Gateway to Glasstown
Millvilles past, present and future
depicted in new High Street mural.
{ BY JEFF SCHWACHTER }

Muralist Marcos Montiero grins during the official unveiling of the 90-footby-24-foot mural he painted over the course of the past few months on
High Street near Broad Street in Millville. See p. 24 for full mural image.

ts Thanksgiving Day and Mays Landing artist Marcos

Montiero is 25 feet in the air at the corner of Broad
and High streets in Millville.
Its a spot hes called home since early October, when
he began work on an enormous mural that he was commissioned to create for Millvilles Glasstown Arts District.
A sharp bitter wind slices through the afternoon, but
Montiero is used to it. At times, during the painting
process, its so cold that he cant feel his hands to grip the
brushes. Intent, however, on finishing the 90-foot-wide by
24-foot-high mural before winter arrives and the weather
becomes more difficult to work in, hes been up on a scissor lift for the better part of seven weeks, sometimes for 12
hours a pop, applying his talent to a formerly barren wall
at the northern gateway to Millvilles downtown.
Its the biggest mural Millville has ever has seen within
its borders and the largest exterior piece Montiero has
ever produced.
Originally from Brazil, Montiero is marine-life artist,
with a massive portfolio. After submitting his ideas for the
mural, he went through a series of focus groups and other
meetings this past summer before he was selected among
several artists to create the new mural.
The building, owned by New Jersey Community
Capital, was formerly a VFW hall and currently houses a
day-care center.
The building owner has been great, says Montiero.
He renovated the wall of the building, fixing cracks and
stuff so we had a better surface to work on.
Funded by the Holly City Development Corporation
(HCDC), the New Jersey Department of Community
Affairs, the Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit
Program and South Jersey Gas, the $40,000 mural project,
dubbed MillvillePast, Present & Future, adds a big
splash of much-needed color to downtown Millville.
Some of the other projects that HCDC has been a part
of include the Cumberland County College Arts and

Deterra product was available for community members to dispose of their unused
medications and they also received Deterra
pouches to take home. An Inspira pharmacist was available for community members
to discuss their current medications and
review possible duplications, interactions,
dosing and more. Local elected officials,
representatives from the Southwest
Council, prosecutors, law enforcement,
physicians and other community leaders
were present at the event.
Kicking off the press conference was
Elizabeth Sheridan, Chief Operating
Officer of Inspira Medical Center, who
explained that Inspira bought 50,000
pouches of Deterra at a cost of $174,000.
Since each pouch can safely destroy up to
90 pills, the potential community impact is
up to 4.5 million pills taken off the streets.

Matt Rudd, Director of Coalitions &

Communications for the Southwest
Council, introduced the Deterra product to
the tri-county Health & Wellness Alliance
in February. I never thought wed see it
introduced this fast, he said.
Cumberland County Prosecutor
Jennifer Webb-McRae mentioned that, a
little more than a year ago, Inspira helped
local law enforcement battle the opioid epidemic by purchasing Narcan, an opioid
antidote that can be used to reverse overdoses to heroin and prescription pain pills
like morphine, codeine, oxycodone,
methadone and Vicodin.
Today they have given us another tool
in our toolbox, said Webb-McRae. Now
there will be one less opportunity for a
young child to experiment with a drug

found in grandmas medicine cabinet or to

bring it to school and sell it to another child.
Now these drugs can be properly disposed
of without getting into our water stream or
thrown in the trash, where they could still
get into the wrong hands, she added.
Sheridan explained that the pouches of
Deterra will be made available to the general public, in addition to the 48 organizations
that make up the Cumberland, Salem and
Gloucester Health and Wellness Alliance.
Included among those 48 agencies are
local police and health departments.
The public was encouraged throughout
the event to check their medicine cabinets
for expired or unneeded medications, especially pain medicines. If you find any such
prescription bottles, do not simply flush
them down the toilet, which is how medicines can seep into the water supply. Nor
should you simply throw them in the trash.
Instead, bring them to your local police station or health department, where the drugs
can be destroyed by using a Deterra pouch
supplied by Inspira Health Network.
According to the Southwest Councils
Rudd, Our explicit message to our community goes like this: Avoid prescription
drug misuse by 1.) Account take inventory of your prescriptions; 2.) Secure most
abusers start from a family or friends cabinet; and 3.) Dispose of unwanted medicine, either at a local PD drop box or use a
proper disposal method like Deterra, he
advises.
Rudd also encourages parents to educate their kids about the dangers of opioid
drug addiction by telling them to take
their medicine(s) exactly as prescribed
and to be aware of the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
A few days before Fridays event, participants in a Senior Health Education
Class at Inspira were told they could bring
their leftover prescriptions to the event to
be properly destroyed. Several did just
that, including Carmela Barrett, who
brought a half dozen of her old prescription bottles (see photo on front cover).
The speaker at our November meeting
told us about this program and about the
elimination of prescription drugs, she
began. They warned of situations like visitors to your home asking to use the restroom and then opening your medicine
cabinet and having access to your prescriptions. Barrett was happy to take
advantage of the opportunity to bring her
old meds to Inspira to have them
destroyed so there was no chance they
could end up on the street. I

