Introduction

This report depicts the current teaching practices of teachers over the globe, how a good teacher is
different from a great teacher and the changes required in the technique of teaching to make it better
for students.

Analysis:
Quality teaching in higher education matters for students learning outcomes. Institutions need to
ensure that the education they offer meets the expectations of students and the requirements of
employers, both today and for the future.

Teaching quality throughout the world

Teaching efficiency is influenced by contextual shifts within the higher education environment.
Current factors influencing the quality of teaching include:

the internationalisation of higher education

the increasingly broadening scope of education and greater diversity of student profiles
the rapid changes in technology, which can quickly make programme content and
pedagogies obsolete
the demand for greater civic engagement of graduates and regional development of higher
education
the increased pressures of global competition, economic efficiency
The need to produce a skilled workforce to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Ways of teaching worldwide:

China- China's education system continues to revolve around make-or-break examinations

that test students' ability to memorise texts, characters, dates and concepts, but make few
demands in terms of critical thinking or analysis.
Switzerland and England- pupils started primary school at six or seven, up to two years later
than in England, by which time progress was faster because of a "better foundation"
established in kindergarten - where there was "less emphasis on early mastery of academic
skills of reading, writing and arithmetic, more on lengthening attention span and memory, and
developing 'social skills' of learning together in a classroom setting". In Swiss primaries,
generally there is a greater emphasis on whole-class teaching in literacy, with every child
encouraged to make a contribution.
Singapore system concentrate on developing problem solving skills rather than mental
developing.
Western countries-The teaching methods used in western countries' colleges reflect many
new trends and features. And the most prominent feature is the growing awareness of selfregulated learning. The trend at teaching method and medium inspires us to explore new
teaching method

Good Teacher Vs Great Teacher

Good teachers care about students. They know the content and know how to explain it.
Good teachers expect and demand high levels of performance of students. Good teachers
are great performers and storytellers that rivet their students' attention.
All of this is good but great teachers engineer learning experiences that manoeuvre the
students into the driver's seat and then the teachers get out of the way.
Students learn best by personally experiencing learning that is physical, emotional,
intellectual and spiritual. John Dewey had it right in 1935 when he espoused his theories on
experiential learning. Today we call this constructivism.

A great teacher will devise a way to give the students an urgent reason to learn skills or
knowledge and then let them show they have learned it by what they can do. This is called
project-based learning.
A great teacher will keep the students wanting to come to school just to see what interesting
things they will explore and discover each day. This is called inquiry.

The philosophy that supports such a great teacher is simple. Students learn best when they are in
control of their learning. Students must do the heavy lifting of learning and nothing the teacher can
say or do will change that. Real learning requires doing, not listening, or observing only.

Survey on teaching:
In a study updated last year, John Hattie of the University of Melbourne crunched the results of more
than 65,000 research papers on the effects of hundreds of interventions on the learning of 250m
pupils.
He found that aspects of schools that parents care about a lot, such as class sizes, uniforms and
streaming by ability, make little or no difference to whether children learn (see chart). What matters is
"teacher expertise".
All of the 20 most powerful ways to improve school-time learning identified by the study depended on
what a teacher did in the classroom.

Performance based learning:

There are times when direct instruction is necessary, but only to be able to do something with that
knowledge or skill, but a great teacher devises learning experiences that force all the students to be
engaged much like being in the deep end of the swimming pool.
Then the lesson on arm and leg strokes becomes relevant. To learn, the students must do something.
We call this performance-based learning.

Great teachers do not teach

They stack the deck so that students have a reason to learn and in the process, can't help but learn
mainly by teaching themselves. This knowledge then becomes permanent and cherished rather than
illusory and irrelevant.
"Be a reflective teacher. Honestly look at what you do from time to time. Evaluate the purpose
of your role as a teacher."- Robert John Meehan

Good Teaching is Innate or Taught

Great teaching is an intangible gift, it requires a mixture of tenacity and instinct
Just like in any profession, there are certain personal characteristics and attitudes that make one a
good practitioner of that profession. However, there are definite knowledge, tools and practices that
need to be acquired to be a successful practitioner of that profession.
That means identifying the core set of skills, techniques and knowledge required by an entry-level
employee in that field.
To be a plumber, for example, one needs to know how to vent a sanitary drainage system.

In 2011 a survey of attitudes to education found that such portrayals reflect what people believe: 70%
of Americans thought the ability to teach was more the result of innate talent than training.
a new Phi Delta Kappa Gallup Poll released earlier this week suggests Americans do not believe that
hard work is what makes a great teacher great it's natural talent.
Seventy percent of those polled believe that the ability to teach or instruct students is more the result
of natural talent than of college training.
"Success or failure at almost anything is a combination of talent, training and effort. In some cases,
natural talent provides a huge advantage," wrote another, "but it has to be honed with EFFECTIVE
training and practice."

According to THE SUNDAY Gleaner, teaching is a natural gift which training can improve and
accreditation can validate, but training and accreditation cannot make one a teacher! Although this
statement has not been proven empirically, there is enough anecdotal evidence over thousands of
years of human existence to validate this. Lee Iacocca, former general manager of General Motors,
undeniably observed, "in a completely rational society, the best of us would aspire to be teachers and
the rest would have to settle for something less."

Unable to Analysis the data & form a meaningful or Useful information.
Less Awareness about the available opportunities in the market & various fields.
Less Career opportunities & slow Growth process, which ultimately leads to preventing them from
Accessing good & high paying jobs.
Lower achievements, means lesser contribution in the economy.

Changes to be done in techniques of Teaching

Active Learning

Students attention tends to get diverted frequently in long lecture sessions. Students attention can be
retained throughout the class by periodically giving them some activities to do, such as a group
activity or a role play. Active learning can address a variety of objectives such as

Recalling prior material

Responding to questions
Problem solving
Analytical, creative and critical thinking

Cooperative Learning
Cooperative Learning involves students working in teams or groups to accomplish an assigned task
and produce a final product. Eg: A Problem, Critical solution, Laboratory report, Product design etc..
This type of learning enables the following

Positive interdependence
Individual accountability
Face to face interaction
Team work and team building

Regular assessment of team and self

Assessment and Evaluation of Teaching quality

Students opinion and feedback of teaching has to be taken into consideration regularly, Educational
institutions should shift from the regular standardized test pattern to a test pattern that tests
knowledge and blends in a more natural way with the curriculum
One of the most effective learning assessment technique is the portfolio creation, these can be used
to track individuals performance, the devices that can be included in student portfolios are student
generated test questions, class room opinion polls, course related surveys, interest/knowledge/skills
checklist

Conclusion:
Teachers are not different, it is only their way of teaching which is different from each other and makes
them different in the mind of students.
Teacher plays very essential role in the field of education who teaches students very nicely to be a
person of good moral and behaviour, They make students academically superb and always
encourage to do better in the life. They help students to get sure about their goals of education
through clear vision and ideas. Without teachers in the life one cannot grow mentally, socially and
intellectually so it is utmost important that such professionals are honed with basic skills and are
provided with necessary training so that they are able to help shape the future of thousands of
peoples.
