd in Lom over the last decade from solo travellers, to groups of friends, to
one mother-daughter pairing all of whom fit into the organisation equally well.
Regardless of your age (we have seen 19 through to 67) or your profession, volunteer
work in Togo can be a profound, rewarding and enjoyable experience
Volunteer Testimonial:
There have been countless times where those who were able to lend me a hand
helped me. I could sit here honestly and write a book on the generous help and
support I have encountered from my friends and family. Goals and dreams will
never simply be handed to someone, dedication, hard work must also play a part,
however it is my belief that together, with the help and support of others we can all
succeed and achieve far more.
This is why I am taking this time to volunteer. I am here to pass on some of the good
Karma I have received in life, to teach, support and assist wherever I can and
whenever I can. I am here to learn and grow personally also. There is a lesson to
be learnt in all we do, and I can already say that after one week in Togo I have learnt
many lessons.
I have no doubt that the journey will not be easy, but not much is ever gained by
taking the easier path. I truly hope to make a difference, even if only a small
difference. I hope to bring some hope and joy to the ones I will encounter whos
current circumstances prove to be challenging. I also hope to be able to leave
behind some happy memories and additional knowledge to the rest of the hardworking team here at PDH.

7 Reflections on Donations
We often get questions about what people can send to us to help. Over the last
couple of years more and more things that we need such as school books, stationery
and condoms are available here to buy. Monetary donations are the most liquid, and
thus most effective donation that we can receive. We avoid postal costs, and often
prices are cheaper here so we can gain the maximum value from your money.
Another positive outcome is that it helps the local economy here in Togo. On the
other hand if there is something in particular that you would like to send over (e.g.
clothes, puzzles, board games) then feel free to do so; we know sometimes it is
nice to send over products that you have chosen, so we will always happily accept
any packages. We are also very grateful for supplies that volunteers bring with them
from their families and friends.

8 How to Donate
Very often at PDH we are forced to turn away people that we quite simply cannot
help due to our extremely limited financial and material resources. We are 100%
dependant on donations and volunteers and believe that PDH is an excellent choice
for those of you who wish to donate money to a small non-governmental, non-profit
aid organization. Our administrative costs are very low and we guarantee that your
donation, in its entirety, will provide relief that is desperately required by those in
need. Before making a donation, we recommend consulting us to decide the best
method in order to avoid excessive fees.