New County and State Service Complex Opens

State, county and
local officials as well
as business and
community leaders
recently joined
Cumberland County
Improvement
Authority representatives to celebrate the
opening of a new
State and County
Services Campus
located at 275
Delsea Drive in
Vineland. A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the launch of a building project
model for the CCIA and their role in local economic development.
The project was financed and developed by the Improvement Authority, which
owns the recently celebrated facility and a second building on the property. This initiative involves a partnership primarily with the New Jersey State Treasury and
Motor Vehicle Commission that has resulted in a $14.4 million restoration incentive.
The CCIA also administers shared services to the county and local municipalities to create pooled resources for items such as fleet maintenance, trash and
recycling services, property management, marketing and economic development.
The programs collectively result in nearly $1.5 million in annual savings and allocated funds, along with a direct contribution to Cumberland County.
The two buildings set on the State and County Services Campus in Vineland
cover 116,000 square feet. The project was intended to streamline delivery of federal and state social services. Renovations at the 275 North Delsea Drive location
include the States Department of Agriculture, WorkFirst NJ, and the department of
Children and Families along other county bureaus. The entire project is slated for
completion this year.
New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles officials report that the building arrangement with the Improvement Authority has enabled them to have a new and conveniently located office space for their staff and for the many residents who use their
services.

Employees of Oldcastle Precast Pipe

local families that are located in SafeHaven houses.
Their goal is to make living in this situation a little more bearable.
Domestic violence is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community,
regardless of age, economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or
nationality. It is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behaviour that is only a fraction of a systematic pattern of dominance and control.
Domestic violence can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and in severe
cases, even death.

December 10 event at Cumberland Mall supports local service initiatives,

he Vineland Police Departments

Community Policing Unit is
partnering with SNJ Today to
provide books for local children
on their birthdays, while honoring the late
Cara McCollum.
Cara started The Birthday Book Project
in 2008 to provide children from Title 1
schools with new, age-appropriate books on
their birthdays. Her goal was to help combat
illiteracy among children born in poverty.
Cara moved to New Jersey from her
home state of Arkansas to attend Princeton
University in 2010. She became Miss New
Jersey 2013 with the platform Giving the
Gift of Reading. Cara joined the Millvillebased SNJ Today news team in the summer
of 2015 as the lead anchor for the nightly
newscast.
Cara wanted to get The Birthday Book
Project started in South Jersey, but in
February, at the age of 24, she passed away
after a tragic car accident.
In Caras memory, the SNJ Today
teamwith the help of Caras parents, Rick
and Maureenstarted The Cara McCollum
Book Project of Southern New Jersey as a
501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
The Project collects donations of wrapping paper, money and books for children
up to the fifth grade. Members of SNJ
Today have teamed up with Miss New
Jersey contestants to wrap the books.
Every month, they bring the wrapped
books to area schools, where teachers keep
them until each childs birthday. The
Project brought books to Gloria M. Sabater
Elementary School in Vineland last week.
On December 10, The Vineland Police
Department will be collecting books for
The Birthday Book Project at their Coffee
with a Cop event in Boscovs of the
Cumberland Mall.
Coffee with a Cop is a national program
that the Vineland Police Department participates in as a way to connect with the community. According to coffeewithacop.com,

