Inordertobesuccessfulinthiscourse,youwillneedtospendaconsiderable

reading,studying,andhomework.Eachchaptershouldbereadpriortoinitial
discussioninlecture.Rereadingthetextafterlecturewillhelpinunderstandingthe
materialandreinforcinglecturetopics.Homeworkproblemsarebestcompletedas
theyarebeingpresentedanddiscussedinlecture.Donotputoffstudyand
homeworkassignmentsuntilthenightbeforetheexamoryouwillfail.Attendance
atlabsisamust,unlessyouareseriouslyill.

preparedforupperdivisioncourseworkandeventuallyacareer.Anyonecaughtcheating

LabChemistryisanexperimentalscience.Assuch,itsprinciplesarebestillustratedin
thelaboratorysetting.Asastudentinthiscourse,youwillhavetheopportunitytolearn
manybasicprinciplesofchemistryinamodern,wellequippedlaboratoryenvironment.
Learnthenameofyourlaboratoryteachingassistant(TA)andyourlabsectionnumber.
Youwillneedtoincludethisinformationonyourlabassignmentsandexams.
Allpersonspresentinachemistrylaboratorymustwearapprovedeyeprotection
andclosedtoeshoes.Longhairmustbeconfinedsecurely.Theeyeprotectionmust
bewornbyeverybodywheneveranyoneintheroomisworkingwithchemicals.
Anyonenotincompliancewillbeaskedtoleaveandwillnotbeallowedtoreturn
untilproperlyattired.
LabworkforChem100mustbeperformedinCSL525/522/524/528duringthelabhours
forwhichthestudentisregistered.Becauseoflogisticalconstraints,youwillnotbe
allowedtomakeupmissedlabexperiments;however,yourlowestlabreportandquiz
scoreswillbedroppedwhendeterminingyourcoursegrade.Usethesefreepasses
wisely.
Remember,wheneveranychemicalsareinuseanywhereintheroom,everyonemust
wearappropriategoggles,labcoatorapron,andclosedtoedshoes.Ifyouhave
forgottenyourgogglesthenyoumusteitherborrowapairfromafriend,buynewonesat
thebookstore,orgohomeandtakeazeroonthatlab.Anyweekthatcontainstheword
Experimentonthelabscheduleindicatesgogglesandshoeswillberequiredthatday.
Storeapairofshoesinyourlockerifyouthinkyouwillforgettowearpropershoes.Lab
reportsaredueattheendofthelabperiod.Latereportswillreceivenocredit.No
creditwillbegivenforalabreportiftheworkwasnotactuallydonebythatstudent.
Thelabreportconsistsofthedatapagesandquestionsinthelabmanual.Where
computationsareinvolved,numericalsetupsmustbeshown.Thefinalanswermust
includeunitsandthecorrectnumberofsignificantfigures.Reportsmustbelegible.
Ifyoufailtocheckoutofyourlockerattheendofthesemester,therewillbeafeeof
$25.Ifyouneedtodropduringthesemester,youmustcheckoutofyourlockerbeforea
dropisallowed.
Thereare10participationpointsavailable.Thesewillbeassignedatthediscretionofthe

OnlinehomeworkThepurposeofonlinehomeworkistoallowstudentstheopportunity
toworkattheirownratesonproblemsthatillustrateprinciplesonwhichtheywillbe
testedduringexams.Immediatehelpintheformofguidedsolutions,practice,and
questionhelpisavailabletostudentswhendoingproblems.Multipleattemptsare
allowedforeachproblem,butifyoucannotsolvetheproblemaftermorethanacouple
oftriesthenpleasebringittothehelproominGMCS203forTAhelp.
Thehomeworkgradewillbedeterminedbythenumberofproblemscompletedcorrectly
onlinethroughtheMcGrawHillConnectChemistrymodule.Thetenonlineassignments
correspondtothetenchapterscoveredinthetextbook.Duedatesforeachofthe
assignmentswillbeannouncedontheBlackboardcombinedsectionaseachisassigned.
Approximately650totalproblemswillbeassignedduringthesemester,andthese~650
pointswillbescaleddowntoatotalof50possiblepointsthatwillbeusedindetermining
eachstudentsfinalhomeworkgrade.
EachstudentmustpurchasetheirownConnectChemistryaccesscodefromtheSDSU
bookstore.Avideotutorialonhowtoenrollforandusetheonlinehomeworkplatformis
postedtotheBlackboardCombinedsectionswebsite.
