Genre Analysis Outline

Introduction:
The two genres I chose were Typography and a visual. These two focus on the
subject of World War I and specifically on the view point of the socialist. The typograph
I chose is called Reds, Labor, and the Great War: Antiwar Activism in the Pacific
Northwest. It was written by Rutger Ceballos where the main focus of the paper is the
anti-war movements exclusively in Seattle and the pacific northwest. The second genre I
chose was a visual or iconography called Opposition to WWI by Matthew Trokan. Here
he focuses on the type of propaganda used to resist the war and also about the espionage
act. The video also goes on to talk about a few people who were mainly labor leaders that
participated against the war effort.
Structure and Delivery:
Ceballos structures his typography in the form of a paper. He first starts his paper
with describing a courtroom where socialists were being charged with sedition and then
follows with describing the divide the war brought to citizens. In his introduction he also
mentions how his focus will be on two specific places Seattle and pacific northwest. He
then continues into the body of his paper where he breaks up into different sections.
One talks about the years before the war, then the about the the war and Europe and
then ends with repression and resistance in Seattle. The conclusion reiterates the
perspective of WWI. Along the side Ceballos included other communication features
such as pictures of news articles and posters. The visual I chose is a YouTube video
created by Matthew trokan. Here he organizes it by showing a power point while voicing
over it explains each slide. In slide shows there are pictures he uses to show the types of

propaganda used in poster that both supported the war and those that did not. Both of
these genres use extra communication features to help enhance their topics. However,
the iconography relies on it a bit more. The video also has someone speaking in it while
the paper just contains text.
Audience and Purpose
The author of Reds, Labor, and the Great War: Antiwar Activism in the Pacific
Northwest intended his paper for the general public. The purpose of his paper is to
inform readers of the anti-war movements that took place and their effects in America
during the WWI. By informing the audience he creates awareness of the topic. In the
video Trokan address his audience as students. In the video he talks about his class and
what they had covered previously. The purpose is to inform his students by doing so the
students will retain the information and later will be able to apply it to assignments or
test. Both authors intend to inform either a general reader or students.
Rhetorical issues: Ethos, pathos, and Logos
Since both genres are full of information and facts from history most of their
credibility comes from references. Except for the film, the author is what gives the
credibility because he is teacher. The genres for the most part evoke the emotion of
discovery because the audience is learning and discovering a new side to WWI. The
most significant similarity is the use of facts and information from history, the
difference would be how they execute this information. I think in the video the audience
is a little more engaged because there is someone speaking rather than the audience
having to read.

Conclusion/Synthesis
I believe both genres achieved its purpose, by the way they planned out their way
to communicate the information. The typography was neatly organizing the paper,
giving the author the ability to express its main focus. Same with the iconography, the
voice over from the author added additional information to the audience and for this
reason I think it conveyed its message a little better than the typography.