the program was launched

in 2011 in Hawthorne,
California, because members of the Hawthorne
Police Department were
looking for ways to interact
more successfully with the
citizens they served.
Vineland Police
Department held its first
Coffee with a Cop in July
2012. At locations all over
Vineland, police officers
chat with citizens over cups of coffee every
month or two. In October, the Friends and
Family Diner on Landis Avenue hosted a
Coffee with a Cop event. Local businesses
offer to provide their venues for coffee chats.
According to the December 10 event
flyer, there are no agendas or speeches,
just friendly conversation, and Coffee with
a Cop is a chance to ask questions and/or
voice concerns.
Lieutenant Lene Bowers of the
Community Policing Unit is very excited
about collaborating with The Birthday
Book Project, after learning about it from
an advertisement.
Its great for us to partner with SNJ
Today, she said.
Not only will police officers be collecting books, but they will also help wrap
them and deliver them to schools.
[This is] much more than just collecting books, Lt. Bowers said of delivering
the books to schools, and meeting the children who will receive them.
While Coffee with a Cop events are held
all over Vineland, the annual Boscovs
event has been a December tradition for
the police department since they started
participating in the program.
The police officers partner with charities for every Coffee with a Cop. Last year
at Boscovs, they accepted toys for Vineland
Police Athletic League to distribute during
its Christmas Party.
The Saturday, December 10, Coffee with
a Cop at Boscovs will run from 9 a.m. to 12
noon. Free coffee will be provided by
Xpresso Caf. Miss New Jersey Brenna
Weick may be in attendance.
The officers will be accepting donations
of new, unwrapped books for children age
five to 11. They will also be accepting
expired or unused medications for disposal,
as long as they are not syringes or liquids.
The Birthday Book Project also accepts
monetary donations on its GoFundMe at
gofundme.com/birthdaybook. I

Local United Way appeals to community:
We need your ideas, we need volunteers and
board members, we need donors, and your prayers
wouldnt hurt, either. { BY MIKE EPIFANIO }

hen the news broke this summer

that General Mills will close its
Progresso Soup plant in Vineland
by early 2018, many in the community
were devastated. The obvious source of
emotional pain stems from the lost jobs;
something New Jerseys poorest county
can do without.
What many dont realize is that the
generosity of Progresso workers contributed some $180,000 per year to the
United Way through payroll contributions.
Thats money that funded dozens of chari-

many others, not to mention the numerous United Way programs such as the NJ
2-1-1 program and the Volunteer Income
Tax Assistance program.
The NJ 2-1-1 can help you find solutions to personal needs by informing you
of resources in your community such as
day-care facilities, shelters, affordable
housing units, social services, employment
training programs, senior services, medical insurance, and more (see nj211.org).
The United Way offers no-cost income
tax preparation for qualifying low-income

Merighi addresses the crowd:

We need volunteers, donors.

table organizations each year, along with

much needed programs that benefit the
neediest among us.
As the Campaign Chairman for the
local United Way, Thomas Merighi, Jr.
knows the effect of the Progresso Plant
closure will be immense and that something needs to be done about it now. He
just wasnt sure how to address it. So he
did what hes done so many times in the
past; He opened up his restaurant,
Merighis Savoy Inn, and invited supporters of the United Way to brainstorm.
We already had our challenges here in
Cumberland County, said Merighi. Now
the source of 80 percent of our funding
those hourly Progresso plant employeesis
going away. Were in trouble. Number one,
we are going to have to help the employees who are losing their jobs. Number two,
we need to find people to donate to
replace the $180,000 were no longer
going to recieve from them.
Merighi noted that there are dozens of
local charities that benefit from United
Way funding, including the YMCA, Boys
and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity and

individuals and families through the

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.
Those who attended last weeks United
Way event at Merighis Savoy Inn saw a
video highlighting some of the programs
funded by the United Way. They also heard
from United Way board members and
staffers, who echoed Merighis sentiments
about how vital the agency is to a community that ranks last on many lists among New
Jerseys poorest and unhealthiest counties.
United Way Regional Executive
Director John Emge called the United
Way a safety net for the community and
reminded the crowd that the agency was
there after Hurricane Sandy and recent
casino layoffs to help people in times of
widespread need.
Merighi wrapped up his presentation
with one last appeal: We need your ideas;
we need volunteers and board members;
we need donors; and your prayers
wouldnt hurt, either.
To find out how you can help through
volunteering or donating, visit the United
Way online at UnitedWay.org or call 856896-2307. I

n the aftermath of the filming of the

television movie The Migrants in
Cumberland County in 1973, its cast
departed this area to continue their
careers, adding this TV film to their
resumes and looking for the next project.
Many carved out a successful acting career,
but Ron Howard made the decision to take
his place behind the camera, and his choice
has led to four decades in which he has been
recognized as a distinguished director of
some critically acclaimed films. By The
Migrants shoot, he had already acknowledged where his future might be heading.
While he was in New Jersey, Ron
Howard shared with the Millville Dailys
John Ewing his plans on attending the
University of Southern California at the
completion of the shoot and his desire to
become a film director. Today, his accomplishments include acclaimed movies like
Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind and the recent
Beatles documentary Eight Days A Week,
but Beverly Grays biography of the
actor/director, Ron Howard: From
Mayberry to the Moonand Beyond, traces
Howards style behind the camera to his
experiences working in the Vineland area
with Tom Gries.
While filming The Migrants, Gray
writes, Howard was deeply impressed by
the performances that director Tom Gries
elicited from his actors. Not until his own
directing career was underway did he
recall that in the early rehearsal period
Gries had offered his cast little guidance.
Instead, Gries preferred to watch what the
actors themselves brought to their roles,
then shaped his scenes accordingly.
Though Howards own first instinct as a
director was to treat his actors like puppets, imposing his interpretations on them
from the start, the example of Gries helped
persuade him to back off.
Like Howard, most of the stars of The
Migrants have chosen not to revisit this
television project in interviews or written
recollections after striking it big in motion
pictures. There are two exceptions, however. Cloris Leachman, in her memoir
Cloris, recalls the making of the movie.
The feelings I had during filming didnt
leave me when the day was over; the
awful burden of having to save my children was real to me every minute, she
writes. Still today Im left with emotions

I cant handle from playing that role.

David Clennon, writing online in 2010,
has been a bit more revealing about the
fate of the movie in which he played Sissy
Spaceks husband. After the movie's original broadcast in 1974, he reports, it was
never re-run nationally, in spite of its highprofile cast and its widely recognized quality. Why would CBS refuse to earn more
money on its original investment by
rebroadcasting its own movie? In 1974 the
U.S. was fighting the Cold War with the
Soviet Union (USSR). The image of
America was a key weapon in that bitter
struggle. The U.S. had to make itself look
good in the eyes of the world. Unsightly
images, and unflattering stories, like those
of the lives of migrant farmworkers, were
believed to be harmful to America's war
against the USSR.
Clennons evaluation of how the era
that produced The Migrants ultimately
decided its fate is best illustrated by something the films director recounted at the
time. According to director Tom Gries,
Clennon explains, the president of CBS
Entertainment (1974) declared that The
Migrants was an Un-American movie.
That is why a landmark movie in the history of American television remains virtually
unknown today.
Despite the controversy it sparked, The
Migrants earned six Emmy nominations
that year, including best actress
(Leachman), best director and best
screenplay. In an interview with Out
Smart magazine, screenwriter Lanford
Wilson explained why The Migrants
didnt win any Emmys. That was the year
that [The Autobiography of ] Miss Jane
Pitman won everything, so we didnt have
a chance, he said.
In the early years of video cassettes,
Monterey Video released The Migrants on
VHS but, unfortunately, it has been out of
print for years and there is no sign of a
DVD release. Clennon, in his online comments, is grateful the film was made available to consumers. This is an extraordinary movie-for-television, he writes.
Monterey Home Video and the
Monterey Movie Company have performed a valuable service in producing and
distributing the high-quality video cassettes of this television treasure. See it
before it disappears again. I

ecember was customarily a

slower month for Main Street
Vineland. Following the hubbub of the Holiday Parade, it
was a time to lay back a little, take in the
joy of the season, and plan for the next
year.
This year, however, the fun continues
through December. Yes, were enjoying
the season and planning some great events
and programs for next year, but we want
the fun to continue so you can enjoy the
good times along with us.
As I said in the last column, we have
two events this month celebrating the
beauty of holiday trees and how they contribute to this season. We have 10 holiday
trees placed in downtown storefronts
installed and decorated by over 100 students of the Vineland Public Schools.
They certainly add a lot of holiday spirit
to our downtownThe Aveand get
everyone in the right mood. I must thank
Shonda Johnston, a member of our Design
Team and Vineland Public School teacher.
Shonda, with her husband Reginald, a
member of our Board of Directors, has
contributed so much to Main Street
Vineland. She has worked hard to coordinate this and maintain a Main Street
Vineland holiday tradition.
We want you to vote for the best holiday tree. Weve made it easy for you by
putting a link on the Main Street Vineland
websiteTheAve.bizor you can vote by
paper ballot in selected downtown
Vineland stores. Either way, youll see
photos of each of the trees and you can
choose your favorite. Just make sure to get
your vote in by midnight on Sunday,
December 11.
The winning tree will be announced at
another special holiday tree-related event.
Over 100 years ago, the first Community
Christmas tree was raisedin New York
Citys Madison Square. This set the tradition for communities throughout the
country to set up trees this time of year to
unite people of different faiths, creeds,
and ethnicities. So, this year, we have
joined those communities in setting up
what is called a CommUNITY Tree. On

When it comes to books, its not a

one-size-fits-all gift, so choose wisely.

Karen Kingsburys Brush of Wings? My

brother, who enjoys action adventure and
crime novels, is back on a Stephen King
kick, ranking Doctor Sleep as one of his
favorites. He also digs Kings Bazaar of Bad
Dreams. Maybe Grishams The Whistler?
My sister loved the writing in the poignant
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony
Doerr, but returns to British humorist P.G.
Wodehouse for escape.
Lighter literary authors, like Alexander
McCall Smith, are good picks. My high
school senior loved A Separate Peace by
John Knowles. My daughter enjoys Wendy
Maas books. The Rick Riordan books and
classics like C.S. Lewiss Chronicles of
Narnia and Tolkiens The Lord of the Rings
Trilogy are my middle sons favorites. My
youngest boys delight in Mo Willems picture books and Magic Tree House chapter
books. Of course, there are also great gift
books for hobbyistscookbooks, art books,
and how-to books. There are also bookrelated items, like book lights, bookmarks,
and book plates for stocking stuffers.
If you have the opportunity to wrap up
time, give that. Give an armchair adventure,
a trip through time, a walk in someone
elses shoes through a struggle. Give the gift
of experiencing a character develop and the
hope to do the same. Give the gift of empathy. Give beauty and meaning, or an understanding of history as both a warning and a
challenge. If you could give the gift of quiet
from the electronics, the hype, the ads, the
demands, the bleeps of text and twitter with
an escape into a storywell, then you have
really given something of value. I

y parents gave me the gift of

reading. My dad was a traveling salesman when I was
young, gone days at a time.
But when he was home, he would gather us
up and read. His standby was the Wizard of
Oz series, which his uncle had given to
him. Now on my shelves is The Lost
Princess of Oz by L. Frank Baum, a wellworn hardcoverpublished in 1917, full of
magical and scary adventures.
And it encourages imagination. So I
believe that dreamsdaydreams, you know,
with your eyes wide open and your brainmachinery whizzingare likely to lead to
the betterment of the world. The imaginative child will become the imaginative man
or woman most apt to create, to invent and
therefore to foster civilization. As Dad and
I entered the Land of Oz, sharing the story
of Woozy and the Patchwork Girl, time
slowed. We had been swept into a portal.
This was the gift.
My mom was an infectious reading
enthusiast. Once a week, wed head to the
library where the childrens librarian
would help me pick out books, some just
wrapped in the book jacket cover. Every
afternoon, my mom would take a reading
break; lying down on the couch, out
would come her latest novel. Likewise, we
were to quietly read. Billed as a half hour,
it was often extended for another chapter.
Mom wasnt reading to be educated or
informed; she read for the sheer pleasure
of the escape.
When it came time to go through
Moms things, a decade after she died of
cancer, it was her books that brought
tears, those wed discussed over the
phone, bridging our distance by shared
characters and stories. I had inscribed
some of them, like Girl with a Pearl
Earring by Tracy Chevalier; it was a present carefully chosen.
That is the key to giving books, to curate
based on the recipient. Its not a one-sizefits-all gift. Some on my gift list are easy, as
we share tastes. I pick one of my favorite
books of the year, like The Storied Life of
A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin, about a curmudgeonly bookseller. For others, its a
good rule to look for similar books to what
theyve enjoyed. My dad loves the west, so
maybe The Oregon Trail by Rinker Buck or
This House of Sky, a memoir by Ivan Doig.
My niece likes Christian fiction, so maybe

Innovation Center building that is currently being constructed down the street from
the mural.
We are currently working on the
development of the Glasstown Creative
Enterprise Center, which will be a mixeduse site that serves as a small business
incubator, says Heather Santoro, of the
HCDC. We also served as the lead agency
in coordinating the Center City Playstreets
initiative, which provided free activity for
youth and families this past summer, just
to name a few.
It was during those Playstreets events
that local children were encouraged to
offer their ideas and input for the mural,
according to Marianne Lods, executive
director of the District.
There is a large contingent of people
and organizations that have been working
together over the course of the last few
years, all with a common goal of revitalizing the Center City neighborhood, adds
Santoro. This is just one example [of several] which shows the kind of impact that
can be made when organizations and the
community at large work together. We
have found that programs and projects are
more successful and have more impact
when they are a collaborative effort.
At a chilly December 1 dedication ceremony, several city officials, local dignitaries, artists and others from the local arts
sphere joined Montiero to officially
announce the completion of the mural.
That group included Pat Witt, the matriarch, teacher and founder of Millvilles
arts district. She is depicted in the mural,
which will serve in part as a new gateway
to the Glasstown Arts District, says Lods.
Its the gateway to downtown Millville
that reflects its past, present and future,
says Lods at the ceremony, and thats
pretty much what community is all about.
The mural depicts such images related
to Millvilles past as glassblowers, a child
working at a potters wheel, the Millville
Airport, plus present-day scenes such as
the Levoy Theatre, as well as the Millville

Rose and children, whom Lods refers to as

the citys future.
From listening to all of the youth and
the adults who participated in our focus
groups in July, Marcos captured the
essence of Millvillenot forgetting our
past, the roots of the community [such as]
the glass industry, the river, what the
wildlife means [to Millville], and of course,
our wonderful arts community with Pat
Witts portrait featured as a part of it, says
Lods. But its the diverse youth that are
picturedthats our future, and its in their
hands. So, lets hope they become good
custodians of the future.
With the new mural situated blocks
away from the Glasstown Arts Districts
main cluster of activitywhere venues
such as the Levoy and the Riverfront
Renaissance Center for the Arts sustain
the cultural vibrancy envisioned with the
initial creation of the districtLods says it
will not only help to bridge the edges of
the strip, but also to create a new gateway
to the downtown district.
There are some very good businesses
on this block, says Lods. The La Botega
Gallery, and the Village on High, which is
very prosperous with eateries as well, but
its the entrance. From Route 55, most people take the 27 Exit and come this way and
its great for them [to now] see something
beautiful.
Lods says plans are being finalized to
finish the empty dirt lot in front of the
mural to make it a new and attractive public space on High Street.
We envision a mixmaybe a garden
with some concrete or pavers around it
and putting up a sign that says, Welcome
to the Glasstown Arts District on the corner. And I think that will spur some more
development here.
The project would be another joint
effort with the buildings owner, and any
public or grant money that can be obtained
by the Arts District.
Now completed, with its assorted
(mainly) acrylic hues breaking through
from the original graphite stick outlines,
the mural has come to life, and while
Montiero is relieved, he says the dedication ceremony was somewhat bittersweet
for him.

he says. Sometimes until after the sun
went down.
Although Montieros initial concept was
modified to accommodate some of the suggestions from the focus groups, which
included artists, as well as local school
children, he says the final mural is not too
far off from his original vision.
Only a few elements have changed, he
says. But the core of the layout is really
here and I got to the end of it in the way I
wanted. Its colorful and the people I

for a long time so people can enjoy this for
many years to come.
People really love this city, he adds.
Theyre proud to be born here, to live
here, and they are very proud to have
something like this. I have not experienced
that before and that was a great thing.
That made me feel very good about my
work and about myself.
It all came together.

mony is his girlfriend, Elizabeth Birch.
She was by me all this time helping me
outeven helping to paint the Millville
Rose [in the center of the mural], says
Montiero.
Birch was born in Millville.
My great-great grandparents descended here as glassblowers so I have such a
deep connection to [Millville] and to have
this mural now is surreal, she says. My
grandparents met at the [Levoy] Theatre, I
was born in the hospital, I was baptized
there at St. Marys and here I was supporting my boyfriend on this mural.
Along with cleaning up the lot at Broad
and High, Lods says other projects are in
the works for the downtown district,
including two more murals.
In the spring we planwith the Holly
City Development Corporation, because
they budgeted more just for mural arts
two more smaller murals in the downtown
area. I

And she likes it, so that makes me
happy, says Montiero, who was glad Witt
could attend the dedication ceremony.
The cool thing is, its facing north so
with the sun the mural is going to be so
bright.
The largest mural Montiero had done
before this was 15 by 35 feet, an interior
mural at the Hamilton Mall in Mays
Landing.
I usually paint in oils, but when I paint
on walls, I use acrylic latex, he says. But
the most important thing Montiero
learned from the experience was how
much pride Millvilles residents have for
their city.
While I was working, what surprised
me was the huge amount of people who
stopped by to thank me and to tell me how
proud they were to have this mural here
that represents their city, he says. It was
rewarding for me to have so many differ-

New Book Traces Skee-Ball

Roots to Vineland
When California residents Thaddeus Cooper and
Kevin Kreitman decided to
investigate the story of SkeeBall, they were surprised to
discover that its roots would
lead them across the country
to the heart of South Jersey.
The result of all of their
research is told in a new ebook titled Seeking
Redemption: The Real Story of the
Beautiful Game of Skee-Ball.
Utilizing the archives of the
Vineland Historical and Antiquarian
Society, Cooper and Kreitman have
crafted a timeless story of a start-up,
beginning with the unlikely inventor,
Joseph Fourestier Simpson, a Vineland
man who wanted to leave his mark on
the world. The book features all of the
classic struggles and triumphs but is
also a story of how this beloved game
survived two world wars, recessions
and depressions, industry transformations, technology revolutions and legal
wrangling to thrive for over 100 years.
Skee-Ball morphed from its origins
as A Mans Game to becoming a fascinating pastime for everyone. It survived patent wars, clone competition,
and the threats of bankruptcy and
obscurity to emerge once again as a
best-selling iPhone app, and be resurrected for modern amusement venues
by Bay Tek Games, Inc., redesigned in
2016.

This book is a treasure

for history buffs because it
includes documentation
from primary sources,
and is lavishly illustrated
with original photographs, letters, papers
and documents. More
than the story of the
game, it is a unique view
into the universal
human struggles for
redemption and recognition, and a salute to the eternal
inventiveness of the human spirit.
The book is available for download
with iBooks on a Mac or iOS device.
Multi-touch books can be read with
iBooks on a Mac or iOS device. Books
with interactive features may work best
on an iOS device. iBooks on a Mac
requires OS X 10.9 or later. The authors
expect the paperback version to be
available soon through amazon.com.
For more details, contact them at seekingredemption@nomoreboxes.com.

ComTec Cloud Services

Assisting Schools and
Nonprofits with E-RATE
ComTec Cloud Services is once
again working with schools and nonprofits who work with kids to modernize their networks and technology via
the E-RATE program. E-RATE is a federally-sponsored initiative originally
created in 1997 designed to provide
federal funding assistance to such
organizations.

ComTec can cut through the clutter

and provide schools and nonprofits
with a single point of contact and a
single invoice for all those needs while
giving options of having federal funding automatically deducted from a
ComTec invoice. ComTec is positioned
to help with all category one and two
needs. ComTec has dedicated engineers and installers to support all
clients needs and take the headache
out of installing and implementing
new technology.
ComTec invites nonprofits and
schools to reach out to discuss wish list
items for the coming year or even to
help flesh out technology roadmaps for
the next decade. In the 28 years
ComTec has served the Delaware Valley
and beyond.
To connect with a ComTec E-RATE
consultant, e-mail solutions@comtecusa.net. In your message, include

We are always looking for great venues to host

Meet & Greet or Cash Mob events! Our monthly Meet
& Greet events are centered around networking. You
need to have space to accommodate approximately
50 people. They are held on various days of the week
from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The host provides some light
refreshments. The GVCC promotes the event to members and handles registration. It's a great way to promote your business to other members!
Cash Mobs are conducted to support our local

members. We jointly choose a date and time for

people to come to your business and spend a few
dollars. The GVCC promotes the event to the public, at arrival time we take a group photo and issue
press items post event. Theres no cost to you for
hosting and it's another great way to make people
more aware of your business and to spend some
money there!

event, call 856-691-7400 or email info@vinelandchamber.org.
